WHOLE NUMBER 225 i A IE I I 1 1 I I MISCELLANY. JC5 At a matter of justice to Mf. Dbhh, we publish the following account from him of the difficulty between himself' and Mr. Robinson : ' j ( Editors op Standard: Notice having been taken in the papers of a difficulty be tween Wm Robinson, Editor of the Tri bune, and myself, calculated to place me in a wrong position before the public, you will do me the kindness to publish this tatement of facts. " 4 In the month of June last, Mr. Robinson maliciously attacked me, personally, in his paper, and endorsed a charge against me of incompetency for the post of Director of the N. C. Railroad, and stated that Gov ernor Bragg should have removed me. This the Governor did not do ; but shortly thereafter re-appointed me. j The Editor of the Sentinel replied to and effectually re pelled his charges. Mr. Robinson .then published consecutively, several other ar ticles reflecting on me, of which I took no notice, until i became a candidate for the Legislature, when i spoke! of his attacks before the people of Wayne, and defended I myseli against-tnem. uuring tne canvass tie made no other publications, but as soon as the election was over, he again com menced his attacks, grossly and malicious ly reflecting on my private and public character, and published a private letter written by me to him in 1850. I was ad vised by my friends not to! notice his arti cles, and determined nqf to do so. A friend, However, published i an anonymous communication in the Sentinel, censuring "his malignant attacks, ancT his publication of the private letter. j In the next issue of his paper, of the 23 in Jay o4ugut, Mr. Robinson, without in xpjiry of me, falsely charged me with being the author, or one of thej authors, of the ' communication to the Sentinel, taking oc casion to pronounce me a i'-liar," "miscre ant," "ass," "infamous man," "regardless of veracity or honor," "malignant creature," guilty "pt "unblushing, unmitigated false hood," meanness and vileness, "skulking about in the dark," and spying, '-hereafter 'let him hope for no quarters," and "let him slide for the present," end: making use of many ; other libelous and slanderous epi ihets and charges, grossly assailing my character as an honorable man. ! I consider it the highest duty of every individual, and more especially of every hu&band and father, to defend his charac ter against such malicious, false, and slan derous publications.- ! Mr. Robinson, it is well known, docs not hold himself responsible, according to the code of honor, for what he may say or publish. j When I read . the above article, ! ; felt greatly provoked at his unceasing attempts to persecute me, and determined that 1 would not tolerate his conduct longer, and would cane him. I had no puipose (hen of shooting him, but was afterwards in formed that he went armed with a revol ver for me. On Saturday afternoon I -walked down to "Mrs. Gris wold's hotel J and being in company with several persons, one of whom had a gun, (having just return ed from hunting squirrels,) I inquired what kind of shot it was charged with, and was informed it was with small shot. I had not seen Mr. Robinson since his libellous at tack, ajid at the moment determined, as he .went armed for me. so that I coufd not get near enough to cane him without being Jikely to be killed, that I would shoot him, with the view of chastizing, and not: kill ing him, and took the gun from the bands, of the owner, without telling him my ob ject. Terysoon Mr. Robinson crossed the street, hut 1 could not shoot him without the risk of hitting persons beyond hurl, un til too near to shcot without endangering his life cr maiming him. I In a short time, I saw htm again, about twenty-five yards off, with his left side towards me, and im mediately fired, lodging the contents of the pun in-his left leg, thigh, butt, and arm, several shot taking effect in his back ob liquely. '"--.--. j ' I The affair occurred in! view of a number of persons, in the most public part of the Papers which have noticed the difficulty, will,jn justice to me, give this an insertion. WM.iT. DORTCH. GaMsboro', Sept. I2th? 1856. nn to "Yjoung man, do you believe in a fu ture state?" . ,' - - "In course I does and what's more 'I intend to enter it as soon as lietsy gets her things ready." f M 41 You mistake me; do you believe iti a future state of reward and punish ment?" - 'JSIost assuredly; if I could cut mugs with a red haired woman I should ex peetmy hat indented by the first broom sstiefe foe could lay her hands n.f "Goto, young man you are incorrigi ble.? Goto." 1, j - "Go two ? It it wasn't for the law :agaitf bigamy, whip me if I wouldn't ;go ajlozen.. But who supposed, deacon, that "a man of your years would gxve. such advice to a man just starting in lite." . " j ; J This took the deacon down - TYPE SBTING Type setting in earlv times was not remarkable for its exactness and! accu racy. ; In the year j 1561 a book was printed, called A natomy of the! Mass. It had only172 pages in it, but thi auth .or a. pious monk j was obliged to add fifteen pages to correct the blunders. These be attributes to thepeeial insti gation of the "devils to defeat the; work; .and hence may hare come the tue of ahe title thePrinter's Devil." i A printer's wife in Germany lost her Jife by feloniously; meddling with the tvpes. She went ! into the office by mgnr.-ana iook out, tne worn . iuru, m Genesis iii, 14, where Eve is made subject to her husband, .aud made the verse read "he shall be thy tool," instead of 'he shall be thy lord." It is said that she was put to death for her wickedness. It is well known that printers of an ear ly edition of the Scriptures were so hea vily fined as to be utterly ruined, lor leaving out the word "not" trom one ot the Ten Commandments. There is an edition called the "Vinegar Bible," from the parable of the "Viueyard" being printed "vinegar." ":'. SUPPORT YOUR OWN PAPERS ! A NEW SOUTHERN LITERARY JOURNAL.
