We ask for the letter 'an attentive persnal : - Barque Meldon, Bkaufoht Haebor, -.: - . " March 18tb, 1856, Dear Sib.'. . - .:. , I 1, In answer toyour note of this date mak ing; enquiries about ihe dimensions of this vessel, and requesting m r opinion relative to the facilities of the harbor for; ships of heavy tonnage, I have to inform'you, that the Barque Meldon measures length . of : keel 110- feet, breadth of beam ;27 feet. depth of hole 17 feet, draft of water now with 550 tons rails on board, 10 1-2 feet. With regard to the harbor, it is easyof access and attords shelter from all winds and the bottom is excellent for anchoring. In any ordinary time sailing, vessels could enter the harbor drawing 18 feet; with the assistance of steam lugs, Vessels might cross the. bar drawing 19 feet with perfect safety. - ,: It gives me pleasure to say as this is my first visit to - the coast of North Carolina, that the representation abroad about Beau fort Harbor, does it great injustice, and I was most agreeably disappointed. : The bar and harbor are unexceptionablethe Pilots wi the coast are polite & competent and obtained without difficulty, r 1 shall return to England and endeavour to get another cargo of Mr Stanly's rails, for I know of no place 1 would sooner sail from, than the Port of Beau for L ; I am with much regard, Yours, GEa JOHNSON. ' - - A OIJAM OF SUS8HISTE IN AH OMNIBUS, i i ;VVe have been much impressed with the following simple anecdote it; one of the New Yoik letters of "Fidelus" to the Boston Tranfcript : It was bitter cold the other night when I entered a Broadway omnibus that pitched over the ice furrows like a ship hi a gal ; there were two handsome ladies, evidently on their way; to Wat lack's or the Varieties, with an assiduous heau a gruffy old gentleman, in one cor ner and a demure little woman - in an other ; presently in jumped a little girl, with a red hood encircling her face, which wore a very grave and care-worn, yet eager look; she was enveloped, in a large thick shawl that fell to her an cles 't aftT looking intently at the face of every passenger, she ptit her hand be neath her shawl arid .'struck tip a most plaintive air on a harmonica concealed there ; the two handsome ladies became iiitert-sted, and their : beau fumbled in his pocket;" the demure little woman brightened up and smiled on the poor musician ; the gruffy old gent untied his muffler and sighed; thus encouraged, the child suddenly began to sing a pen sive ditty, the omnibus, mean time, quiv ering and cracking, but despite the ugly m. lion and the bitter wind, all the pas sengers melted at heart and bestowed such a pile of pennies on their volunteer comforter that she . ceased to sing and play, in order to count her gains, then depositing them in her pocket, she drop ped her anxious sorrowful look, blinked like a new waked kitten, and began such a rapturously lively air that the driver mriiccT round to peep at her,-and the six inside all laughed together. ITenacity of Life in a Tortoise. :A water tortoise in the possesion of Mr. Ji G. Shute, of Wohurn, Mass., an am ateur Zoologist, has just died, after liv ing in water two years and six months without food. It is believed that this rep tile's wonderful tenacity of life, Redi, a distinguished Italian phyeician, kept one tasting eighteen months, and a land tor toise, in which he had removed its entire brain, lived and was active more than six months afterwards. It seems that this lowly animal, enclosed in a strong suit of armor, in which it ordinarily lives above a century, is no less dilatory is the process of dying than in its motion, which have passed into a proverb, t Boston Trav. Farming in TEXAs.-Small farming is a good business m l exas. I he Hous ton Star says that a gentleman some years ago bought a small farm in that vicinity on a credit. He was then over 50 years of age and in bad health and had a family of some half a dozen children to support. This gentleman has paid for his tarm, and now makes annua lly over $1,000, with no other aid than that afforded by his own family Those who expect to do likewise, how ever, must calculate upon hard work and strict economy. Burning New York, a Boston editor aigues, would de no great achievement for the English. It is no more lhan the New Yorkers do themselves once in five years : and when the English should have destroyed that village, they would have the 'satisfaction of knowing that they had burned $100,000,000 worth of property belonging to their own country men.'. -' 'i WHY IS PORTSMOUTH FORTIFIED. I ne tormiiiaoie defensive works id course of construction at Portsmouth, (England) nave excited tne surprise of soma of the Paris journals, and the Assemblee KatianaU thus expresses itself: fif even the approaching conclusion of a peace is not quite assured, it may be de manned in the face of what danger these works are now being constructed t As suredly, the Russian squadron now buried in the harbor ot Sevastopol was never a menace to the British coast, and the two remaining Russian squadrons which still flout at Cronstadt and Helsingfors have shown that their ambition wisely consists in defense and not in attack: A war be t ween cngiana ana tne united states a war which is by no means - probable, not withstanding the passing difficulties of the moment would tn no case expose : the powerful squadron of Great Britain to be braved in their ports by the American na vy. It is in vain that .we search for the enemy against whom it is now a question of defending Portsmouth." s IMPORTANT TO NEGRO STEALERS. We publish to day one of the series of acts passed by the General Assembly to provide more effectuaily for the protection of the slave interests of the State. Agents of the 'underground railroad,1 and especial ly j the negro-loving skippers of Yankee vessels frequenting the . waters of Virginia, should give this law a careful perusal. " One of the sections of this Act provides hat any free person concerned in the es cape of a slave from that State, shall be confined in the penitentiary hot ' less tban five or more than ten years ; the jury, at its discretion, may also condemn the offen der to be publicly whipped, to such an ex tent and at such limes as H may see m, with the 8inrle limitation that no whip ping shall exceed thirty-nine lashes in one day. It the persoq, so onenamg snau as the time be in command of, or attached to a vessel, the same shall be forfeited to the Uommonwealtb. icicAmona -w iug . . ' A Worcester (Mass ) Court has decided that railroad conductors have a right to put any passenger out of the cars by force who refuses to comply wuh the rules, of the company. ; A passenger wished to femam on the platform of the cars, (a very danger ous position,) and refusing to enter the car i he conductor put him off at the next sta tion. He said that as the rules of the Cor-J poration forbidding riding upon the plat form of the cars were : reasonable and ne cessary, and were several times brought to ihe attention of the complainant, the con ductor had a right to prevent complainant from riding upon the cars and the right to use reasonable force tn ejecting him there from, for non-compliance. WTe have good reasons for knowing that the body of this man, who-e name alive was once so potent in Wall street, came here in the steamer Arago, from Havre, wrapped vp like a package ttf goods, i he body was here, uncalled for, in a ware house, from Satturday to Monday, and on that day was taken by his relatives for in -terment. A CLINCHER. - An American paper says tnis is the me thod of catching t'gers in India: A man carries a board on which a human figure ij painted :, and as soon as he arrives at the den he knocks behind the board with a hammer-; the noise suddenly rouses the tiger, when he flies in a direct line at the board and gnsps it, and the man behind it clinches its claws into the wood, and so secures him, English paper. - - GIN.
