" : Some thirty years, aince, at ope of the Philadelphia theatres, a pageant was in re hearsal, in' which it was necessary to have an elephant. No elephant was to be hacL The "wild beast," were all traveling, and - he property man, stage director. aDd man agers, filDQOst had fits when they thought tf it. Days passed in the hopeless task of trying to secure one; but at last Yankee , Ingenuity triumphed, as indeed it always tloee, and an elephant was made to order, W wood, skins, paint and varnish. Thus , far the matter was all very well ; but as yet they had found no means to make said combination travel. Here, again, the gen js of the managers, trie stage director and property man stuck out, and two "broths" Were duly installed as legs. Ned C one of the true and . genuine b'hoy6," held the responsible station of fore legs, and for several nights he played that heavy part to the entire satisfaction of the man agers and the-delight of the audience. The part, however, was a very tedious onfcj as the elephant was obliged to be on the stage for about an hour, and Ned was rather too fond of the bottle to remain so long without " wetting his whistle," so he sets his wits to work to carry a wee drop with him. The' eyes of the elephant be ing made of .two porter bottles, with the neck in, Ned conceived the j brilliant idea of "filling them with good stuff This "he fully carried out ; and elated with success he willingly undertook to phiy fore legs again. ' - - - Night came on, the theatre was densely crowded with the citizens of the Quaker city the music was played in the sweet est strains- -the curtain rose and the play began-. "Ned. and "hind legs" inarched upon the stage... The elephant was greet ed with round upon round of applause. The decorations and . the trapping were gorgeous. The elephant; ami -the prince seated upon his' back, were loudly cheered The play proceeded ; the elephant was marched round'and round upon the stage. The four legs got dry; withdrew one of corks, and treated the hind legs, and then drank the health of the audience in a bum pex of genuine elephant eye whiskey, a brand, bv the wav. till then unknown. , On went the play, and on went Ned drinking. -The conclusion march was to be made the signal was , given, and the fore legs staggered towards the front of the stage. The conductor pulled the ears of the ele phant to the right the fore legs staggered to the left. The foot light obstructed the way, and he raised his foot and stepped plumb into the- orchestra f Down went the fore legs on the leader's fiddle over, of - course, turned the elephant, , sending the prince and hind legs into the middle of the pit. The managers stood horror struck the prince and the hind legs lay confound , ,edr the boxes in convulsions, the actors . choking with laughter, and poor Ned, cas ting one look, a strange blending of drunk enness, grief and laughter at the scene, fled easily out of the theatre, closely fol Jowed by the leader, with the wreck of his fiddle, performing various cut and thrust , motions in the air. The curtain dropped on a, scene behind the scenes. No more pageant no more fore legs everybody held their sides. Music, actors, pit, boxes and gallery, rushed from the theatre, shrie king between every breath " Hare you seen the elephant T" - ' FATE OF GENIUS. In The reign of "Bloody Mary," of England when the good bishop Hooper was about to be burned to death, a blind boy, by much importunity, prevailed on the guard to bring him to the bishop. This boy had lately suffered imprison ment in Glouscester, for confessing the truth. ' After the bishop had examined him concerning his faith, and the cause of his imprisonment, -he looked on him steadfastly, tears standing in his eyes, and said, "Ah, poor boy God hath ta ken from thee , thy out ward sight, for what reason he best khoweth; . but he hath endued thy soul with the eye of knowledge and laith. God give thee grace continually to pray unto him, that thou lose not that sight; for thou shouldst then be b'ind both in body and soul." The boy's, name was Thomas Dow ry. How often or how long, he had en dured imprisonment for the truth's sake, is not kuown, but on his final examina tion ht was brought before Dr. Wil liams, Chancellor of Glouchester, siting judicially, with the register . of the dio cese 111 the consistory, near the south door of the cathedral church who ad ministered the usual articles, chiefly ur ging that on trausubstautiation, and saying: "Dost thou not believe that after the words of consecration . spoken by the priest, there remaineth the very real body of Christ in the sacrament of the altar?" . "No," answered the blind boy, "that I do not." "Then said the Chancellor, "thou art a heretic and shall be burned. But who taught you this heresy ? "Yon, Master Chancellor." "Where, I pray thee V "Even in yonder place," reified the boy turning and pointing with his hand towards where the pulpit stood. The Chancellor again inquired. "When did I teach thee so 1 Dowry answered, "When you preach ed there (naming a day) a sermon to all men as well as to me, upon the sa crament. You said the sacrament was to be received spiritually, by faith, and not carnally, as the priests have hereto fore taught. .The shameless apostle answered : "Then do as I havedonf, thou shalt lire and escape hnrniug." ' The blind boy2hid : "Though you can so easily dispense with yourselt ; mock God, the world and your conscience, yet I will not do so." " Then God have mercy upon thee," rejoined the Chancellor; "fori will read the condemnation sentence against thee God's will be fulfilled !" answered the young martyr. Hereupon the Register beina moved with the scene, stood up, and said to the Chancellor : "Fie, for sham, man ! will you read the sentence against him, and condemn yourself? - Away, away, and substitute some other to give sentence and judg ment." "No, Register," said the fearfully hardened man, I will obey the law, and give sentence myself according to mine offic- . : : v : ;":' 1 He did so : delivered lilm to the se cular rower, who, on the very same day led him to the place of "execution at Gloucester together with one Thomas Crocker, a poor bricklayer, condemned also for the like testimony of the truth; when both tn one fire, -most constantly and joyfully yielded their souls into the hands of the Jjord Jesus.
