It is said that ' Russia supports the pretensions of Prussiai ibis iook piace at tne meeting 01 the zzd Another meeting was held on the 24th, but nothinjp.had transpired of what thea took place.. The opinion 'prevailed that the Conference would ultimately resolve itself into an European Congress. - . j ; Peace is generally regarded as certain.; The correspondent of the Times in the Cri mea says that the war party there still cher ish tbe hope that the peace negotiations may break down.. It may suit the French (be says) to make concessions, but it ought not to suit the English. The French doubtless consider that they have done : enough for' honor, glory, and to revenge their reverses of 1812, and they cannot af ford to"carry on the war as England can. But their army, however numerous on pa per, is dwindling sadly. The scurvy and fever are playing havoc in its ranks. The mortality is stated to be one hundred and twenty per day, and frequently more. The Allies had commenced the demolition of the enclosure lines around SebastopoL ' The Copenhagen correspondent of the London Times states that the Danish Com-: missarv had submitted to the Cooenharen . Conference a proposal for the capitaliza tion of the Sound dues; fixing thirty-five millions of rjx dollars as the minimum in demnity which Denmark claimed. ;The writer states further that the United Stales mvnrr A emWnaA (a talrA napff r iK.it a ference, the question would in all probabil ity be resolved .without their- co-operation. ;: " 1 Mr. Buchanan was to leave Southamp- tnn An lha Ot K rf A nril fn t K n bIim A go. He had gone to Paris, accompanied by Mr. Campbell, the American Consul at Londonnd Mr. Croskey, the American ConsuUat Southampton. He would visit the Hague before his return. I he city of Parma, in Italy, had been again laid under siege owing to the fre quent . disturbances r and assassinations there. HCJ v; Sir Hyde Parker, commander of the English naval fotcee'trt the East Indies, died at Davenport on the 21st of March. Sir Henry Poitinger died at Malta on the 18th ' Advices from Hamburg state that Com modore Watson has declared all the Rus sian Baltic ports in a state of blockade. Advices from Persia state that Dost Ma hommed had taken possession of Canda har Persian troops were marching against him. - .- ' V;::-l4VVv?i -.V-? .v., ' A telegraphic despatch from Jassy states that the courier who was the bearer of the formatdemand for a union of the principali ties, addressed to Count Walewsike had been arrested at Czarowitz. ; Advices from Nicolaieff state that a com mission arrived there from St Petersburirh on the 4th of March and knmediatly com menced operations for the abandonment of that place as a military depot. ;. It was stated! that it would be , declared a free port THE MOUNT VERNON ESTATE. A correspondent of the New York Tn bune, speaking of the proposed purchase of this estate, says: ! ; v But-Mr. Washington will sell to the Uni ted States or to the State of Virginia, and his price to either is $ 200,000. For. this he proposes to give only the two hundred acres rso next the Potomac which include the-ho"use and tomb of Washington, (and whictf, had they not been . Washington's, would; not fetch 920,000.) He wilt only sell with the understanding that the place is to be. kept as it should be, (not as it has been,) as a. patriotic memorial of the illus trious dead. ' ; - I hear that Mr. Washington derives quite an income from Mount Vernon, notwith standing its sterility. He received 91,500 last year of the steamboat which plies be tweenjhis city and Ml Vernon for the pri vilege of landing passengers at the latter, and he has just sold timber off the place to lhe amount of 912,000, to be manufactured into Mount Vernon canes, snuff boxes, &c. I believe this trade is yet in its infancy, and is expected to expand. Mr. Washington is some 35 to 40 years old, is married and has five children the youngest (an infant) is a son, and the only male child born in the Washington mansion since it became such. . . . "-,'-:'':.:...,--:y-'' The same writer says that he knows a gentleman who says be would give 9250,. 000 for the place, and thinks be could then make a good thing of it; but he can't get it, of course. ; TORNADO IN PHILADELPHIA. Philadelphia, April 13. The wind blew a perfect tornado last night and unroofed one hundred and .fifty ' bouses in different sections of this city.. As far as heard from there has been no loss of life. Two large brick churches and three factories in Ken sington were unroofed. The large boiler house of the Franklin Iron Works, one hundred and fifty feet long, was totally de molished., The Trenton railroad depot in Kensington was partially destroyed. - - . ; : OFF FOR KANSAS. Several : young ' men left Richmond Thursday evening last; for Kansas territo ry. :They go at their own expense, and with a determination to give their hearty co-operation with the defenders of Southern rights.-.., , .-- 'v ' - - PERILOUS SITUATION. There was a great excitement caused at Rochester (N Y.) on Monday morning by a report that a man was on a cake of tee in the river near tne tans, oeyond reach from the shore. Hundreds of people rush ed to the river bank on both sides below the falls to ascertain the truth of. the ru mor. It turned out that a man was on a small cake of ice grounded in the river a short distance below the falls, about one hundred feet from the shore. ihe water was rushing swiftly by him on either side towards the rapid and lower falls, over which he would speedily pass if the ice upon which be stood should become dis lodged. His perilous position and the im minent danger of his being speedily car ned away caused intense excitement among the people upon the shore. It was discovered that the unfortunate man had but one arm, which of'course prevented bun from swimming tq the shore, as a strong man might have done. Liberal sums were offered by citizens for a boat or any person who would rescue the man. After an hour and a quarter of intense anxiety the man was rescued by means of a rope which was earned to him from the shore by a plank pushed into the stream from the shore above. He was drawn ashore amidst the cheers of the multitude. He proved to be Jacob Suiter, who resides on North Clinton street. He says be was gathering drift wood,, and stepped upon the ice beside the water to seize a stick, when the ice broke away and floated him into the stream. Rochester Union. ' A LUCKY FELLOW. The Rogersville (Tennessee) Times has the following : " A short time since a fellow from Buffa lo Creek, Carter county, was imprisoned in Elizabethtown jail, for burning a barn. The citizens of ihe place learning that he was from the neighborhood where the small pox was raging, broke open the jail and turned him out, and then told him if he didn t leave town in fifteen minutes, they would tar and feather him." FEELINGJHIS PESPONSIBILITY. V The Prussian School Counsellor Dinton nobly said, " I promised God that I would look upon every Prussian peasant child as a being who could complain of me before God, if I did not provide him the best ed ucation as a man and a Christian which it was possible for me to provide," CAVING IN OF A TUNNEL. THE CRITERION; 1 L1TERAGI AID CBITICll WEEKLY JOURNAL, 16 pages, 4to. IT 7" AS commenced on the 3d of November, 1855, V and has tbua far received very general aporo nation. ; Anxioua to extend its influence, and place it upon a substantial basis of support, the Publish er desires most earnestly to direct the attention of the thinning public uf America to its claims upon their consideration. The main feature of the CRITERION is Its Re views of Current Literature. In this department are given thorough and able criticisms of all tne most important Booka as they are issued, pointing out their chief characteris es, and indicating their moral tendencies, thus keeping its readers informed of all new publieationa which deserve their attention. It also contain Copious Intelligence of Affairs in lie Literary World, Gossip concerning Books and Writers, Announcements vf contemplated Publications, and Lists of few Books issued Hi' A merica and Europe. The Drama, Music, Fine Arts, and Science, also receive attention, and several columns of carefully elected and agreeable mat er are given in each number. In addition to the abova there is a de partment of Miscellanea lor reading of an enter taining character, carefully selected from new books and the ablest reviews, and a weekly collection ot Notes and Queries, which contain a great variety of curioua and valuable information. It is confident! believed that a journal such as the CRITERION cannot fail to have a good effect upon our national literature, and to some extent upon i ur national character. It will be found es pecially valuable in directing the attention of youth to works of real excellence, and encouraging an appreciation for valuable reading, which is being rapidly destroyed by the circulation of superficial and sophistical books. To the reading man the literary intelligence alone must render it very de birable; and to all who wish to promote an improve ment in taste, the encouragement of merit, and an uncompromising condemnation of vicious style, mock sentiment, and evil principles, such sn enter prise cannot at least, should not be indifferent. To members of Historical, Literary and Scienti fic Societies, Lyceums and Debating Clubs, the subjects discussed in this paper will at alt times prove of peculiar interest, and it is the design of the editors to thoroughly canvass from time to time those important philosophical questions which agitate allinquirins minds, correcting false theo ries, and encouraging profitable investigation. The CRITERION is published at3 per an num, payable yearly, half yeaily or quarterly in ad vance. Specimen copies supplied on application to the Publisher, CHARLES R. RODE, .
