14 VOLUME XICOJUMBER 46. WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 1, 1856. WHOLE NUMBER 1301 4 MISCELLANY. ROMANTIC MARRIAGES. Tbat "truth is stranger than fiction," we have another confirmation in the following singular facts related by the Springfiield (Mass) Argus: There is a bit of romance connected with the marriage of Mr. to Miss , an nounced under the proper head- in this pa per a few daja !ago. The parties have long resided in this city, and are of the highest respectability. Some months ago the lady became considerably attached to the gentleman, and by a perfectly philoso phical, though perhaps somewhat rare coincidence, the gentleman entertained a tender regard for her. Neither breathed to the other the secret of which each was tenderly conscious that happiness was bnly to be found in the society of each oth er. Little thrilling dalliances tender looks lover's smooth tones everything except the words "I love you," that could say it, fell from the lips of each , and yet the word remained unspoken. The gen tleman dreamed a very pleasant dream that a fair lady called him husband ; of rosy children, making him sweetly, purely happy by their; innocent prattle they were his children; they twined their little arms about the neek of the lady of his heart; she was very gentle, they were both very very, happy. "Dearest ,the effort to address the object of his affec tions awakened him from precious slum berings and dreamings. He was wide a wake a3 wide awake as if he had slept till he could sleep no more. He turned uneasy in his bed, to court those pleasant pictures back ; ha ! that was the human -form he touched--human breath upon his -face the moonlight that fell upon that fair face revealed the beloved features of the being who to him was dearer than all else. His bosom heaved, his eyes dilated, and he gazed upon the quiet slumberer in -unutterable, unconscious astonishment. The lips moved a fair hand brushed back the glossy curls from" the high, round, fair brow, her eyes opened wakefully, and the beautiful girl gazed wildly upon the face that bent upon j her with such earnest, Saute astonishment It was it was the idol of his heart occupying the same couch as himself 1 Let us pass -quietly over the explanation of how, allured by heart sympathies, she bad wandered through long corridors, dark passages, to ,the chamber of the man she loved, in a , somnambulic sleep; of the maiden blush that suffused her cheeks on discovering her'trying position ; of the earnest protesta tions of the absence of design ; of the flood of tears which appealed for secrecy. She is happy very happy with a husband of her choice, and the husband is proud of the beau'y and accomplishments and vir tues of his wife. 1 Of the romantic marriages which rre constantly happening in the gay capital of I fa nee the I aris correspondent of the Bos - ton Post, gives this extraordinary speci men : i , - Madame la countess X, a very rich widow living in an aristocratic faubourg went daily into a populous quartiere of the city for the purpose of distributing alms. In order not to attract attention and to pre vent curiosity she was in the habit of leav ing her splendid 'equipage and proceeding modestly in the omnibus. It was thus that upon one occasion she addressed herself to a conductor of one of the vehicles who had attracted her notice by his politeness and attention towards his passengers. She de sired him to reserve for her at a certain hour every day a! place in the carriage on the step of which he pursued his avoca tion. During many months the place was scrupulously preserved to the great con tentment of the lady. And to testify her satisfaction to the young conductor, who, physically, was remarkably prepossessing, she one day abruptly observed to him, -l might easily pass for your mother, for I am beyond my fortieth year ; but if my age does not frighten "you, I offer you iny hand in marriage and my brilliant position !" Notwithstanding his intense astonishment the conductor took off bis cap and at once accepted the offer, refusing by way of gen erous acknowledgment to accept of any compensation for the distance she had al ready ridden. . The marriage was recent ly celebrated. The conductor finds him self a man of 40,000 fr. income and hus band of a buxom person with whom it is his daily delight to .promenade!, on the Champs Elysees in an elegant, caleche drawn by a pair of expensive horses, the en vy and admiration of all who see them. Here' is an account of a marriage cere mony recently performed in San Francis co, under circumstances both romantic and ridiculous: i For the fair hand of a young, beautiful, spirited, and fascinating widow, two gay and dashing young gentleman aspired, but she gave notice to one (Horace) j that she preferred him to the other, (Sylvester) and an evening was assigned for their junion. As the would-be bridegroom, accompanied by a friend (Frank) approached the man sion of the fair one on the evening appoint ed, they heard sounds of music fnd saw dancers flying past the windows Subse quent inquiries revealed to Horace! the mel ancholy fact that he had been victimized, and that Arabella (the widow's name) and Sylvester had been of "one flesh" for over an hour, and that their friends were making themselves merry in 1 honor ; of the event. The disapponted parties then rushed into the house, demolished furniture, - mirrors, crockery ware, chandeliers, &c, knocked the successful suitor down, together with all. his friends who attempted to protect him. Sylvester rose upon his knees and drew a pistoL Frank kicked at the pistol, but missed it, and the next moment the pis tol ball cut off about one-sixteenth of an inch from the tip end of Frank's iose, and also passed through Horace's cravat, and within half an inch of his jugular veia Sylvestsr was at length rendered peaceable by several blows from a cane, and the me lee was terminated by the departure of the various combatants and guests. The lone ly widow, on being asked why she had treated Horace in so treacherous manner, replied that she. had prepared for the mar riage according to agreement, and finding that Horace did not come, she could not resist the desire to be married any how, and therefore she sent for Sylvester. As not a wholly inappropriate addenda to the foregoing romantic and singular tnat- rimoniul incidents, we will subjoin a couple of tight little poems the first, by II. H. Hirst, the distinguished lawyer and poet the second, by S. C. Upham, the witty "Scribe," and editor of the Philadelphia Mercury: LOVE. ' BO A P. We are young We want soap. And both are loving Both need scrubbing; You love me, You soap me, And I love yon ; And I soap yon; Each, each other's Each, each ot bet's Faults reproving Rough hides rubbing; Some in me, You scrub me, And some in you.. And I scrub you ; What is best What is best For us to do 1 For us to do 1 Live and love, Continne loving Yon loving me, I loving you ; Each, each other's " Faults reproving You reproving me ; I you ; This is best For us to do! Live and rub, Continue rubbing You rubbiug me, 1 rubbing you ; Each, each other's Rough hide scrubbing; You a scrubbing mo, I you ; TI.'m is best, For us to do. Perhaps, after devoting so much space to Matrimony and a little to Love and Soap, we ought to give a bit of room to Babies; and we will therefore tack on this brief extract from a leader in the Lcckport Advertiser: One baby in a family is a blessing if the family is small, and the baby is small, and its wants are small. Nothing can e qual the influence of a child upon the rough character of a business man. He loses his individuality entirely, forgets the cares of the week, and lives in an elysiurn of happiness whHe playing with hi3 baby. Babies are an institution of a Christian and humanizing kind. They draw tears, ex cite mirth, lend a balo of Happiness to a house, and make home the centre of man's thoughts the end of a common man's am bition. WESTERN SIDES & SHOULDERS 1 1 HHDS.
