HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.
The Richmond NrJional Ameriran of Sat

the distressing accident that occurred on
the Central Road on the 21st inst., which
resulted in the death of an old gentleman
named I'titman.
I he unfortunate occurrence took place
five rnile3 this.sicle of Staunton. The mail
train was returning to Richmond, the cars
running at their usual speed, and in, com
ing to a sharp curve on the road, the decea
sed was first observed sitting on Jhe track.
I he engineer saw him only when about
4 or o yards distant, and reversed the en
gine in order if possible to avoid the catas
trophe. I he deceased being deaf did not
hear its approach, and was caught by the
cow-catcner and draped some distance.
His skull was fractured by the concussion,
and he was found to be entirely dead when

bably eighty years of age. No blame can
De auacned to tne engineer lor this unto

the best regulated railroads, as they some-
times uo also in lamilies.
THE DEPOSITION
OF
BISHOP DOANE'S
SOS.
It was stated that Bishop Doane, of New
Jersey, had deposed his own son from the E-
piscopal ministry for joining the Roman
Catholic Church. The following is the
sentence of the bishop:
"To all, everywhere, who are in commu
nion with the one Holy Catholic and Apos
tolic Church: tie it known that George
Hobart Doane, M. D., Deacon of the Dio
cese, having declared to me in writting his
renunciation of the ministry, which he re
ceived at my hands from the Lord Jesus
Christ, and his design not to officiate in fu
ture m any of the offices thereof, intending
to submit, himself to the schismatical Ro
man intrusion, is deposed trom the minis
try; and I hereby pronounce and declare
him to be deposed,' in : the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost." ' .
The deposition is given at the Episcopal
residencej Riverside, on the 15th of Septem
' ber,- in the presence of Milo Mahan, D. U.,
and Marcus F. Hyde, A. M., Presbyters of
ine i-rotestant Episcopal Uhurcb. The
liisbop adds.
"1 his sentence was not executed until
Jbe provision of the canon, "where the par-
-a a -
ly nas acted unadvisably and hastily,
which is pre-eminently the present case.
oaa oeen onerea, urged and refused. It
only remains for me humbly, to ask the
prayers of the faithful in Christ Jesus that
my erring child may be. brought back to
the way of truth and peace: and for my
self, that I may have grace to bear and do
me holy will of Uod." ,
OLD BACHELORS.
Three old bachelors are, or were very re
living in Prince George county,
mary land. Tbey are brothers, by t the
name of Beale, the youngest of whom has
cvucu me good old age of 'three score
and ten.' They are all old bachelors, each
cnensning tor the female sex somewhat of
tne regards of Jonathan Oldbuck. The

mitted on their place. Their cookinn- is
done by a negro man, who belongs to them
and who also' is their treasurer, and mana
ges their finances. r Many curious aneedtf
tes are related of their eccentricities. - The
names of these three ' worthies are Shad
rach, Mesheck and Abednegcv
A 1 ennsylTania editor says: 'Somebody

. COLLEGE FRACAS.
A Boston correspondent of the Journal
of Commerce writes :
We hear of a disturbance among the
students of Dartmouth College. It is said
to have occurred in this wise : Several
Sophomores, not having the fear of the con
sequences before their eyes, painted the
seats of the Freshmen's recitation room.
The freshmen retaliated by greasing the
seats of ihe Sophs. The last now broke
into a r resnman s room, ana snavea oa his
hair close to bis head. Tbey tegarded him
as a leader in the grease movement, but he
was not. Of course, the mischievous
Sophomores were called up before the Qo,
lege authorities, and at the latest accounts
twenty of them were likely to be expelled.
buch scenes were formerly common at
Dartmouth And bwer colleges but for &
number of years they fwve been rare. It
is rumored that the leaders. of these outra

NEW GAME UPON TRAVELLERS
A new game is now being practised up
on travellers, and not without success
The lust case of the kind occurred at Cleve
land. A person accused a fellow traveller
of picking his pocket on the car3. Upon
the arrival of the train, a police officer (bo
gus) arrested him, and took him to a police
court-room, (also bogus) where examina
tion was deferred till morning upon the de
fendant's leaving 100 as ; security, as he
had no friends to sijrn a bond. The 8100
was a dead loss.
WINTER COMING.
Frosts prevailed over a wide extent of
country last week, embracing New "York
New Jersey, ' Illinois, Massachusetts 'and
Vermont. In Massachusetts the frost, was
very severe.
