Tbe largest Democratic meeting ever held in New York! City came off on .Wednesday night week. Over twelvehun- dred merchants and leading men of the for it, and it is eati- City joined in the cal mated that from rift o seventy-five thous- and person were out. on the occasion The Democracy, the bone and sinew, were there by actes. Speeches were made by Mr. Hunter, of Va., Mr. Preston, of Ky., Mr. Church well, of Term., Mr. Toiicey, of Conn., and others. The greatest enthusi ctsm prevailed. The following resolutions Were adopted : ' i j u Resolved, That the thirty-five electoral Votes of the Umpire Stale of - right belong to, and ought to be, and must be cast lor the candidates of the National Democratic party for President and Vir.e President of the United States, James Buchanan and John (7. Breckinridge; and that we hearti- t ly congratulate the - Democracy upon that perfect union in our ranks and entire con olidation of our organization, which ena ble us to look lorwara with confidence to such a result, thereby! insuring the success of our noble cause, the ascendency of Dem ocratic principles, and the undisturbed en joyment and perpetuation of ail the rights of all the States, and of all th :ir citizens. Revived, That the River and j Ocean Counties of the State; of New York, ever deeply imbued with patriotic sentiments, and embracing the soil consecrated by the blood freely shed by our fathers in the Revolutionary struggle, are sincerely at tached to the Constitution and to the U- nion of the Slates; that in the great nation al crisis through : which we are passing, new proofs of their fidelity to the great principle of Nationality shall not be want ing; and that we pledge to our brethren of the interior a clear majority for the De mocratic State and Electoral tickets, up to the boundaries of the tidewater counties, and invite them to meet us there with a similar majority. ; j j Resolved, That the causa of the Demo cratic party is, at this crisis, emphatically the cause of the American Union ; that its platform of principles! is broad, generous, anti sectional and unproscriptive, possess ing identical and unchangable features at the North, the South, the East and the Wes't; and that in'the present contest, that . party can claim to have truly maintained its claims to popular approval and support, by its cfefense of the j doctrine ol popular sovereignty, and of the rights of peaceable and lawful settlers in the Territories, and its vindication of the! loyalty of adopted citizens of whatever birthplace or religion, end its devotion to the; liberal provisions of the Constitution, nod to the preservation of the Union. ! j Resolved, That the so-called and mis called "Republican" party, by its alliance , in one disgusting array of all the fanati cisms and uhraisms of the times by its open warfare upon one: half of the Union, and its misrepresentation of the feelings,, objects and prindiples 61 our fellow-citizens of the South and West; by its exaggerated and wicked romances its pretended wars and invented campaigns in "bleeding Kan sas" by its enlistment of a motley staff of clerical demagogues beating '-the drum eclesiastic, and "devoting their time until the election, in instructing their parishion ers as to which political party is upon the Lord's side" offers art unparalleled spee taele for contemplation! and demands a de cisive rebuke at the hands of an insulted anfl indignant community; that in sublime contrast to the mummeries, the hypocrisy and the dangerous sectionalism of such a party stands the simple appeal which the Democracy makes to the calm judgment of. the American people an appeal on be half of the Union ol civil and religious liberty for all and of safe and experienced men. guided by sound principles and guar anteed by long tried fidelity, for our public servants." J I The table is at lastf turning in the free, States, rapidly and gloriously for the Con stitution and the Union. . The Democrats of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York are ell now confident of carrying the Electoral votes of those States.! ' In Pennsylvania, the Democrats have to meet Fillmore and Fremont in open and notorious fusion but we verily believe they will carry the State next Tuesday, j If they should fail, however, it will not affect the result in No vember. James Buchanan is stronger, by 20,000 votes, in Pennsylvania than any combination that can fbe formed against turn. Standard, 1 DROPS OF COMFORT. If vactii exercise the confidence of that little child n the sea, who, while the ship 1 xvas rocked with wild fury by the winds, aid serenely, wite a smile on its lips, but no tear in his eye, "My father is at the fielm I" we shall never be disturbed by the clouds and storms which gather around ui Even the bitterest afflictions are recognized blessings when we know they are from Father's hand. They are medicines ne eetsary to health. " They are clouds to shel ter us from tbe dangerous sun of prosperi ty, showers to refresh us in a summer's yioon. What is a picture without shades? , Clouds enrich and adorn a landscape. Perpetual sunlight weather, and the fresh ness and fragrance of a dewy evening are hailed with gladness after the "long sun oy lapse of a summer's daylight.' Afflic ; tions are sweet to the Christian even" when ..the heart is almost bursting with grief, for Jae is assured that the pain is inflicted by a '' kind Father and for the profit of his child. In the darkest boor he hears the precious esse rt ion "Whom the Lord loveth he chas tcoeth, and the entreaty "Let not your heart be troubled. When we are ' in the "depths of poverty, can w not : remember Him who feeds the ravens when they cry, and clothes the lilies t and shall we doubt his willingness to minister to our neeessi tiesT When We are oomeiess, we can hear a voice whispering, "In my Father's house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you." If we are friendless, without an earthly friend, do we not read, "tnere is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. love tnera tnat Jove me r wnen we are assailed by enemies when our characters are aspersed our motives maligned our conduct vilified our best efforts condemn ed may we not, in a Christian spirit, say "snail not Uod avenge his own elect V "The heart knoweth its own bitterness,1 and there are sorrows which must be en dured without sympathy, and in solitude but is there a grief in which our Father will not sympathise? Is there a sorrow which cannot be whispered in His ear?" Is His ear heavy, that it cannot hear?" "Is His arm ever shortened, that He cannot save?" No. There is ho-sorrow that He cannot cure, no wound that he cannot heal. Let us then repair, to our hearenly Fa ther in every dark, distressful hour, and re member that he said, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." And shall we not respond whom have I in heaven but thee ? snd there is none upon earth I de sire besides thee." MASS MEETING OF THE DEMOCRATIC CITI ZENS OF GERMAN BIRTH. New-York, Oct. 7. In order to refute the story circulated by the Fremont papers to tbe effect that a majority of the Amen can. citizens ot derm an . birth would vote for the enemies of the Union at the ensuing election, and in order to afford our fellow ciiisens of that tongue an opportunity to listen to the most eminent German speak ers in tbe United States, they have arrang ed a Mass-meeting to be held at Tammany Hall on Wednesday next. Some of their most able men will address them on that occasion. Among these, we mention Chris- tain Kribben, of St Louis, a lawyer, and of extraordinary ability as an orator. He is equally conversant with the English, Ger man, trench, and other modern languages Another gentleman who is to speak on that occasion, the Hon. Jas. Egly, of Hamilton county, Ohio, and member of the. Legisla ture of the State, is an orator of no less dis tinction than the former. Dr. Brunck.the well known editor of the Buffalo Democrat, is also expected to address the meeting. Thus we may expect a stirring time amohr our German-citnens. yoar. of Con.
