f - SI 1 VOLUME X NUMBER 91. J WILMINGTON, N. C SATURDAY MORNING,: OCTOBER' 13, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER 1191 jr. MM 'A I I hi .4 : ' ' - ' " "r "' ' " 1 ' j The Valley of the Yo-Ststnlty, California, ' " aud its Stopeiidotis Waterfalls. Tl.e Mariposu- Gazette ta-published a cotnmuriication from a Mr., J. Hutch. injrs. wttr visited this valley in company u-rth Msrs. Ayras rvl MilUr.l, two. gew tlemen belonging to S.tn Francisco, and Mr Siuir, of Cottlterville. As?uaihi ttiiit these gemkmm are known lo the .ed itors of the Mariposa Gi.zetiev and thalihe account is therefore reliable, we cannot but ersrd" with. wonder and admiration the a - scenery destTiheil. ylhe pitrf j ppewrs to hnve started from nn India, village on the -frtsijo with two Indian guides, and the writer say : ' - ; " From Mr. Hunt's store we kept n east-of-Horth course up the dirule between the- Fresno and Chowchillah valleys ; thnce, desceLiding- towartla the south fork of the Merced river and winding around a very rocky point, we climbed n arly to the fitfge oC the mitldle or main-fork of the Merced,:and, descending towards the Yo-Seuiity-valley, came upon a high point clear of trees,- whence we "had our first view of this singular and romantic valley ; nd, as the scene .opened in full view be fore us, iwe were almost speechless vih admiration at it3 wild and sublime gran--deur. : . .. - - - -On the north side stands a bold per jendicu!ar mountaiii . jof granue, shaped like an immense , tower. It f lofty topis covered with great pines that, in the dis tance, seem but shrubs. Our Indian guides cv lied this the 'Capitan. ' It measures from the valley to its snmmit about two thou sand eight hundred feet. . ; Just opposite this, on the south side of the valley, our attention was attracted by a .magnificent waterfall about seven hun dred feet in height. It looked like a long broad feather ot silver depending over a precipice ; and, as this feathery tail of leaping . spray thus hung, a slight breeze moved t from side to side, and, as the last rays of the setting sun were tinging it with rainbow hues, the red woul I mix with the purple, and the purple with the yellow, and the yellow with the green, and the green with the silvery sheen of its whiten ed foam as it danced in space f , . .l Passing further up the valley, we were struck with the awful grandeur of the im mense mountains on either side, some per pendicular and some a httle sloping. One looks like a lighthouse, another like u jgri ant capital of immense dimensions; all are singular and sur.t.ounted by pipes. We crossed the river, and,'still advanc ing up the valley, turned a point, -and be fore us was an indescribable sight a waterfall-two thousand two hundred feet in height, the highest in the world. It rush es over the cliffs, and, with one bold leap, falls one thousand two hundred feet, then a third of over five hundred feet ; the thn-e leaps making two thousand two hundred feet. V ' - -- i5 Standing upon the opposite side of' the valley ami looking at the tall pines berow. the great height of these fails can at a glnnce be comprehended. M About ten miles from the lower end of the valley there is' another fall of trot less than iifieen hundred feet. This. , wiih sratller falls and a lake, mark the he id of the Yo Semity valley, which is, therefore, about ten miles in length and from a half to one mile in width. Although there, is "gool land enough for several farms, it can not be considered upon the whole as a good farming valley ; but speckled trout, grouse, asd pigeons, are plentiful." '--.s A YOUXO GIRL IN A CATHOLIC PRISON. . By the arrival. of the steamship Ariel on the 14th, we glean from the foreign news the following statement concerning the for cible iinprisonment; of a young girl, in a convent. The account says: S - Nothing was talked of in Munich but the mysterious disappearance of a young girl. The little romance of real life, as told by a Nuremberg paper, runs thus : : - There i an out-of-lhe way place in the neighborhood of Munich called the "An ger," (common.) on which stands the con vent of the so-called "Poor SchoorSisters." A young girl entered this convent, and, af ter a time, was sent as a novice to a branch establishment at Rosenheim, where she suddenly recollected that she was the pos sessor of youth, health, and nine thousand florins, (700.) " , She announced her resolution not to take the veil, and was summoned to return to the u Angler." .On the road she called on one of her relations, an employee, who, in stead of giving her protection, ordered her to go to the convent. She obeyed, and for some time nothing more was heard of her. Such singular rumors circulated, that the civil authorities were forced to take up the matterTXH was found that the girl was .well,' buf closely confined in the convent he resolutely refuses to take the veil, and the trustee of her deceased parent's will is now :endeavoririg ' to- get her out of the clutches of the pious sisters. FIGHT BETWEEN DIGNITARIES I The Louisville Courier states that a fight occurred in Richmond, Mo., the other day, between Hon. M. Oliver and Gov. King. They were separated just as the Governor was in a fair way of getting well whipped. The Governor struck "the first lick.
