From the Soulier IMeiary Messenger. MOTHERS AND CHILDREN. "Mother I the world can utter no nweet erypurer word than thia. What visions , did it once conjure up, of boundless devo i tion, of self-sacrificing love, of lessons, that ; falling ' musically from a mother' lips, taught obedience, truth, and self-restraint. ' Once the mother guided the child with firm, but loving hand, through the flowery mazes of childhood into the broad fields of maturity. She prepared the youthful traveller for the world's encounter; she disciplined the ardent passions, and regula ted the haity temper. . She encompassed the child with a wholesome moral influ ence, and dared say W when its welfare demanded it. She ruled not with an iron rod, but firmly, gently, and the child loved her none the . less because she taught it . the word obedience. We ha v mothers just as self sacrificing as of yore ; but we mis that wholesome moral training that distinguished the rule of the-mothers of the past. "It is vain to close our eyes to the fact, it stares us boldly in the face, the roost monstrous deformity of the nineteenth cen tury : this is the reign of children, at home and at school. The parent is ruled, and the teacher striving in vain to assert his authority is overcome in the battle, waving over his defenseless head the banner of 'moral suasion.' . Alas f for the teacher of this age. He makes rules, his pupils break ... them as easily as they do his panes of glass ; he appeals for redress to the par : enl ; the mother, for the father.'rarely ap pears in these matters, tells him l have no control over my children, they do ns they please,' and she heaves a 6igh over her son's contempt of lawful authority, and her daughter's . headstrong; wilfulness. .She forgets, "or perhaps never knew that she herself is the 'head and front of the offend ing.' Did she teach obedience at home, would resistance at school be the conse quence? Did she rule with gentle res traint, would impatience of all law ensue ? Did she teach her child to 'order himself lowly and reverently to all his betters, would we have such scenes of riot and in -subordination as so frequently disgrace our colleges and schools? Where did these youthful contenders for equality re ceive their first lessor in successful rebel lion? At home, where ; the infantile hand proved stronger than the maternal arm ; where the child's 'I won't' o'mastered the mothers 'you must; where the weak will of the parent, succumbed before the more resolute will of her offspring. "What sort of citizens do these young victors make ? Turbulent resisters of law and order, their names flourish in police re ports, as the headers of mobs ; they are . found among the perpetrators of crime, the miserable culprits of the bar. "In the church they are not of those who :recieve the worJ in meekness,' and conform unhesitatingly i to all her holy ri tes. But tbey are found among the cen sorious critics of sermons ; the opposers of the honored ceremonies and precepts. The seeds of disobedience, sown so suc cessfully in the nursury, shoot up the deadly Upas branches until they sweep against 'the very arch of heaven; man is resisted on earth, and God defied on his awful throne ia the skips. 'There is not a ruler but knows this to be true; not a pastor but sees this inflence at work among his flock ; and not a teach - er contending with "discipline and bread," but laments this deplorable and widely spreading evil. Yes, we want a race of mothers mothers in the true, the legiti mate sense of the word-i mothers with a sense of maternal responsibility mothers who will realize that ' they are educa ting heirs1 for immortal life, and that the waves of Time, rapidly driving them on, will soon set them face to face in Eternity with those children they have educated for endless bliss or unending . woe. O, weak,"yielding, irresolute mother, think of these things 1 I "We do not ask you to oppress with tyranny the young child that looks to you for protection ; we do uot wish even to hint at the lengthening of 'your fan-handles, wfth which to reach your refractery daugh ters across the room, as did the mother of Queen Mary's day ; we would not have you repress the joyous sallies of the child,' or dim with unsympathy the brightness of young affections; we would not wish one innqcent amusement withdrawn, or one flower that springs in its path cut down. So far from it, we would have you fill its little hands with the brightest ofHowers; fold it to your heart with the tenderest love; listen with the deepest sympathy to its confidences; join in its sports; bear pa tiently with its petulance ; outwatch the stars by its restless couch and encompass it with the most devoted love of a mother's , heart But we would not have you re sign it to itself, to its eager passions, its un restrained tempers a miserable victim to parental weakness a lender plant, left to shoot up uncultivated, unpruned, whose luxuriance is of vice, whose blossoms trail in the dust. ; , , "We do not ask jou to farce the young child to obedience, but win it by the power of persuasion, and by constantly setting before it the picture in its most attractive lights. Teach it that it is honorable to obey, that disobedience is criminal in the eight of God. And, in inculcating this lesson, you need not be one iota less amia ble than you now are ; you need fear los ing none of your attractive gentleness, or forfeiting one throb of love that beats for you in the bosom of your. child. That home is the very threshold of heaven, where the pious, gentle mother, exercising her maternal rule in the fear and love of God, teaches obedience, virtue and self-res-f, trainL Such a mother is tha able sustain er of the laws of her country, the effectual co-laborer with the pastor, and the valua ble assistant pf teacher. But alas I for her, who, without counting the fearful costs has poisoned the moral atmosphere of home by culpable neglect, or weak indulgence; who submit to ike degradation of being ruled by her own offspring.-and who allows the-etill small voice of conscience to be hushed by the noisy clamors of the chiM. "Oh, will not themoijs of our country rouse themselves from tpts fearful apathy, and realize their sacred responsibility ? Will they not strive to became mothers, in deed, by exercising their rightful preroga tives ? Will they not hasten to set before their children the most complete, the mosi beautiful .example of obedience on record that of him, who, though Lord of the universe, was yet 'subject unto his pa rents.' ' "When the mothers of America take up the sceptre they have so cowardly laid down, and children are again brought un der home discipline, then will magistrates rule with case, pastors find the way pre pared before them, and the present rojrsjed path of the teacher be made smooth. When mothers become mothers indeed, then will the world regaiti its. proper position, anil cease to present that most extraordinary spectacle ' a world turned upside down.' From Ike Savannah Georgian and Jour., Jane 17. MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT. We are pained to announce the death of a worthy and prominent citizen of our State, in the person of Captain Hamilton Germany, of Rmgold, brother to Geo. W. Garmany, Esq , of this city. The circum stances attending the death of Mr. G are of a truly melancbolly character. On Sa turday last he was out shooting birds, using for the purpose a double barrel shot gun. On one occasion, after discharging one of the barrels, whilst standing on a log he proceeded to reload, his sun Flipped off, striking the log in 6tich a n.anner as to raise the hammer, and on its flying back, the cap exploded, discharging the loaded barrel, lodging its contents in the chest and abdomen of Air. G. Timely assistance was rendered, but not withstanding the most skillful treatment, Mr. G. survived only about twenty hours. Thus has passed away a good citizen one who had distinguished himself in va rious positions of public, and in alt the walks of private life. He has left in a good name a heritage to be shared by a numerous family, of which they may well be proud. Mr. Garmany is a native of Newberry District, S. C. born in le02. He married Miss Margaret McDiH in 1S21, aud soon after removed to Gwinnett county, in this State, where he resided for more than thir ty years, taki-g a leading and active part in whatever affected the welfare of his fel low citizens. . In the earlier years of his residence in Gwinnett, the Indians became troublesome, and finally warlike. As a precautionary measure, the citizens of the country form etl a volunteer, military organization, and unanimously elected .Mr. Ciinnany, Cap tain, which office he held for more than twenty je;u3, and often called into active service until the Indians were finally re moved fiotn Georgia and Alabama In IS55-'C, in response to a call of the Ex ecutive of the State, Captain Garmany brojjht out his Company to meet -the threatened attacks of the Creek Indians upon the white settlements, and even upon Co'umbus, which it was feared the Indi ans woull attempt ro burn. Within a few days after he was mustered into the ser vice, with only a fraction of, his command he fought the sanguinary battle at " Shep herd's Plantation," the details of which are now matter of history. It will be remem bered that the Indians came upon them by surprise, when they were washing their clothes and taking a rest after a fatiguing march. The Indians came upon them in numbers ten to one, making amol murder ous attack. Capt. G. gathered his men and received the enemy in the bravest man ner, and for more than three hours main tained himself in the unequal contest with his savage foe. In this buttle he lost eight men killed, and had a number wounded He also received a severe flesh wound him self. As an evidence of the bravery of his little band they left-fifty Indians dead, and a large number wounded on the field. The Indians were led by the notorious "Jim Henry," one of the most skillful anddaring Warriors of the Creek Nation. Notwith standing the gallantry of Capt. Garmany and his command he would have been fi nally annihilated, but for the timely relief of trie brave Alajv Jermigan. Worn out with fatigue, and having exhausted their supply of ammunition, they would finally have been obliged to yield, but Jermigan, at the head of twenty mounted men came down upon the foe with 6uch dauntless bra very as to carry consternation on every hand, thus enabling the little band to reach the Fort, whilst the savages- retreated a cross the Cbattahocbee to the Alabama side. , In 1831 he volunteered, at the head of more than one hundred men, to put down the threatening hostilities of the Cherokee Indians, but was no: called into active ser vice. In the Senate of the State Mr. G repre sented bis fellow citizens with credit to himself ; and in all the relationships of life was highly esteemed. He removed from Gwinnett only about three years since, and finally settled in Kiuggold. His sudden and melancholy death, will carry 6orrow to a large family, and circle of deeply attached relatives and friends, which will be shared alike by his surviving comrades in arms, and all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. For many years he ndorned a Christian professiarTby a well-ordered life and Godly conversation.lea ving to his surviving friends the eonsolation that he has gone to a bless-' ed reward. ANDREW S. A CERTAIN DISEASE. When the mieguided and imprudent votary of pleasure finds he has imbibed the aced of .hi painful disease, it too often happen that aniil-tim-ed sense of shame, or dread of discovery, deters him from applying to those who, lrom education and respectability, can alone befriend him, delay ing till the constitutional symptoms of this horrid disease make their appearance, such as ulcerated sore throat, diseased nose, noctural pain in the head and liinbo, dimness of sijht, deafness, node on the shin bones and arms, blotches on the head, face and extremities, progressing with frightful ra pidity, till at last the palate of the mouth or the bones of the noso lull in. and the victim of ibia awful disease becomes a horrid object ofconimis scration.till death puts a period to hia dreadful suf ferings, by sending him to that bourne from whence no traveller returna.'' To e uch therefore, Dr. Johnston pledges himself to preserve the most inviolable secrecy ; and, from his extensive prac tice in the first Hospitals of Europe and America, he can confidently recommend a safe and speedy cure to the unfortunate victim of this horrid dis ease. It is a melancholy fact, that thousands fall victims to this dreadful complaint, owing to the un skilfulness ol ijnorant pretenders, who, by the use of that deadly poison, mercury, ruin the constitu tion, and either send the unfortunate sufferer to an untimely grave.or else make the residue of life mis erable.
