WHOLE NUMBER 1208 111 i 111 I I 111 4 MISCELLANY. 1 From the SpL i ' of Ike Timet, :k hunt extraordinary. 1U' BY ODILLERMO, O. Ti C. Mr. Editor. In a country filling up fets Texas is, aud has been for some years past, it is but natural that we find a-large number of persons who well merit ihe title of "green 'uns. Of this class was John McL e, a native of old Virginia, who became a citizen of Texas soon after it was admitted into the Union. Now friend John was pas sionately fond of hnniing, and scarcely did his foot press Texan soil before he was running in all directions in search of game, but unfortunately he wound up his first exploit by slaving three tameturkies, th" property of an old la dy living in A. This threw such a dam per on his feelings that "it caused him to forego this amusement for some time, until onrf day, when I wished to go hun tiug, and having no rompaiuy, I called by lor John, and aftvr some persuasion vailed upon him to accompany me. Now be it known that north of "the city of A ' n about a milt?, there lives" a wealthy butcher, who, t the time .1 speak of, possessed a large flock of sheep nd goats, and among the latter a tre mendous "Wifliam-gout," who was fa mous for' his tmp'acable hostility to seats of honor" in general, and those, the genus lBjy" in particular. Many a lad he had given a "lift in the world," and had caused as many more' to dis- cover tnat tneir tegs were nor. maufe merely to stretch cloth over, but to pro ject their bodies when prudence advised a retreat.... t Well, on the evening iq question, as John and I were moving noiselessly a long the banks of a small creek, that wanders through the butcher's pasture grounds, I noticed that friend 'Billy" of the horns was eyeingus rather too close ly to bespeak much comfort in the pros pective, and being myself a very prudent personage, and possessing a great relish for a joke, I soon . decided upon what course to pursue. "John," said I, "you see that tree . at the berfd of the creek, about forty yards from here ? Wei I, ydusneak along here by this underbrush on the bank .until -you are about twenty yards from the tree ; then you must get on your hands and knees and crawl to the foot of it. When you get there don't put more thaiv your head through the nnderbru'sh, and see if any ducks are in the pond." ' "Very well," he answered, 'Til do it exactly right ; but what are yorf going 10 do in ' the meantime 1 Take "my flask, I may lose it.". "I am going down 'here and cross dver the creek so as to get a shot as they rise. JSow do be careful, John, and don't show more, than your head, and don't fire 'till I am ready I'll give the "signal." So saying I bounded off toward a lit tle mound just behind, where we were, and out of the reach of his goatship, who had now left the flock, and was approaching John with his head, ears, and tail erect. In th meautime, eager for shot at the ducks, my friend fol lowed my instructions to the letter, and having arrived at the point designated, he dropped down 'on "all fours," and crawled carefully and, quietly along, while friend "Billy" followed with the most inquisitive motions, being entirely at a loss to account for the sudden me tamorphosis of his intended victim-. John finally reached the tree, and putting his head slowly through the bushes, to his great delight perceived five. or six plflmp paddlers on the water, all unconscious of the cruel death im pending over them. ' - "Billy," during this survey -on the, part of John, had approached within two or : three feer, and was scanning him very carefully, as if to pick the most vulnerable part of his body. Hav ing at length apparently decided, he took two or three steps backward, and rearing upon his hinder legs, he sprang forward, and plauted his horns and fore head In that part of friend John where honor is generally supposed to be loca ted, with such good will and effect that he . vanished with most unbecoming haste, and a seeond afterwards the om ' inous sound of a heavy body falling in to the water told but too plainly the fate of the duck-hunter. . I ran down and c tossed the creek opposite to where John was, and found him just getting out of the water, and heaping curses 'upon me for pushing him in, while 'Billy" was standing upon the ' other hank, very complacently viewing the scene, as thoush he was innocent of all O i- . participation in it. . 5 John not having perceived his goat . ship, made the verv com tort in? asser tion that he intended "to give roe a good licking for it," and was coolly preparing to put his. words into effect, when I pointed to the real perpetrator of the mischief, and burst into a laush. He .eazed at "Billy" for a moment, then ta king" up his gun and starting otf, he xim- etlv remaricea ... ,. ., "Well, W.f you may use my head ior a loot Da 11 11 1 ever again come duck ing and co home ducked" Nov. 6T 1855. " A, master said to his ' servant, ! am "jsick-gto such a physician and bring rne medicine." The servant said, "Per haps the doctor will not be at home." Ga said the master "and see." "Per haps, if I should meet with him, perhaps he will not give me the medicine. "Take a note, and he will not refuse," said the master 'But, even if he should give it to me, it will do you no good." "You base scoundrel "-exclaimed the enraged master, "will he give, it to you as long as you keep sitting here?" "And if he should give it me," continued the servant' "and it should do you gooa, you must die at some time you may as well die now as then." r ELOPEMENT. The Claiborne, La. Advocate, of the31st has an account of an exiruonlinarj series of events which is published under the headirtg-Elopement, marriajre, ciril com motion and Bloodshed," and of which the L follnwjng is a condens!iiion ; f About four or six weks ago there eloped from Terry ville, in Claiborne parish, one Dr. Clement and one Sitrah T. Wafer, an orphan heiress of u wealthy Louisiana planter, beinr at the time at School at Ter ryville. To Arkansas they proceeded with the inmost dispatch, when the n iptial cer emonies was duly performed. I On their return, the happy couple were met by trSe brother of the bride who pro ceeded to chastise the proorn for the ab duction of his sister. Finally,' however, they were allowed to proceed 10 the resi dence of the Doctor in Arcadia, JJienville Parish, whence, a few days afterwards, the bride was summoned to the bedside of a sick sister. While at herouse, Mrs. Cle ment signed a letter, wriuen by her brother-in-law, in which she accused her husband of deception! cowardice, age- and ugliness, and avowing her determination not to live with him. She then 'accompanied her sis ter to lied River, in the parish of Kossiter, nd too4fvp ber residence in the home of another sister. Dr. Clement followed in purtu t viih fifteen stalwart friends armed cap apie, and demanded the person of Mrs. Clement, who, under the circumstances, yielded on condition that she should be ta ken to the residence of her uncle, Rev. Mr. Wafer, an estimable gentleman, and there be allowed two days for reflection as to her future course. Her brother immediately raised a force of armed men, and under took to rescue his sister, but on approach ing the house of his uncle, found it sur rounded by the Doctor's army, with cock ed guns, and thought fit to retire. He im mediately proceeded to Homer, and made such representations as caused the issuance of a warrant for the arr st of Dr. Clement and party, for the forcible abduction and imprisonment of his sister. The Deputy Sheriff summoned a posse to whom the Doctor's party submitted. Next morning, about nine o'clock, Claiborne was thrown into violent commotion by the sudden ap pearance in its midst, on horseback, and with double-bareled guns, of the en ire bo dy of men, some sixty in number, thrown together, as above stated, on the night pre vious, and in the centre of the concourse, mirabUc diciu, the hero and beroiire seated side by side in a buggy. The bloodshed spoken of above was cau sed by the accidental discharge of ohe of the guns of this party ,'wounding ; a. lawyer who was standing in his office. The par ties were brought before a justice for trial and a habeas corpus was issued by the judge of the District Court and served upon the doctor, commanding him to produce the body of his wife lhe result of the trial was that all parlies were discharged, but the trouble has not ended here,' for while the excitement was going on our heroine was spirited away to parts unknown ; but the general opinion is that she has been transported to Arkansas, where she is pro tected or guarded by forty double-barrelled guns and a howitzer I And thither a con siderable part of the multitude, recently as sembled in Claiborne, have betaken tnem selves, "armed and equipped" as the law doesn't direct. It appeared on the trial of one of the writs that Miss Wafer had been engaged to a brother of her sister-in-law, but some person unknown having forged a letter; purporting to be from her fiance, wherein she was" discarded, her elopement with the Doctor was precapitatetl, and the unfortu nate girl soon loumi sne wa3 linked to a man whom she could not love, and, in fact, positively disliked.
