WHOLE NUMBER 1 1 95 13tal HONEST LABOR. j Labsr honest labor, is mighty and beau I.. tiful. Actively it is the ruling clement of life, and its- highest relish. Luxuries and conquests are the result of labor ; we can , imugine nothing without it. The noblest "V man of earthis he who puts hands cheer m fully and proudly to honest labor. Labor is a business and ordinance of God. Sus pend labor.and where is the glory and pomp of earth the fruit fields and palaces, nd flhionings of matter for which men , sjrive and war? Let the labor scorner look tnfoumi him, look to himself, and learn vhatar the trophies of toil. From the O trown of his head to the sole of his foot, Unless he is a Carib, made as the beast, he is debtor and slave of toil. Where g-ets the garmenting and equipage ? Let labor 1 answer. Labor which makes music in the mine, and the furrow, and at the forge. O, scorn labor, do you man who never yet earned a morsel of bread. Labor pities you, proud fool, and laughs you to scorn. You shall pass to dust forgotten; but la ( bor will live on forever, glorious in its con quest and monuments. A singular triumph of affection and art is related by the Portsmouth (N. H.) Chronicle. Johnathan Dearborn, of that place, lost an interesting little daughter of eight years, of whom no likeness remained except such as was pictured in the memo ries of surviving friends. A brother of the deceased, a mere boy, insisted that a good portrait of his little sister might be obtain ed from such a description as he could give the artist, and in spite of remonstrances be started for Boston with the purpose of car rying out the idea. His plan was to visit all the picture galleries to which he could obtain access, and by selecting one feature from one picture and another from another thus get a combination that should answer to the picture that was so vividly impressed upon his memory. And, strange to say, after numberless discouragements and two outright failures, the enthusiastic boy suc ceeded even beyond his own ardent ex pectations, and hid the satisfaction of re turning home with a portrait that was re cognised as a most beautiful and correct likeness of the dear lest one- Springfield Republican. A CONCLUSION. A nervous old fellow up town, whose ideas of preaching are not of the most ex alted character, came into a neighboring store the other Monday morning, with, Neighbor, what do you think of preach ing ?' The question was abrupt and the neighbor was rather puzzled how to take him, whether he meant critically, or mor ally, or intellectually. 'Why?' said he by way of answer. 'Oh !' responded the old one, 'I think preaching is good, sometimes. There's my son, in there now, fine boy, ex cellent boy, why he selis some days a hun dred and fifty dollars' worth of goods, I think preaching is good, sometimes; Satur day night a woman stole a pair of shoes, worth seventy five cents, carried 'em off; went to church next day, minister told her ll about bell and them things, to-day she trings 'em back; guess they "didn't fit her; very sorry for it, oh, yes, preaching is good, sometimes; I think, preaching is.' The old gentleman having concluded his oration, walked out as abruptly as he had entered. BOARDING. What do you charge for board Y as Ijed a tall Green Mountain boy, as he walked up to the bar ot a second-rate hotel in New York: 'what do you ask a week for board and lodging V 'Five ddllars.' 'Five dollars ! that's too much; but I s'pose you'll allow, for the time I am absent from di-iner and supper?' 'Certainly; thirty seven and a half cents each. Here the conversation ended. and the Yankee took up his quarters for two weeks. During this timo he lod ged and breakfasted at the hotel, but did not take either dinner or supper, say ing his business detained him in ano the portion of the town. At the expi ration of the two weeks, he again wal ked up to thu bar, and said: 'Spose we settle that account; I'm goitig in a few minutes.' The landlord handed him his account : -'two weeks board at five dollars ten dollars.' 'Here stranger,' said the Yankee, 'this is wrong; you've made a "mistake; you've not deducted the times I was absent from dinner and supper 14 days, 2 meals per day; 28 meals at 37 1-2 cents each 10 dollars and 50 cents. If you've not got the 50 cents that's due me, I'll take a drink and the balance in cigars.' A little boy, not over four years of age, while going down Broadway, N. York, wag stopped by a crowd of men, seated in front of the Broadway Hotel. One of the company, who had during the evening made repeated efforts at wit, said to the boy: . ' . -- 'Sonny, doe 3 your mamma ,know you'r out?' -. .' - l The little fellow very coolly answered : "Yes sir, my ma gave me three cents to buy a monkey are you for sale ?M and then passed on, whistling "Yankee Doo dle," leaving the crowd convulsed with laughter. . . 'A married ladywho was very fond of ber husband, Yiotwithf landing bis extreme ugliness of person, once said to a witty ac quaintance 'What do you think 1 my bus band has gone and laid out fifty dollars, for a large monkey on purpose to please me l' - ' The dear lit'.le man,' cried the other ; 'well, it is just like him. AN INTERESTING RELIC. : The Jackson Association of Washington D. C, have presented to the Empire Asso , ciation of Baltimor, Md., a six pounder brass cannon, captured from the British at the battle ot New Orleans by Gen. Jack- 'Did you know,' said a cunning Yan kee to a Jew 'that ihey hang Jews an.l Jackasses together in Poland V 'Indeed ! then it. is well that you and I are not there,' retort d the Jew. When the misguided and imprudent votary of pleasure finds he has imbibed the seeds of .his painful disease, it too often happens that anilt-tim-ed sense of shame, or dread of discovery, deters him from applying to those who, Irom education and respectability, can alone befriend him, delay ing till the conr utional sysmptotns of thi horrid disease make their appearance such as ulcerated' sore throat, diseased nose, noctural pains in the head and limbs, dimness of sight, deafness, nodes on the shin bones and arms, blotches on the head , face and extremities, progress on with frightful ra pidity, till at last the palate of the mouth or the. bonespf the nose fall in. and the victim of this awful disease becomes a horrid object ofcontmis seration, till death puts a periodto his dreadtul suf ferings, by sending him to "that bourr.e from whence no traveller returns.'' To such ihcrtfo'o.
