A ship was driven out of her course, jj 1 C .. ; aim cast away wimin sigm ui uu uu- lt known coast A II on board might have escaped in the boats, though rather crowded, but one ot the passengers, on their refusing to admit his trunk in any boat, remained in- the ship to unfasten it and get out his pocket-book, which contained notes to the n mount fX20, 000. This, he thought,, would detain him a moment, and he requesrrd them to wait, bin in ihe hurry and confusion of the naometj, he could not immediate ly recollect" what he ha'd done with the key of his trunk. Having found it at last, and secured the money, he perceiv ed to nis dismay, that every boat was oiit of sight, whiie the ship was falling aart, and suddenly he found himself in theea. Catching at some article . that, was' ,'fioafiiig by, he clur.g to it almost micon ' scimisiy, not relaxing .his hold even? when his senses were failing. - Vortti liateiy, he was floating ; to land, and when he revived, he found himself ly ing on the beach. As soon as hi strength returned, he ascended ,an einiri 'nence, but. could see no sign of the wreck, or boats, or any human creature. But, as he was " leaning dcspondingly against a tr c, he was suddetdy startled by being clapped on the shoulder, while a voice in his ear exclaimed 'What cheer, my beauty ?i ' Turning around, he gladly recogniz ed one of the crew, and inqmied what had become of, the, retf. . '-Why, 1 don't know, but I suppose they are saf by this time, j but I have aeu nothing of them. 'Were you with them in the boats V 'No, I stayed on board to the last.' 'And so did I, though I was not a- ware of your being aboard. 1 hope you succeeded as well as I did in saving your property.' 'I had nothing io save but ajack Jcnife and a plug of tobacco both safe enough in my trousers pockets.' Then why did yon not think of sa ving yourself at once?"' . 'No, I could not think of leaving the ship as long as the planks held together. -She-could not say lb t I was not true to the last. But, come, comrade, let us see what kind of quarters we have got into. : ' They travelled some distance with- out any sight of a habitation. Necessi ty quickened their ingenuity ; they were successful in occasionally catching fish, oysters, or birds, in all which the sailor's jack-knife proved of invaluable service, in preparing the proper snares and weapons, in opening the oysters, cutting up, or cleaning the fish or" birds, above all, in "striking a light to make a fire for the purpose of cookery. Once, also, when they were attacked by a wild beast, the sailor, by a prompt use of his jack-knife, saved their lives. They bad lived in this manner for some months, when arriving at the opposite side of the island, they fouml it inhabited by savages, who cond&cted them to their kins- The gentleman, anxious to conciliate his copper-skinned majesty, produced a five .hundred pound bank note, and politely of fered it to his acceptance. I he king ex amined it with some curiosity, applied it to his nose and tongue, and. being satisfied that it was not gcod to eat, returned it with contempt. The gentleman soon found out that bis twenty thousand pounds could not procure him the smallest consideration. The sailor, on the contrary, in' a few .days " became a personage of great importance, V for the many services which he was ena .bled to render with his jack-knife, among a people where iroij was unknown. They liberally supplied all their wants, and his rich friend was glad to profit by his boun ' ty. : v-. ' .- . ' ' One day as they were attending the king on an eminence overlooking the sea, they descried a distant snil evidently imssing the island. They kindled a bonfire and lioist " ed signals, but they did not succeed in at tracting notice. 'If we only had a boat,' exclaimed the sailor, 'I think we couldjjet within bail, and she docs not stand far out, though it is plain she intends to pass without touching this way.' The gr.tlemnn prod need his twenty " thousand pounds, and offered it to the king in exchange for a canoe, but hi ma jesty rejected the roll of paper, and turn d to the sailor with a single word -'knife.' The bargain was immediately closed, Uhe jack-knife was received by the king with no less delight than was experienced ty the Englishmen as they jumped into the anoe. By dint of hard paddling, and a favorable current, tbey got within hail and were taken aboard of the sh p, which pro - -ved to be an English vessel, homeward bound. : " '':'; .?'. f- '". As they came in sight of the white cliffs, the gentleman took the-sailor one side and handed him two notes, which amounted to a thousand pounds and Slid 'You must not refuse to accept this, for you have done for me more than twenty ; times as much as I couid have done. I ; trust you may find these bills, one day -or other, as useful as your jack-knife has been. I have learned by-this time that a man's wealth is to be measured not by the extent of his possessions, but by the use of what he possesses.' ,'Your stairs are very dark, Mr. Dun son; do you think.C can find the bottom?' 'Nothing easier, my dear madam. AH you have to do is to let go the balusters and . make a tumble.' . - - : A HOME.-. If we were to tell numbers of our friends that they do it know- what a 'home" is, they would grow somewhat indignant perhaps use hard words. And. yet it may le rernardedV that ihe numler of persons who know what a genuine home is, by experience, is sur prisingly few. One man in good cir cumstauces will tell us that he has a fine hons of his own in which every comfort aud convenience are provided. He has a wife and children there also, and they give life to the plaee. Very true. I But docs he preler that home, thus furnished and eulivpned, to every other place in the world? Doeshe sigh when the hour for leaving comes,- and smile when he is permitted to rettin.? Does he love to sit by the cheeiful fir and fondle the children, entering into all their little disputes with a' curious interest ? Does hn take particular note of the birds in the cage, and the cat m ar the fire 1 If not, he lias no home, in the dearest sens of the word If his mind is altogether absorbed iri the dusty ways of huMMess if he hurries from the house iu' the morning, and is loth to return at night if, while he is at homy, he con tinues to think, of the -.journal and the ledger and reptlsv the advance of the prattling children, he has no home; he only h;ts a place wltere he lodges and takes his meals. Ah ! happy is he who knows ai;d ap preciates the full Miss ot home ; whose heart is wasmed and harmoijzed by its cheerful influence, and "'-who feels how superior in purity ol pleasure are all its. enjoyments to the turmoil delight of in door life. Thrice happy is such a man. He has discovered the only paradisi this world can afford. It is only such a man who can have a deep and sincere pity for the unfortunate creatures who are homeless. He regards them os be ing cut off from the best iu fie nee of the earth, and exposed to the action of all the darker waves of life. He feels keen ly for him who has no fireside no dear ones to welcome him with smiles, and prattle over the history of the day, no tongue to soothe him when heavy cares have troubled the mind and rendered his heart sore; aud the sympathy of such a man is not slow to overflow in acts of benevolence. A good home is the source of the fountain of .charity in the heart. Our advice to those who have no homes, such as we have described above is, to get them as soon as possible. They can never be contented and sub st tntialit ciarens, nor thoroughly happy men, until they follow this counsel. Get homes. Fill them with the objects of love aud endearment, and seek there for the pure d lights which the world besi des cannot afford. - He who is accustomed to commune with himself in retirement, will sometimes at least, be impressed with the truths which the multitude will nbt tell. him.
