COLPORTAGE IN NORTH CAROLINA. ' Another quarter of pleasant toil in the high ways and hedges of Gold's Vine yard, has just closed ; and although- hin dered by family affliction,' I have jbeen -able to visit 438 families : 26 of whom neglected preaching 50 destitute of ail religious books except the Bible, and .fouud 10 who, never owned the Scrip tures ; 47 never had a religious visit or prayer arouud their; firesides before, 'Also, addressed 16 public or prayer meetings, and helped to organize sever ed new Sabbath Schools in this county, which make 17" schools of this kind besides those of Raleigh, in whi n are more than 1200 children, fathers and mother some 40 years old who are learning to spell and read ; and many of them are becoming serious about re ligion, some anxious for salvation, and one young man, who is now a Sabbath School teacher, has been happily icon verted from reading f'Anxious Inquirer,' which I gave him some time ago. i In one day 1 visited eight families, five ot whom had; not been to church in.two years, and had no religious books at all. There were several grown chil dren among them who had never enjoy ed scarcely any of the advantages oi re ligion or education, and stemed almost entirely indifferent ; to them, their; fa thers being drunkards and reckless to every thing of the kind. After spend ing much time in their humble cabins, talking kindly to each one, and interes ting them in books- by explaining the pictures of Cain killing Abel, Christ :hanging on the Cross, tfcc, they all con sented to go to Sunday School, which 1 soon formed of more than 50 scholars, with faithful teachers,; where such had never existed before. At one of these Sabbath Schools, in a dark region, there has been a gracious revival recently, .and the minister reports 13 couverts, tnost ot whom are connected with the school. ! WM.i. W. CROWDER, - Ag'tAm. Tract Sa for N. C. Raleigh, Sept. 1st, 1856. : ' , , - f THE GUNNER'S SHOT. . i .... i.':---. 1 TBlILLIKa arm . Our noble ship laj ik uichor in the bay of Tangier, a fortified, town in the -extreme (north w cat of Africa. Tb day ben -extremeljr mild, with a gentle breeze swep. in , to , the northward . and westward, bat -towards the close of the afternoon ' the tea ibreeza-died away, and one of those saliiry, oven-lik , aunosphario 1 brentbings came (from the great sun-burnt Sahara. Half an Hour, beoce joAdown She captain gave the order to the boatswain to cll the hnnds to go in 8wimrxjing,'and in less than five min utes the forms of our tars were sen lenp. ing from the gangways, the ports, ihe neu tinirs, bowsprit, and some ot (be more ven turesome took their leap from the arms of the lower yard. One of the studding-sails had been lowered into the water, with its corners suspended from lha main yard arm and swinging boom, and in this the swim mers made their way. . Among those who seemed to be enjoy ing the sport most heartily were two of the boj's, Tim Wallace and Fred. Fairbanks, the latter of whom was the son of our old gunner, and in a laughing mood they start ed out from the scudding sail on a race There was a loud riBgmg shout of joy on i her lips as they put off, and they started through the water like fishes. The surface of the sea was as smooth as glass, though its bosom rose in long and heavy swells that set in from the Atlantic The vessel was moored, with a long sweep from both cables, and the buoy on the starboard an chor was far away on the starboard quar ter, where it rose and tell with the swells like a drunken man. Toward the buoy the lads made their way, Fred. Fairbanks taking the lead, when they were within twenty or thirty fathoms of the buoy, Tim shot ahead and promised to win the race. The old gunner watched the progress of his son with a vast deal of pride, and whon he saw him drop behind, he leaped upon the poop, and was on the point of urging him on when a cry reached him that made him start as if he had been struck by a cannon ball. "A shark I a shark 1" came from the captain of the fore-castle, and at the sound of the terrible words the men who were in the water leaned and plunged toward the ship. Right abeam, at the distance of t'iree cr Tour cables' length, a shark wake was seen in the water, where the back of the mon ster was visible. His course was for the boys. For a moment the gunner stood like one bereft of sense, but on the next he shouted at the lop of his voice for the boys to turn, but the little fellows heard him not. Stoutly the two swimmers strove for the goal, all unconscious of the fearful death spirit that hovered so near them. Their merry laugh still rang out over the waters, ami at length they both touched the buoy together. Oh ! what drops of agony started from the brow of our old gunner. A boat had put off, but Fairbanks knew that it could not reach them in so; son, and every mo ment he expected to see the monster sink from sight, and then he knew that ail hope would be gone. At that moment a cry reached ihe ship that went through every heart like a stream of fire the boys had discovered their enemy ! The cry started old Fairbanks to his senses, and quicker than thought he sprang to the quarter deck. The guns were all loaded and shotted fore and aft, and none knew their temper better than he With a steady hand, made strong by sudden hope, the old gunner seized a priming.wire and picked the cartridge of one of the guns then be took from his pocket a percussion wafer, and set it in its' place, and set back the hammer of the patent lock. With a steady, giant strength, the old man swayed the breach of his heavy gun to its bearing, and then, seizing the string lock, he stoou back and watched for the next swell that would bring the shark in range. He had aimed the piece some distance of his mark, but yet a single moment would settle his hopes and fears. Every breath was hushed, and every heart in that old ship beat painfully. The boat was yet some distance from the boys, while the horrible sea monster was fearful ly near. Suddenly the air was awoke by the roar of a heavy gun, and as the old man knew his shot was gone, he sank back on the combing of the hatch, and covered his face with his hands as if afraid to see the result of his efforts, for if he bad failed he knew his boy was lose For a moment after the report of the gun bad died away upon the air, there was a dead silence, but as the smoke arose from the surface of the water, there was at first a low murmur breaking from the. lips of the men; that murmur grew louder and stronger, until it swelled to a joyous, deaf ening 8ho :t. The old gunner sprang to bis ieet and gazed out upon the water, and I the .first thing that met his view was the ! huge.CirfCH6s.af the shark, floating with its belKy up, a mangled mass. In a few monuments the boat reached the daring swimmers, and half dead with fright they were brought on board. The old man clasped his boy in his arms, and then, overcame hy the powerful excitement, ; he leaned upon the gun for. support. I have seen men in all the phases of excite ment and suspense, but never have I seen three hundred human beings more over come by thrilling emotions than on that eventful moment when they-first knew of the effect of the gunner s shot.
