H H MZ 'T : 1"""; ;r: V J I 1 I I 1 1 1 a .1 II i I i II I III .!' 1 IT 1 MISCELLANY; Pleasures op a citt home while . ? t family are in the countrf. -TBS ' The following not altogether unprece dented, though amusing experience, we find recorded in the Courier des Etats Unis of Saturday morning : : ' - Mr, X. (no one is comprised by this initial) occupies a house in the vicinity of Astor Place, furnished with ievery thing that can contribute to comfort and good living. According to his custom, he C3bk up his residence, in the month of Juue last, in a cottage on the North Rivera within . reach . of his .business, which called him to the city almost ev eryday.: The family and servants be ing once settled in the country, the man sion in the city remained dosed-, " Madame who had no occasion to come to New York, often advised her husband to go and visit the neighbor hood of Astor Place ) we will , suppose that this is Layfayette Place,) and see if everything - there was in order. - Mr. X promised never to fail; bnt the rail road conveyed him clear to Chambers street, only two steps from his office.- His business kept him ' there the most of his time. To go up town on purpose to inspect a deserted house, seemed to him nothing hut lost time. He dispen sed, therefore, with following the advice of his wife, always promising himself at heart, however, to conform to it anoth er time. ; At evening when he returned to Yon kers (we will suppose this to be Yon kers) if Madame X. asked of him the news from -the city mansion, in order to avoid reproach, he would affirm that he had visited it; that he had examined, wh the greatest care, to see if every thing was in order- "all right," he had found nothing disturbed. Upon this, Madame X. blessed the police of New York, and glorified its uniform, which inspires such a salutary terror, in the j thieves Thus passed the summer. - A few days ago, the family came back to live in the city, and resumed possession of the mansion in ; Lafayette place. Everything there; was jui order, as M. X-had said. -However, on his return, towards the hour of dinner, M. X. whs received with a bitter smile, and a look j of severity. : 1 ';.. "My dear," said his wife, "you have deceived me." ; " said the husband,, "and how, if you please?" And as she hesitated answering, "Ah! I know," continued he, laughing. "Somebody has said to you tnat 1 nave not visited the house a sing le time during the. summer. Well, ve ry good I;--.If that were the case, would there be any occasion for taking the matter so much to heart, and showing oneselt so much onended J" "No one ever said to me anything of the kind,"- resumed Madame X. with emotion. "But if any one had said it, 1 should have conclusive reasons for not believing iL,w ; "How! 'You have reasons for be lieving that 1 have not visited the house, perhaps'?'' . : , 'Alas ! I have only too ; many of them.-' For example ! see there, what is too convincing !" Without deigning to push the discus sion further, Madame X. took her hus band. by the hand, and led him into a room attached to the uining-hall, and which had remained shut all the mor ning. Look there," said she. , M- X. looked stupified. The entire floor and shelves were covered wiih empty " bot tles, and porcelain, all in disorder ; sev eral broken pieces were heaped up in a corner. .. ' ' ; . r "Who in .the ' deuce has done this pretty piece of business V exclaimed M. "My dear," said Madame X, with a voice of entreaty, "do not add dissimula tion to the wrongs you , have done ! We are rich enough . to enable you to drink, without inconvenience, with your friends, in two or three months, an en tire stock . of champagne, - Rine wine, Bordeaux or Madeira. I will . not re proach you with having exhausted all the boxes of . Chateau Margaux, i for which you know my preference. But yon ought, at least, to have paid more regularly your, -exorbitant bills at the butcher's, the baker's and especially the grocer's, i v :: V s. , 4 At these remarks M. X., overcome with surprise, found nothing to answer not knowing where to commence in order to - establish his innocence. He took the , bills which his wife handed him, posted them up ; then, bursting out all at once 1 ,v '.',;.,. "As true as heaven," said he, "I don't understand a single word of all that you have beeu dealing out to me." : Then commenced a tedious and inter minable explanation, from whice it re suited as follows : . Some impudent rascals, or some ro guish wags, well acquainted, - at it ap pears, with the customs of M.X, had introduced themselves into the house by means of false keys, immediately after bis departure for the country. They bad settled themselves there, and, with in credible audacity, they had aviled them selves of the services of those who had furnished the household of the absent proprietor, finding nothing too good for them having no regard, as one may ea sily believe, to the expense, and not a bandoning the place ; until the- amount of their bills lead them to fear a discov ery of their, impuiaat roguery. -. ... During their stay, however, they had emotied the cellar. Oneoftne causes of their departure had been, perhaps, the total exhaustion of the supplies of fine wines which M. X. had carefully collected' among which, besides the celebrated Chateau-Margaux, there were demijohns of Madeira, which had made the tour of the globe, all for the benefit of these ; gentleman.. By a freak not less extraordinary than the act itself the thieves respected even ine mosi uisigni ficant objects of furnitnre, and nothing was found " wanting in the examination which they hastened to make. . By way of recognising this delicate procedure, M. X. paid the bills, and very wisely made no complaint before a court of justice. . f ' ' : FromtktN. York Herald. ; THEi CONFESS IT. ' The devotion of the slaves of 'Norfolk and Portbmouth to their masters and mis tresses, through all the severe trials of the late terrible pestilence in those cities, ex cites the admiration of our Seward organs. His central organ at Albany confesses it all, and argues that where there is such de votion among the slaves they may be safe ly trusted with their liberty and equal rights. But, alas I there is Jamaica, and there is Hayti I Which would our Seward philanthropists have Virginia to be ? another Hayti, or a second Jamaica And will Mrs. Harnet Beecher Stowe be good enough to inform the Duchess of Suther land of the attachment of those slaves ' of Norfolk and Portsmouth to their masters and mistresses, as illustrated in hundreds of cases of this dreadful visitation of the yellow fever there t Where the relations of protection and dependence are thus beau tifully developed, there must be something divine in the institution of Southern slave ry, after all. . It passes all human philos ophy..;,"- . . - ; THE EDITOR AND THE PREMIER. Black, the editor of the Morning Chron icle, was a great favorite with Lord Mel bourne. On ope occasion the .Peer said: 'Mr. Black,' you are the only person who comes to see me who forgets who I am.' Phe editor opened his eyes with astonish ment. . x ou forget that I am the Prune Minister: every body else takes especial care to remember it, but I wish they would forget it, for they only remember it to ask me for places and favors. Now, Mr. Black, .-ou never ask me . for any thing-, and I wish you would, for seriously I should be moat happy to do any thing m my power to serve you.' 'I am truly obliged,' said Mr. Black, 'but I don't want any thing. I am editor of the Morning Chronicle; 1 like my business, and I live happily on my in come.' 'Then, said the Peer, with an oath, 'I envy you, and you're the only man I ever did. - ' Adveesitv exasperates fools,, dejects cowards, draws out the faculties of the wise and ingenious, puts the modest to the necessity of trying their skilL awes the opulent, and makes the idle industrious. Much may be said in - favor of adversity; but the worst of it is it has no friends. 1 THE NORTH CAROLINA MUTUAL LIFE LNSURINCECOMP'Y, RALEIGH, N. C.
