Correspondence of Ike Baltimore Stan," Washington July I. The Mayor's Nomination- Disturbance at the American Meeting and Assault Upon the Mayor and Officers, j My dispatch last night on the Mayor's nominations stated that ML Joseph Cross, commissioner .of the Eastern Section, and Mr. Win. Wise, commissioner of the wes tern section of the canal, were confirmed. The types say "rejected." This is the more unfortunate as no appointments received a inore hearty concurrence than these, f The Mayor sent in the following nominations : For Board of Health 1st ward, Dr. Hag ner, J. B H. Smith ; 2d ward, Dr Stone, L. Cotoman j 2ilward, Dr.! Berry, Joseph ' Bryan ; 4th ward, Dr. Johnston, Jacob Gideon; 5th - ward, Dr. Gardner, John P. Ingle; Steward, Dr. Walsh. John D, Brant; 7th ward, Dr. Morgan, George Maitingly. --For Gaager ind Inspecter Florian Hitz. For Inspector of Flour and Salted Provision. Washi'gton Bruner. From the indications of the first day's sit ting on the appointments it is fair to pre sume we shall have cooler jweather before they are concluded. Mayor Magruder remained on business in his office-tintil after the) assemblage of the great meeting last night, and to a ' friend remarked that, as the chief executive officer of the city, be should be as prompt and energetic in his efforts to check any disorder which might possibly appear from any quarter as if the meeting was in honor of his own party. In his official position he knew no distinction of parties. With how much success this determination was car ried out may be judged from the following account taken from the Evening Star: The mayor was promptly on the ground at the know-nothing meeting on Monday night, as was his duty, to preserve order, and while in the exercise jof this duty he came across a party of boys and boyish men who were gathered on the steps in the vicinity of the speakers stand drinking whisky from a bottle and making a gener al disturbance, being a portion of the same party of Sam's followers whom Mr. Brad ley had occasion to rebuke so pointedly for disturbing the speakers by their maudlin rowdyism. The mayor very properly at tempted to check the disturbance, and while doing so was assaulted by these rowdies, who were encouraged by men standing by, who, too cowardly to incur the odium of the dastardly jsct themselves, urged on these boys and rowdies to attack the mayor. The chaste (rallying cry or 'Gumballs' and 'Chunkers p the meantime was raised, and a large crowd of these gathered round the mayor, striking him whh fists, stones and slungsriot, shouting hurrah for 'Sam' and swearing like so many demons. 1 u I he police officers and rnembers of the auxiliary guard, who endeavored to pene trate the crowd, were resisted by the gang of rowdies. The mayor, while endeavor ing to eeize-nnd carry away a person who had struck him with a stone was disabled momentarily by a stroke from aslung-shot upon the back of the neck. The mayor, accompanied by some of ttje officers, made his way with difficulty towards the guard house, and on Teaching the market was joined by : Captain Mills, whereupon the skulking srung-shot rowdies made way for him to pass. j "A fellow with a fiddle now followed the mayor, scraping away, at the instigation of these brave 'Samites,' whereupon Captain Mills attempted to arrest ihe fiddler, but Was struck on the back of the head with a slung-sbot,- and the prisoner! escaped. The crowd continued to follow the mayor until he entered the Kirk wood House. "The rowdy gang lingered here, shout ing, throwing stones, firing ipistols, &c, for a while and then disperse. The mayor reached hisown residence about midnight. He is at his office to-day in the exercise of his duties, and though somewhat bruised is, we are glad to hear, not1 seriously injur ed, v, "Several officers were bruised and bea ten, among them officers Cooper and Rey nolds. The names of the most prominent actors have been obtained, and others who Were there can be identified as soon as seen again.: All will be reported to the grand jury, without respect of persons, and it is , the sincere wish of all good: citizens that they will be punished to the extent of the law." DEATH OF A MISER Some four, weeks ago there arrived in t this city bjtbe western cars, in the ex treme of destitution, an old lady who gave her name as. Mrs. Catharine Alberty her age she said was 75 years. She was mis erably clad, and was bent by age and want She had been passed over the road, from Salisbury, free of charge, as an act of char ity, and on her arrival here, rented a small back room from a tenant of Mr. John Kane's. She had no visible1 means of pro viding herself with the commonest neces saries of life and had not, she said, a pen ny in the world, f The attention of the neighbors Was soon attracted to her and she became at once the recipient of their sympathy and boun ty. Her health, however, rapidly declin ed, and she was gratuitously - attended by Dr. W. H. McKee, and pecuniary assis ted, also, by him and others;! but on Mon day last, al noon, death ended her suffer ings. . . ) - - : - ,. After her death, in searching among her miserable rags, making arrangements for her interment, a large sum of money and , the evidences of other property to a considerable amount were discovered in an old barrel, in two or three filthy bun dles was found, in gold and silver, the suss of 2,500;al8O, amongst hejr papers, the scrip for 20 shares of stock in the New Al bany railroadletters relative to her plan tation in Kentucky, and a mass of other property both ' curious and j valuable, a small sign-board was also found with the inscription Mrs. Catharine Alberty, In dian Doctress. '. Sho appears, too, to have added the raystery of fortune-telling to her profession, but from her feeble health was unable to follow either. She had told some of her neighbors that she was origin ally from France, wnich country she left when about two years of age; that she had been raised at Lexington, Ky., but that latterly she had been living in Columbia, S. C, and that in this latter place she had recently been robbed of money., to the a mount of 82,400. There .appears to be some truth in this last statement, as a let ter from the sheriff of that District, has been found, informing her of the arrest of the robbers, and of the probility of her re covering the major portion of the stolen money i A letter, apparently from her hus-s band, has also been founds in which he is spoKen of as "Capt. Alberty," but beyond this, no clue is yet obtained lo her relati ves or friends, if any. - Her -n.iFa.irs are not yet all arranged, but they are in the hands of gentlemen who will see -them properly attended to. The deceased appears to have moved in what is termed good socieiy, with, how ever, but few ol the advantages" of educa tion. She died in the midst of strangers in misery and in want denying herself what was needed for- her sustenance pleading poverty in its most abject form but with ample means about her for ren dering herself and others happy and com fortable. An awful picture, . truly, of the withering effects of avarice. N. C. Stan dard. From the Pkila. X. Am. of Wednesday. FRIGHTFUL DISASTER. Great excitement was caused in the southeastern section of the city, last eve ning, by the announcement that a frightful accident, attended with loss of life, had oc curred at the foot of Reed street. The ru mors were found to be but too true, and upon inquiry we learned ihe following particulars : At the foot of Reed street is situated the extensive wharf of Merrick & Son, the well known machinists. It was constructed upon marshy banks, and though substantial in appearance, was always lia ble to give way, owing to the yielding character of the ground. A very heavy shear occupied the extremity of the wharf To this pier a large number of women and children have-been inthe habit of resorting, during the warm summer evenings, to en joy the breeze from the Delaware and view the shipping. . Last evening the crowd was unusually great, and about half past seven o'clock,, when all were in the height of innocent enjoyment, the foundation of the wharf gave way, precipitating a large number of old and young into the river. The scene that ensued baffles description. While seme women and children were flouting in the slream, struggling and shriek in for help, mothers were runniag about, almost frantic, searching for their little ones, so suddenly missed from their side. The boats of the Receiving Ship Union, and others that put off from the shore, sav d a considerable number of the struggling on s from a watery crave ; but it is feared thut.many sunk. Exaggerated repotts of the number of ihe missing were spread up through the town, and it was almost im possible to arrive at any definite idea of the loss. The following are certainly correct : Wm. Mickle loses two childTm, whose bodies were recovered ; one other was sav ed after it had fallen into the river. Ed ward Mc.Mann "loses one child, whose bo dy was recovered. Mr. A.cCarnm was badly injured by a blow from a heavy chain, which struck him in the side. He was conveyed to his residence, in Front street. The sister and child of policeman Short, of the Fourth ward, are missing, and are believed to have perished. Richard Bills, residing in Marion street, between Second and Front, loses one child. William Nichols, two children. Edward McNeill one child. Peter Doyle, hotel keeper, at Second and Prime streets, loses a daughter a young woman. Miss Woodis and one child, residing in .Lancaster street, above Reed, were lost, as were also two children of Mrs. Harrison, residing in the same street. ; Mr. Nicholson, residing in Wheat street, above Reed, loses two children, and a young woman, who had them in charge, also perished. r Mr. Frederick Rementer, residing in Rye street, was badly injured by some of the falling materials of which the wharf was constructed. - Mr. Wilburson, residing in Jarvis street, between Second street and Jefferson avenue, fell into the river at the time of the giving way of the wharf,, and lost a little boy whom he had in charge. Mr. Wilburson was struck on the head and seriously in jured.- f - '.-; . Jacob Dallas and his two sisters fell in io the river, but were saved through the ex ertions of some young men who came to tae rescue. I The boats of the Union receiving ship are reported to have saved twenty-five per sons. Those having them in charge de Serve the greatest honor for their heroic ex ertions.' I A large number of others, besides those named above, are reported to be missing, but the statements cannot be considered re liable at this time. At a late hour last night, the body of a young woman was found, but not recog nized. The search was continued in spite of the darkness, the Shiffler Hos Compa ny lending men and torches for the service. 1 A large crowd continued m the vicinity until a very late hour, and throughout thai section of the city this sad occurrence cre ated a painful excitement.
