About six months ago, says the Chicago Balletin, a well-dressed and gentlemahly " looking individual, arrived in this city upon ; the Cleveland train, anil registered hii name at one of our principal hotels as ft. ' W. -Flemington., After rihaining a couple of days, he settled his billj. and remarking- that business would probably command his at ; tendance ic a neighboring town for h ebon ' period, he left without t king his luggjge. which consisted of a Itrunk and portui ui- The next day, however,- he drove up to tfie private entrance of the hotel, accompa nied by a lady who rje represented as j his wife, and who was as such registered. 'i he female, -who was in the first tender -bloom of womaAbood; was but seldom seen during' their stay at -the hotel, save oy those , whose avocations enabled them to enjoy t this privilege, who pronounced her to be of surpassing beauty. i " j Time passed, and a month had been ad ded to the vortex of the past, when one of -those sinister billet doux, in the shape of . not a bill of fare but a bill for tare, was presented Mr. Flemington. On his; prom tseto settle the matter in a day or two, an other week passed, and ouid vro quo fori boarding, lodging, anil et ceteras was not forthcoming. The landlord became impor tunate, and the guest: finally told him that hewould go to Milwaukee, where he had funds, and return with the means to liqui date the debt. , He took his portmanteau, and after bidding bis beautiful companion an affectionate, though apparently short a dieu, he departed. j, -' ' ( ' The sequel is soon : told ; he never retur ned, and the victim of his treachery soon "found that she was deserted by him i for whom she had sacrificed the most precious ' attributes of woman her honor and fame ; s concealment was no longer possible, and the humiliating admission was confessed, that after a short acquaintance in Cleveland with her sedoeer, shej had forsaken the pro tecting roof of a confiding father, for one who, under promise of marriage, had first ., destroyed her innocence, and then left her to the cold scorn of in uupitying world. 'I No persuasion, however, tould induce her to return to, or even avow, the name of her family She might have suffered from ,4want of food, had not some compassionate . individuals who, discovering- that she was well instructed in- trie art of dressmaking, procured her employment. j Day after day sped past without casting a light on the whereabouts of her seducer, aiulil, at length, the fruit of the fatal error became apparent. She was about to be come a mother, which, blessed and, holy event of woman's existence, was to her fraught with terror and dismay. No anx ious husband would hang with tender so licitude o'er her couch, or bail with pater rial kiss, the advent of the newborn pledge of love. She was alone alone and mad ness took possession j of her soul. ) ' On Sunday night, the inmates of a house on State street, where Fanny Bennett . , for such was the name she had assumed boarded, were alarmed by the smell of fire, and on hastening to the third floor, they found that it proceeded from ber room Bursting open the door, a dense smoke was observed to fill the interior, arising f.om quantity of wearingj apparel which was slowly mouldering, having been igrnited from a charcoal furnace, the embers of .wfeich were glowing and -emitting their deadly vapor. Stretched upon the bed lay the forsaken girl insensible, and in a short time longer her broken heart would have ceased to throb with! shame and anguish. Medical aid was immediately procured, end ere long she was pronounced out of danger. Since which she has exhibited a less despairing turn' of mind. Poor girl ! she has most bitterly atoned for ber one sol itary aggression. JWhat shall we say of bim treble murderer ! the slayer of inno cence the murderer of bis confiding vic tim 'and bis own offspring t Where is ret ributive justice, that; such a villain remains unpunished. " I '' : ; COURTING-BY PROXY. ! ; Love making, 011 one's own account, must be delightful the transition ' state, it is presumed between an actual earth and contemplated elysium ; that is, as far as presvimtion dares assert. , It may be . more of one and less of the other I dare - not be certain, but' either way, it most . certainly must be delighted.' : Years ago, and it shames, my modes ty to say it, I fanqied I too, in common with Eve's daughters, possessed a lover. One all my own., Shall I tell you why : and how I thus appropriated him ? ;'. I had the "Sorrows of Werter," and more had experienced a double por tion of my own sorrows, had sympathi zed with "Dorcasana" until my excited " brains conjured lovers in country bump kinsand beard music in the school , boy's corn-stalk fiddles.; . I , had tried ' -'tricks, and dreamed dreams. No won der then, is it, that one so prepared, should have esteemed a lover as any thing less than a mircle ? . My first tangible impression of my good fortune was jthrough the Post offi ce; Ah hhow I blessed the inventer of Post offics. My epistle was sealed with ' a love of a motto," and addressed with r a-profusion of flourishes. The super acription was unmistakable. All right without, how could I dream that it was otherwise within :- v; i My foolish heart twittered a trifi, as my eye devoirred the fervent protest3 tion pf ome smitten -swairyand pridfi 'was flattered ; for1 the Criter dared not (only think of it ?) tell his nanus "until 1 certain his " snrt was not rejected. I : wore that billet ok my heart for days, (and, if yoifll believe the spot it cover ed is warm still with something of the same emotion that imparted caloric in that sunoy hour,) and longed ibr another of those same blissful confessions. . I noed not say ho w anxiously f wailed from day to day for another similar mis sive, came- and another. Romance fed the flame,1 and curiosity fanned it to a perfect blaze. Watching the moon, (by nights, of course,) and wandering io shdy groves and by murmuring ril!., became favorite oc'cupjlioi is. Poetry, too, was vouch s::fd to me, and had I but suffered, a relapse, no doubt J should have det-rnol uyself a poet born. Inditing loye s muets be'.atne- a pas tfine, and '-gi Jn itke a furnace" the only,re!it;t my pout up si)irit'exp'rietiC ed, in trying to cast off a pot lion of its burden of ii;ippitit Perfumed paper vanished from my portfolio, and blue ribbon rose, market value. . Ahf those" were sunny days, over which memory throws a halo, over spread now and then with a cloud, yet never quite able to hide the halo's bright ness ; and those blissful dreams, how much they remind me of , but I an ticipate. ; My lover preserved his incog., while I grew more furious in my "eternal devotion." Could I but see the hero of my dreams, the author of my billet doux, the idol of my heart; could I but' whis per his loved name to the winds aud be certain they would bear it to his ears-r-but no ! his' bashfulness could not Jbe overcoma and poor I was doomed to wait many days, if not weeks with but a suspicion of who was my true knight. Every gent, who had the good man ners to blush in my presence, became Orlando for the time, and the focus, in which, my affections concentrated. I sought by sentimental sighs, end soft words designed for theii ears alone, to draw out the secret, and rove myself too disinterested and generous to treat their love unkindly. . But, alas ! : Love's labor seemd lost" for the season. Hope deferred made the heart sick, and wan, pale, from mid night watching and lack of food, I became a fine fancy sketch for Hamlet's Ghost. My mother prepared herbs for her pining child, but with no avail, for herbs have no heahng power for the spirit's ailment. I could not make her my confident how could I? It seemed so vulgar to bare ray treasured secret to the eyes of common mortals. So alone 1 sighed in secret and pined openly. Esculapius was appealed to in vain auother god understood ray casa better the shafts of Cupid had pierced my heart,' and were rankling there. Thy needed the soft hand of the unknown tc pluck them thence, and why Oh, why should he avoid nie ? At length, the day of trial - and hope came. The secret was I o be revealed By appointment we were to meet, and 1 was to prove my sincerity by an elope ment. My dear old home the mother that nursed ujp and the father who had night ly blesvsed me, were to be forsaken.' So complete was my infatuation that these scarce cost me a sigh. Never was crjature so supremely blfst. .The g;QVt whfff I had. wan dered so frequently was designated, as the place of meeting and the hour was the very one I had consecrated to star gazing. With a fluttering heart but un faltering step, I neaied the rendezvous. A stately form cast its noble shadow in th silver stream. My breath camu heavily. One moment more, and I should cast myself into the ams of him who, not having seen, 1 had long since learned , to love. We met one look was enough 1 recognized a reject ed suitor, and he an old flame. , The Captain for it was, after all. only Captain Smith bowed blushed and apologized. It was not me he expected, but another lady : my cousin, with whom he had tor some time cor responded. By some confusion of ideas, he had invariably addressed his notes to me ; not dreaming that there was but the difference of a single letter " in ouj cognomens. Of course my love experi enced a. chill. We pledged ourselves to secrecy, kept the letters, and cousin Fanny, some -time, afterward, took the Captain..- CIRCULAR SAWS. THOSKfe'AWS Stamped J. M.
