Destruction of Fort Denaud by Fin -Battle between Volunteer and Indians. j I Thie following intelligence has been re. ceived by the New York Tribune by -letters from Fort Myers to June 24. It is of considerable importance, as denoting the resolve of the savages to continue hostili ties, notwithstanding the cam pain has been closed, and all the troops withdrawn from the field. By them it also has accounts of the destruction of Fort Deynaud ,(an im--- portant post situated on the Caloosahatchee, abouf- 3S miles above Fort Myers) by fire : "Fort Myers. Saturday, June 21, '56. "Last Friday, the 13th instant. Fort Deynaud was almost destroyed by fire, which caught accidentally, io consequence" of a spark from a.ighird-pipe catching to the palmetto thatchiug on the roofs of the barracks. The fl tones spread rap- idly, and before long, the hospital, barracks, stables, sutler's store and government store houses were burned. All the clothing was destroyed, and the constant popping off of the loaded guns in the quarters pre vented any effort on the part of our men to save much'. Happily no one ' was hurt Louis, the sutler, lost about $2,000 worth of goods. The United States Steamer Ranger, went up yesterday with carpefc ters, provisions, &c , for the sufferers The fire occured in the evening-f t eight o'clock. The soldiers lost much of their hard earned savings, and it is to be hoped that Con gress will remunerate them for their losses So intense was the heat that gold watches and even an iron bedstead were melted down." . : j -. . . ;! j . '. By another letter we have accounts of a severe engagement between a detachment of Florida volunteers and the Seminoles, which resulted in the defeat of the former, not, however, without considerable loss on the part of the Indians. The following is the account : "Fort Myers f Monday evening, -i "June 24, 1356. j M A schooner from Tampa brines the startling intelligence this evening, that the volunteers have hkd a fight with the Indi ans, on the 14th or 15th instant, at Tease Creek, not far frorh the mouth of VVhitren's Creek, there were about twenty five of the volunteers, under Capt. Hooker. They (of the volunteers) were repulsed from a hammock which j they attacked,! with the loss of two killed-Ho well and j Pierce and Hollingsworth dangerously wounded, and a number of others slightly so. At Fort Green John Parker, and a man named Regidecbt, were killed by the savages. j j " Letters to Lieut Benson, at; this post, state that the Indians first attacked a farm house and killed a man, and were pursued by the volunteers until they came to this hammock. Here the Indians made a stand, and commenced taunting the whites with such expressions' as these : " Come out, you cowards; you dare not fight us,' which so irritated them that they dashed in and a fight ensued. They say several Indians were killed perhaps as many as nine. One certainly was, for they brought the corpse of an Indian away With them, and several are said to have fallen into the river. It is alsojsaid that As-sun-wuh, the great orator of the nation, is the one killed, which would beja most happy occurrence, if true, for he is a most determined enemy to peace. I will giveyou fuller particulars by the next mail! This is all I can obtain at present. j . ' j "P. S. On the 13th instant a house about two milea! from Fort Meade was at tacked by Indians, and Wm. Parker, Al derman Carlton and Spott Whitton were killed. There is no further news." i ANECDOTE OF A SLEEP WALKER. During the Revolutionary W ar there was a gentleman of large property re siding in Brooklyn who was addicted to the habit of walking in his sleep, rauic-sirucK at me invasion emy he daily expected that Tl r a J a oi the en his dwell- mg would be ransacked and pillaged. Under the influence of these fears, he rose one night, and taking a strong box which awake he never attempted to lift without assistance, he proceeded down stairs, furnished himself with a lantern and spade, and in a deep wood ed glen about quarter of a mile from his house he buried his treasure, care fully replacing the sods, so as to create no suspicion jot their having heeu moved. This done, pe returned. re-re- dressed, and went to bed. ' Next mor ning he was first to discover! the loss oi the strong-boxi without having the slight es remembrance of what had pnssed Enraged at his loss, he immediately, accused his domestics of robbery, as no traces of violence were perceptible on either the looks or doors of, his house that could induce him to suspect stran gers. Month after month elapsed, and still the mystery was not Solved, and his family began to want ttie necessa ries of life, I without having the means of procuring them. " h At that period of public calamity, no money could be raised on I real estate, and it was at that season of the year when agricultural labor had ceased, which left him no means of earning a support for his family. To augment his misery, his only sou lay confined by a violent fever, without any one of those comforts which his situation de manded. The desparing . father was strongly affected by this melancholy view ot the future j his rest became more frequently broken, and he would often erander from room - to room all night with hurried and unequal steps, as if pursued by an enemy. His wife and daughter, -who were accustomed to these nightly wanderings, never attempted to disturb him unless they were fearful some accident would befall him; in this case it was necessary to employ the most violent means to awake him, upon which he would exhibit so mush fear and distress that th?y usually suffered him to recover from the trance, which was succeeded by drowsiness, after which he would sin.ki.ito a light and natural sleep, which generally continued for several hours. One night as his daughter was watch ing at the couch of her sick brother, sbe heard lier father descend the stairs with a quick stp, and immediately followed him. She pefcived lie had dressed him self and was lighting a lamrm at .the hearth, after which he unbolted the door and looked out ; he then returned to the kitchen and taking the lantero and the spade he left the house. Alarmed at the circumstance which was not usual, though it sometimes occurred as above related, without the knowledge of his family she hastily threw on a cloak and followed him to the wood, trembling ; with apprehension of she knew not what, both for heself and her father. Having gained the place where he had three months since buried, the box, he set down the lantern so as -to reflect strongly upon the spot : he then removed the sods, a.id striking the spade against us lion cover, he laughed wildly ani exclaimed: "Mv tiesure is s:ile, and we shall he happy." Arid shouldering bis heavy burden with the strength-of a Hercules, he slopped not, as before, to replace the sods or the earth, but snatch ing up his lantern put sufd his way di rectly home, to the great joy of his daughter who could scarcely support herself from the fears she had experi enced, which were that he was about to dig his own grave and commit sui cide, or murder some of his defenseless tamiJy. Inexpressible, therefore, was her joy on seeing him asend the stairs aad p!ace the box in the former recess-; after which, as usual, he retired to rest. His wife and daughter, however, were too anxious to sleep themselves ; the one sat impatiently watching the dawn of day, and the other retimied to the apart ment of hrr suffering brother, to relieve his mind by the joyful evpnt and hpr consequent hope of his speedy recovery. When the gentlrmau arose ia the morning, his wife observed the gloom upon his countenance as he asked about the health of his son, and expressed his sorrow at not being able to procure those comforts for his family which were so much needed. Finding him perfectly unconscious of all that had passed the preceding night, she watch ed the effect which the restoration of the box would have upon his mind ; and as she expected, with an astonish ment amounting almost to frenzy he ex-1 ciamimed : "W ho has done this ? Whence came the box T - Not uutil he had listened to his daugh ter could he be convinced of the possi bility of his performing such an act while asleep. Suffice it to say, that now health, peace and competence were once more restored to his dwelling, and the result of this blessing had a salutary effect upon his mind ; and although he still continued his midnight excursions, yet his friends were gratified to find them less frequent than formerly, and his future dreams also, to judge by ap pearances, seemed to partake of the mild, sereno character of his thoughts. " PROSPECTUS OF THE "SOUiflERN SENTINEL," A Democratic and Miscellaneous Journal, to be published weekly, at Wilson,' If.
