From Harpers' Magazine Jar August. ROMANCE OF REAL LIFE. I - A Senator's Klrst lore He Xewr got O- ver It. --)! Some years ago a member of the United Stales Senate, distinguished not only for tois talentrbut his fine personal appearance, ' 'was seated in a richly furnished parlor in he city of Washington, engaged in a live ly conversation with one of the most amia ble and accomplished married ladies that ever honored our national capital with their presence. Vrhe subject was the common nl mostragreeable one of marriage anJ the lady, 5ith a beautiful enthusiasm na tural to her character, was pressing upon the notice of her dfstirguished bachelor friend the claims of a young female friend, whose posjaon in , society, amiable disposi- "tion, and liberal ' education, eminently ren iifcred her fit to be the wife ot a Histingnisb--ed statesman, who had seemingly already spent too many years without a proper companion: to divide bis honors and bear with him the ills of life. j. The gentleman, who had for a longtime entered with a hearty good will into the half serious ond half playful conversation, suddenly beeaine excited and remarked that he ou!d, on such a subject bear all . that was 6aid in jest, but when serious art guments were brought to urge him to change his condition, then his reply must be that such a thing could never be that to love he could not, for his affections were in the grave. The lady was struck with the Senator's manner and surprised that throughout, her long acquaintance with him she had never -suspected that he had found time, amidst the struggles of a laborious profession and a. high political position, to ,;fall in love." With the blandishments only known to the sex, and with a curiosity prompted by the kindest of hearts, she asked for an ex planation of this seeming mj-stery, and the gentleman, for the moment overcome by the eloquence of his interlocutor, explained -as follows: It was nay good fortune, soon after I en tered upoTJ the active duties of my profes sion to engage the affections of a lovely girl, alike graeed with beauty of person and hih social position. Her mother, her on ly living parent, was ambitious ;'and, in the fashion, opposed the union, of her child with one who had only his talents and the future to give in return for so much beauty ind wealth. The young lady, however, was more disinterested ; mutual vows of at tachment were, exchanged, a correspon dence and frequent personal interviews suc ceeded, and the future seemed to promise a most happy consummation of all our wishes. At that time 1 had just commenc ed, under favorable circumstances, my pro fession rjn my native town ; and, making some character, wes finally engaged as counsel in a suit of importance before one of th burts hoi len in the city of Phila delphia. The opportunity was favorable to make an impression, if I possessed the ability to do so; and I gladly accepted the position, and bent my whole energies to accomplish my ambition. Arranging to write frequently to one who divided my heart with my business duties, and to re ceive frequent epistles in return, I set out for Phifadelphia, expecting to be absent at most net more than two weeks. The law's delajs. however, detained me a month be yond ie nnticipated time; and, although I succeeded beyond my most sanguine ex pectation, and established myself in a posi tion before the highest court of my native State, my triumphs Were dashed thatin all the tirrTe thus engaged I had not received a linefrom Lancaster, instead of which the atmosphere was filled with rumors that the person upon whom I had set my affec tions had been seduced into the ambitious designs of her thoughtless parent, and that I had been dhcar !ed a thing I could not believe and yet the dreadful siience seem vfid to indorse." At last, released from my engagement, f took the usual, and, in those days, the only conveyance to Lancaster the stage. The idleness consequent upon traveling gave time for consuming thoughts, and my suspense became paitiful to the last degree and, unable to bear the slow pace of my conveyance, I determined to anticipate the usual lime of my journey by makingjhe fast miles upon horseback. In carrying out this determination, 1 mounted a fleet steed ;Tjut just as 1 reached the suburbs of my native place, tho animal, from some un accountable cause, sprang from the road, threw me with force, breaking my arm and . vioerwise injuring my person. i-icKea up by my friends, I was conveyed, helpless and full of physical and mental agony, to ony home. Scarcely had the surgeons per formed their necessary duties, than one whom I esteemed a friend, announced to cne the gossip of the village, and, among other things, detailed the particulars of the courtship and engagement of the young lady in whom I was so interested with a well known person of & neighboring ; city a person whose claims to regard no one could dispute. These things, stated with such apparent good faith, connected with (hat fearful silence of six long weeks, had no other effect than to increase ray anxie ty to unravel the raystery ; and, on the fol lowing morning, concealing my wounded lin-b under a clout, prjbnbly pale and hag. gard, I presented myself at the mansion of my mistress I was received in the pres ence of the mother. She Mtnfirmd mv suspicions. The young lady stood by, the J :v - jrev wieai as toe grave. ( Oesperate at, what seemed this bad fattb, I ' returned to my house, wrote a hasty lettr demanding my correspondence, and return ing, at the arne time, every once cherish ed token of affection. I received all I sent for, save, perhaps, some forgotten flower. That night the young lady, accompanied by a female servant, left for Philadelphia. Arriving at her uncle's.: house, she com plained of being fatigwed with her journey, ' and retired to her room. Complaining of some werious pain, only soothed by narcot ics, 6he sent her faithful but unsuspecting servant end friend to a neighboring drue store for laudanum, received it, expressed the wish to be alone, and seemingly retir-. ed to sleep. The following morning, not making her appearance, the family became alarmed broke open the door, and found the young lady dead in her band the lit tle keepsake retained from my, correspon dence. The uncle, as if comprehending the particulars" which led to this dreadful tragedy, had the body encoffined, and with it' re turned to Lancaster. Placing all that remained of this once lovely being- in the parlor, he brought the mother forward, and displayed what he was pleased to term the result of her work. I was sent for, and arrived to witness the eloquent agony of that mother's heart. Over the cold remains of the daughter, she revealed the particulars that led to the aw ful result. My letters and hers, by untir ing industry, the command of large re sources, .and paid agents, bad, beepL uf Intercepted- The reason of my .-prolonged absence in Philadelphia' had been explain ed as the result of the fascinating charms of city belles; even an engagement had been pronounced. All this while tbevte tim had been full of hope. She had heard of my arrival in Lancaster, but not of my accident ; for long' weary hours she sat in the parlor waiting my presence, but doom ed to disappointment. Here was seeming indifference a confirmation of all that she had heard. On the other side, I was made the dupe of the mother's arts, and the fiend who had poisoned my car was merely the agent to carry forward the great wrong. The last interview 1 have described, wnicb resulted in the return of correspondence, was enshrouded in the consequences of all these plans. Tne result was death to one party, and the. burial of the heart of the other in the same grave that closed over one who could not survive the wreck of her affections. Many years have passed away since the incidents detailed in the above sketch transpired ; many years since they were revived by the accidental conversation in a family circle of Washirgton society ; but the country strangely becomes interested in the event, from the fact that the "White House" may possibly have a bachelor for its occupant; but one not so because of in difference to woman, but really from the highest appreciation of one of the loveliesjt of her sex. HORRIBLE MURDER. A few days since, a Mr. Johnson discov ered in the woods, some distance below this city, the dead body of a female, horri bly mutilated. Her head and fore arm were cut off, and lay a short distance from the body. Her skull was terribly mashed An inquest was held upon her remains nnd the jury, in their verdict, declared that she was murdered. It is evident, from the dress, &c , of the deceased, that she was a girl known by the fictitious name of-4 Em ma Smith," who has been for several months an inmate of different houses of ill fame ia this city. Her real name was Elda Elmira Price. (She had heen married ) Her maiden name was Christian. We learn that jhree weeks ago yesterday a stranger called at the house where she lived, and invited her to ride with him in a chaise, telling her to dress up in " her best." and to put on all her jewelry. She accept ed the invitation and dressed as desired, displaying her jewelry to the best advant age. In the evening the man returned to his hotel alone, sending the horse and chaise to the livery stable at which they were owned. The same night, at about eleven o'clock, he informed two police officers that a girl had robbed him of $600, and offered them $100 if they -would arrest her. --Incit ed by the re ward, they made diligent search, Out witnout avail. 1 he next morning, the stranger, on pretence of seeking for the girl, left the city, and has not been seen since. It is supposed that he murdered the girl for her jewelry, as none of it was lound upon her person. She was in feeble health, and is said to have been one of the best be haved of the class of unfortunates to which she belonged. She was about twenty years of age. The affair created much excite ment in our city yesterday, and a number of truthless stories were current. A para mour of the girl was arrested, but no evi dence could be adduced to implicate him in the affair; on the contrary he was pro vided with sufficient evidence to place hiin- seit beyond suspicion. Detroit Free Frets, 22d. LAST WORDS OF BTLLT MULLIGAN. The last words of Billy Mulligan, when about to bid adieu to California forever being banished by the Vigilauce Commit tee were as follows : "I know that my punishment is just and merited ; I deserve it and more too. . I have no fault to find with the Committee ; they are all respectable gentlemen, and are act ing right, and they ought not to stop with what they have done There are a hun dred others just as bad as I am, and de serve the same treatment. There is not an officer in the city or county of San Francis co who is legally elected. They are all thieves, from the Mayor down, and should be driven from their offices. I shall hope to hear th u they have all been made to resign." It is a great piy thai the Vigil ance Committee placed it in the power of such precious scoundrels to return to the Eastern States. ; They should have been sent to her Majesty's dominions in Austra lia, . in acknowledgement of the equivocal compliment paid California by her officers in me pioneer days.
