the clerk master of the fieldand was never,
afterwards, seen 'at that post office. .. " i.
The following anecdotes are- illustrative
of the amusing incidents which occasion
ally come ,' under s the "'eye, of? postoffice
clerks: f - .---- '( -
A little- bright ejed, flaxen haired boy
was one day. observed to enter the vestibule
of the postoffice ai Washington, with a let
ter in his hand, and to wait very'modestly
for the. departure of the crowd - collected.
about the delivery ,windowv; As soon as
the place was cleared,' he approached the
letter box and carefully deposited his epis
tle therein, lingering near, as iftG watch
over the safety of, the precious document
His motions attracted the attention': of the
clerk-stfttioned at the window, whose cur
iosity induced him to examine the sgpscrip
tion oflhe letter just deposited by ; tho lit
tle fellow. ' The address on the letter s was
simply, ;'To my Dear Grandmother, Louis
iana;' doubtless some good old lady, whose
memory, in the mrnd of her innocent grand
child, was redolent of cake end candy,' nnd
all the various 'goodies' which grandmoth
ers are generally so "ready to supply,- to
say nothing of the various -well-meant offi
ces of kindness ta which their-sometimbs
blind affection prompts them. Look'here,
my little ni tn,' said ihe clerk,' 'what is your
i granumotner s name, and where does she
live7' .
-V w hy, she's my grandma,- and lives
in Louisiana.' ' - "
- Yes, I see that on the Idtter, but it
will never'get tp her if her iiame isn't
put on, and the. place -where she lives.
- 'Well,' please put it on sir.' ' ' 4
' -But I shall not know what her name
is; unless- you felt me.'
; 'Why, s:r, she's i my grandma don't
you know her ? Sho used to live" at my
nouse.
, - After the display of? considerable; iti-
genuity on the part of., the clerk, and a
good deal ofinnocentf : evasion by the
child, the old lady's name and place of
restaence were nuaiiy ascertauird, and
added to the address; after which the
little one went -ton his way rejoicing'in
the assurance -given by the - clerk that
now his 'dear grandmother' would cer
tainly receive the jmpoi taut epistle from
