0 VOLUME XI NUMBER 45. WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 28, 1856. WHOLE NUMBER 1300 MISCELLANY. r 1 From, the WaierviUe Mail. --COME THIS WAY, FATHER" During a short, visit to the sea-shore of our State, some . two years since, with a party of friends, it was proposed one bright afternoon that we should make up a party and go down the harbor on a fishing ex cursion. We accordingly started, and af ter sailing about three miles, a young la dy of the company declined going farther, and requested us to land her on one of the small islands in the harbor, where she pro posed to stay until our return. My little boy, then about four years old, preferred re maining with her. Accordingly, we left them, and proceeded some six miles farther. We remained out much longer than we in tended, and as night approached a thick fog set in from sea, entirely enshrouding us. Without compass, and not knowing the right direction to steer, we groped our way along for some hours, until finally we distinguished the breaking of the surf on one of the islands, but were at a loss to know which one' of them. I stood up in the stern of the, boat, where I had been steering, and shouted with all my strength. I listened a moment, and heard through the thick fog and above the breaking of the surf, the sweet voice of my boy calling, "Come this way, father! steer i straight far me I'm here waiting for you !" We steered by that sound, and soon my little boy leaped into my arms with joyl saying, "I knew you would hear me, father !" and nestled to sleep on my boeom. The child and the maiden are both sleeping now. They died in two short weeks after the period I refer to,; with hardly an ij interval of time between their deaths. Now tossed on the rough sea of life, without compass or guide, enveloped in the fog, and sur rounded by rocks, I seem to hear the sound of that cherub voice calling from the bright 6hore, "Uome this way, father ! steer straight for me !" When oppressed with sadness, I take my way to our quiet ceme tery ; still, as I stand by one little mound, the same musical voice echoes from thence "Come this way, father! I'm waiting for thee!" . I remember a Toice Which once guided ray way When lost on the sea. Fog-enshrouded I lay ; 'Twas the voice of a child, As he stood on the shore It sounded out clear O'er the daik billow's roar "Come this way, my father!- ! Here safe-on the shore I am waiting :fbr thee !'' I remember that voice 'Midst rocks and through breakers And high dashing spray ; How sweet to my heart Did it soand from the shore, As it echoed out clear O'er the daik; billows' roar "Come this way, my fathei ! Steer straight for me ; Here safe on -the shore I am wailing for thee !" I remember my joy When I bed to my breast The form of that dear one, And soothed it to rest ; For the tones'of my child ."I called you dear father, And knew you would hear The voice of your darling Far o'er the dark sea. While safe on the shore I was waiting for thee!" i " That voice now is hnsh'd Which then guided my way ; The form I t lien press'd Is now mingling with clay ; But the tones of my child Still sound in my ear "I am calling you, father! O, can yon not hear. The voice of your darling As you toss on life's sea 1 Fox on a bright shore I am waiting for thee !" I remember that voice; In many a loue hour I It speaks to my heart With fresh beauty and power, And still echoes far oat Over life's troubled wave, And sounds from lov'd lips J That lie in the grave j "Come this way, father ! O, steer straight for uat ! , - Here safe in Heaven if- I am waiting for thee !" P THE CONVICTION OF DR. PALMER. A trial of very great interest, which has been going; on for some time past in Englaud, was brought to a close on the 27th of May ' by the conviction of the prisoner. Some accounts of the charge and the circumstances connected with it, our readers may have seen of late in the items of foreign intelligence given upon the arrival of the ocean steamers, but the case is so remarkable in many of its aspects, that we think-a fuller statement, such:as we gleaned from the report of the trial in the columns of the London Times, will not be unacceptable- I . : The crime -involved in the legal proceedings to which we refer.was that of murder, committed by administering poison with a stealthy adroitness and a diabolical coolness of purpose that carry our minds back to the imperial atrocities of the borgies. The crimnal, byname William Palmer?, was by education a phy sician, but falling unto evil courses he be came passionately addicted to the Turf, and the Turf in England is the propylon the great vestibule to the temple of Ruin. Few men, not blessed with col ossal fortunes, can stand up long against its vicissitudes of loss and gain without becoming bankrupts in pocket or in character. Stowes and Chatsworths and Blenheims even, have ere this melted a way from the possession of their owners, like a dissolving view, by means of the wondrous magic and phantasmgoria of a betting. book; and Wilham, Palmer, whose means originally were none of of the largest, soon saw the last of his sovereigns pass from him in the perilous precincts of the "Ring." His first re source was usury, and a London Shy- lock for some time administered to his necessities upon forged acceptances, at the mild rate of 60 per annum. This sort of relief could not last lolig aud ter minated, as it always does, with threats of exposure, from which the victim only extricated himself by a resort to murder, His wife's life was'insnred for X 13,000, about 65,000. This handsome sum, Palmer obtained possession of by giving her strychnine and removing her from earthly sorrows to come, But the pecu niary ease, purchased by so dreadful a burden of mental remorse, proved but temporary.and very soon Shytock whose name was Piatt, was down upon him for the redemption of some heavy bills he yet held, and it became necessary to pro cure more money. The use of strychn ine was now familiar to Palmer, and as he had a brother, whose life wasalso in sured for 13,000, he resolved to obtain this sum by the same means he had used so successfully in the case of his wife. The poison was given, the broth er died, Palmer rivalled Brinvilliers in the employment of sedatives, but the scheme failed when the insurance com pany resisted the payment of the poli cy. This was about a year ago. Suspicion was of course aroused against Palmer, but for want of evidence, no bill of jndictment was found in the matter of his brother's .murder. Meanwhile, the demands of Pratt were becoming every day-more clamorous and at last a writ was issued against Pal mer and his mother (whose name he had felaniously used upon the bills negotiated) for 4,000. Just at this time, chance threw in his power an acquaintance of the Turf, named Cooke, who had won a race and had some 2,000 in his pocket. The strychnine was tried on CooKE,he died, and Palmer pocketed the proceeds. But long immunity in the prosecution of crime had rendered Palmer careless in his manipula tions and a sufficient amount of evidence, direct and circumstantial, was brought to gether to convince a British jury of his guilt and he has been condemned to die. Upon reading over the report of the trial, we have been strongly impressed with it as a splendid illustration of the impartial char acter of English justice. The judges who sal up the bench, three men, whose names are already known all over the earth for great legal learning and incorruptible in tegrity Campbell, Alderson and Crejs well have shown by the firmness and impartiality with which they watched over the rights of the prisoner while vindicating the majesty of the law, that however de generate or corrupt may be the Parliament or the Army of England, that great Realm yet boasts a judiciary worthy of the days of Mansfield. Almost every point raised in the trial by the defence was decided in fd vor of the prisoner, and it was only in the summing up of the evidence by Chief Jus tice Campbell, where the prisoner's own acts made the substance of the unfavorable comment, that one was able to discover, the opinion of the Court as to his guilt or in nocence. rPtlersburg Express. ATTEMPTED FRAUD UPON AN OHIO WO MAN. Mrs. Mary Gold of Mansfield, Ohio, ar rived in Jersey City on Monday evening on her way to her husband in California, On stepping out of the ears, at the depot, she was approached by a California ticket sel ler, alias a deeply dyed scoundrel, who in a cool manner, cunningly calculated Jo throw a woman off her guard, asked if "She, too, was bound for California?" Mrs. Gold replied, "Yes" "Well, ma dam," said the rogue, "1 advise you to buy a ticket at once ; I would not stop here a day without securing a berth," and at the same time, to secure confidence, placed in her hands the regular card of the "United States Mail steamers for California." Mrs. Gold replied, she did not. want his advice, &c. He, however presented himself again in New York, and took her child in his arms and carried it to the carriage she had engaged to take her to Sa very s Temperance Hotel, and then mounting the box of the coach, talked in an under tone to the dri ver. Mrs. Gold thinks the coach was driven around several blocks in order to confuseher; and stopped at length at one of the hotels or lodging houses where emi grants, in Greenwich street, were formerly robbed. She was then told that she had arrived at Savery's, and must get out. -Feeling suspicious, sha said the house did not look to her like Savery's ; that there was no sign upon it, and she would not go in until she could see Mr. Savery. The ticket-seller then ran up stairs, and quickly down again, saying '-Mr. Savery is not in, but the landlady is up stairs, and will wait upon you." He then seized the little girl and carried her into the house, Mrs. Gold, after a short delay, followed, but stopping just outside the door, while the raseaL was making hi3 way upstairs. At this junc ture she met a third man, and ' asked him if that was Savery's, HoteL He replied, "No, but you will be treated just as well here as at Savery's." At the same mo ment a woman appeared, and asked her if she did not warit company to California, and then informed her lhaLshe was on her-. way there, and would like her company. Mrs. Gold replied that she "did not, want her company; she wanted to go to Sa very's, and they must take her there. She turned to go out, but found the outside door locked. Being much frightened, she burst into tears, and a moment after, see ing a side door leading into a bar and eating-room, of which the front door was o pen, she rushed that way into the street The rascals inside, finding themselves foil ed, and the child beginning to scream for its mother, were now forced to' open the door. The ticket-seller brought the child out, rudely threw her into the coach, and ordered the driver to go to Savery's. The driver now declared that he did not know any thing of Savery's Hotel jf that was not it ; but on being told by Mrs. Gold to drive her to the residence of Mr. Frederick Cook) No, 2 College place to whom she had a letter from his Ohio banker, he concluded he could find Mr. Savery's, and then drove there without loss of time. Nearly two hours were employed by the two rascals in the attempt to rob her. Com plaint was made by Mr. Cook to the May or. The driver was arrested, and on the affidavit of Mrs. Gold was fined 10, in de fault of which he was sent to prison for ten days. The runner has npt yet been found, but the police are on his track These cases of fraud in the matter of tick ets to California are very numerous. Six other persons appeared at the Mayor's of fice with their complaints, but nothing could he done for them." " THE KANSAS COMMUTE RETURNING. -Buffalo, June 24 Ex-Governor Reed er and Messrs.
