THE PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST. -muiuM every aay we near tne le- mark made that the south ousrht to ti- nite on either Buchanan or Fillmore, or ramcr tne one who is aptest to defeat Fremont. There can be no doubt that the issue involved in the Presidential electiou is a contest on the oue hand, to uphold and sustain the Constitution of the Unit d States, the equal rights of the States, and the honor rf the Union, on the other to overthrow, dishonor atid destroy the south by federal legislation; in other words the contest is whether the mad fanatical abolitionists of the north shall break in sunder the Ameri can Union by the election of Fremont to the Presidency, or whether the Union shall be preserved by the election of a national Union man. If either Buchanan or Fillmore shall be elected by the people at the ballot box, their bitterest opponents at the south willfeel disposed cheerfullv toaminV in his election, because southern rights and southern honor will be safe in the nanas oi either, and because the elect ion of either will not be a sectional vie tory lor neither is a sectional, but national.candidate supported bv warm e- i i . . . irienus ootn at tile north and at th south Now we honestly believe that in No vember next, the south will act blindlv .-, j i. i , .j aiiu ui-iuiy, iimess sne casts a unanim ous vote lor that candidate for President wno svi receive the strongest northern support we feel confident that the ot the south will be a unit. l ne enemies ot the south and the Uonsfitution at the north will all vote for Fremont their aim a nrl nnrnnoa are to elect him bv a sectional vot. We have answered that question in the history we gave of the ivnow Nothing or American Dartv That was our object iu writing it. We wished to show our readers bv m-esen-. ing facts that the new party never had any respectable strength in -the southern States, and that at th north after the June Convention 1855, of the American party, was held, the great majority of it deserted to the camp of the black re- We fee! confident That the Fillmore Know Nothings in the north, with all the aid they can possibly receive from the old Whig party, and aU ther sour ces, wm not be ane ta cattry twelve electoral votes we. do not honestly be lieve that Mr. Fillmore will carry a single northern State. The idea that Mr, Fillmore rati pos sibly be elected; by . the people at the ballot box, President of the United States,'is the most absurd and prepos terous one we hare ever heard suggest- ed since we knew any thing of public j anairs. , We have no warfare to make on Mr. Fillmore or his supporters. We are op posed to the principles of, the American party strongly, deeply fixedlybut we ao not regard them as , as much importance as the Union, and knowing Mr. Fillmore to have identified himself with all the flummery and tom-foolery of Know Nothingism in its early histo ry and which so far from recanting he proudly or foolishly boasts oC yet we would cast our vote tor him did we re gard the contest between him and Fre mont. , But the truth is, and it will soon be so apparent that it will recruire either a hard fac or a verdant credulity to deny it-Fir more has no possible cpc the north, and at the south Know Noth- ingism is being raprdly swept out of ex istence. It will soon be known only a a historical political meteor, whose light was never brilliant but ever obscured, half-concealed, and darkened; and of it the voice of the people will be re- quiescat tn pace. ASIATIC MYSTERIES. The Amsterdam Courant contains the following: , It is well known that the East Indi ans have many inventions unknown vto Europeans, and that they possess se crets incomprehensible to us. The Chi nese understood the art of printing sev eral centuries before western nations, aud they also used gunpowder before it was known in burope. In Uongal the art of strpptit charming strikes foreigners with astonishment. In Chili the Span iards instituted a system of rapid cor respondence by means of the human voice, which at that period went ahead of every other mode of communication. In the kingdom of Montezuma videites were established at stated distances, who transmitted the orders of government, and forwarded information with the ut most rapidity from one end of the king- uoin to ine omcr. It is a recognized fact iu British Ind: ia that, in 1815, the governor of Bengal received notice of a sudden revolt of the tribes of the interior. His informants proved that Ue natives had obtained in formation of the allies having lost the first day of Waterloo, (Quatre Bras. The rebels also knew, a short time sub sequently, that the battle (Waterloo) had been gained by the British and their allies. Three weeks later the eovemor received offici.il notice of this evnt which news had been immediately ex pedited to him by the Duke of Welling ton, by means of couriers dispatched from the "battle-field. A similar circumstances has just ta ken place. Letters received lately from Calcutta, announce that the European mail is awaited with much anxiety, as the people of the interior have already received the anticipated news of the conclusion of peace.
