BUCHANAN Th following letur will , be read wit equal interest bj the friends and opponents of Mr. Buchanan. It was written by a. clergyman in Philadelphia', in reply to a note of inquiry from this city;. PHlLADEtPHIA, NOV. 8, 1856. Rtv.'a.nd Dear Sir : Ypar note of in quiry wjis duly received and I take pie-sure in saying that you wfcre '-correct. jr in formed as to my acquaintance with Mr Buchanan, the President eect, and of my farorable opinion of his moral and reli gions. character. I became .personally acquainted with him in-the spring of 1842 in the city of Washington, at which time he was, 1 think, a member of the U.S. Senate; and when introduced to him I found him. with a. Bi ble in hit hand, and our first conversation was with reference to the jdivine authenti city'oP.hat book ; in which he most une quivocally expressed his cot knowing me to be a c time. - My much loved father, who knew Mr. Buchanan firm belief he ergyman at ibe now deceased, most Ultimate! j was associated for many years, and who with htm in -he 27th Cbngress, always spoke ot aim as & man of the strictest Christian morality, and cherished for him an undying affection. . j Mr. Buchanan is of Presbyterian ances try, and I am informed that he has a pew in eah of the Presby terin churches in Lancaster, though. I believe that he gener ally attends the Second Church, of which the Rer. Alfred Nevin,Dj D., is the pastor, and is said to be very regular and devout in public worship, and being very catholic in spirit, he is accustomed to worship with Christians of other denominations when opportunity offers. j I have been informed by one of the set tied ministers of Lancaster, that Mr. Bu chanan is believed, by those who know him best, to be a Christian that he has an hor each day set apart for the study of the Scriptures and devotion that he makes l Jay's Morning and Evening Ex ercises" his daily companion, and it is a matter of wonder and regret with many of nis mtrmate mends that he, like too many of our public men, has so long neglected to unite with the church by a public pro fession of his faith in Uhnst In conversation which' 1 have had with him, he more than once expressed with great tenderness and feeling his desire for retirement from the duties and cares of . public" life the importance of a due . pre paration for his last and final account, and his unwavering confidence in the gracious and over-ruling providence ' of Almighty ' tjotL- i hat ne may nave an .mterest in ', the prayers of the piousi and that his . ad ministration , may be just what might be expected from his unstained moral charac tsr, his great experience! and universally acknowledged statesmanship, should be the earnest desire of every truly patriotic heart.' 1 I have thus promptly answered your in quiries, and frankly, communicated what I know and believe concerning our Chief ' Magistrate elect, and feel entirely justified in so doing, because of the very natural . and reasonable anxiety so generally felt concerning the moral and religious princi pies of one called to fill i a station of such prominence and influence. . Yours fraternally, To the Rev. Dr. f A NUT CRACKER. One December night, or morning rather, Mr. Mungo Mackay gave a thundering rap at the door of Mr. Jonathan Nut, who benumbed with cold, opened his casement, and commenced the following dialogue : Mr. Nut " What dot you want, sir, at this unseasonable hour?!1 Mackay1 Does Mr. Nut live here V " Yes sir." 1 Whit i Mr. Jonathan Nut T " - Yes, sir. What do you want ?" I wish to speak with him." : " Well, my name is Nut" "Is your name Jonathan Nut ?" Yes, sir; what is your wish?" If your name be Jonathan Nut, may the devil crack you I . Good night." Among the "electionjincidents" in this vicinity (says the Lynn, Mass., -News) was one of an attempt j to collect a debt, which showed ingenuity. A gentleman had a demand against another which he was unable to collect. Knowing him to , be an ardent politician, he got another per son to induce him to bet on the result of . the election, offering such abet that it was - quickly taken. The rnoney was placed in the hands of another citizen, and the - creditor sent an officer fend secured the money by a trustee process. - w An elderly fat gentleman, in discussing a warm breakfast at an inn, called to the ' I waiting' boy, f Donald, bring , me more bread ; t eat a great deal of bread, to my steak." Donald answered, with much simplicity, " Aye, please your honor, and je eat a great deal of steak to your bread." : ' ,.; "REPARTEE."- ' The Rev. Dr. McC-- , minister of Douglas id Clydesdale,' was one day din , ing in a large party where the Hon. Hen 4 ry Erskine and some other lawyers were present A great dish of cresses being presented after dinner, Mr. McC-1 who was "V very fond of the vegetable, helped himself T much more largely than any other person, andf as he ate with his fingers with a, pe- culiar'rroracity of manner, Mr. Erskine was struck with the idea that be resemb led Nebuehadnezzer in. his state of con. demnation. Resolved to give him a hit for the apparent grossneis of his manner of eating, the wit addressed him with, "Dr. McC, ye bring me in mind of the great Nebuchadnezzer;" and the company were beginning to titter at the ludicrous allusion, when. the reverend vegetable devourer re plied,' Ay, do I mind ye o Ncbuchadnez- er. inavu e because eaung among the brutes 1" A COURAGEOUS EDITOR. The Lvnchbure Virginian notices the j marriaare of Samuel T. Walker, Esq.; edi tor of the Valley Democrat, to Miss Mary K. Sommers all of Sfcenandoan county, and adds: We knew Mr. Walker a year or two ago, as-a mild, modest, and prudent man :- and never, for once supposed mm to be possessed of the daring and recklessness of spirit necessary to induce Dim to seek an induction into the interminable and lab-" yrinthian intricacies and mysteries of fash- onable crinolines and modern noops. cut editors are brave it is an essential requi site in their qualifications to be so ; and it is not their custom to waver in the dis charge of duty or falter in the face of danger- We wish our adventurous cotempo- rary a safe and pleasant time in his peril ous enterprise and the realization of all the glittering hopes and anticipation that lured him to the marriage state. A sailor dropped out of the main-top of a man-of-war, and, after in some , degree breaking his fall by catching at the rigging, fell on the lieutenant's head and knocked him down on the deck. The sailor jump ed up, as did the lieutenant : u You ras- cai, said me lieutenant, "wnere am you come from " From the north of Ire land, an please your honor," answered the sailor. George W. Johnson, one of the large su gar planters on the Mississippi, below New Orleans, who died recently, has left an es tate valued at not less than $7,000,000. Her has by his will manumitted all his slaves, two hundred in number. They are all to be sent to Liberia in four years from his death, and each one is to be furn ished with $50. A MUNIFICENT GIFT. We learn from, the Natchez Courier that David Hunt, Esq , of Mississippi, made a donation a few days since to Oakland Col lege, in that State, of $50,000. This, to gether with $60,000 given by this gentle man to the Bpe institution, upon former occasions, make his donations amount to $ 110,t)00. One of the conditions append ed to the last gift is that "should Oakland College cease to exist as an institution of public education, in that event the dona tion shall go to the next-best ettort for sim ilar purposes in the. South. ,f , It is stated that the number of English and Scotch settled in Ireland is now more than double what it was only ten years aro. A Galwav paper savs : "The west of Ireland seems destined to be silently revolutionized to Scot and Saxon." RARE JUSTICE. Under the head of "Administration of Justice" we find the following paragraph ia a Costa Rican paper: . "No. 27 September 12. The State a gainst Jose Dolores Munoz, of San Jose, for the crime of secretly planting tobacco. The sentence of the Judge of Hacienda is confirmed, condemning the prisoner to sev en years two months and thirteen days' imprisonment at hard labor, and to pay a fine of four hundred and seventy dollars, besides costs of suit." HAVE WE A KNIGHT AMONQ US. A correspondent in Copenhagen, informs us that the majesty of Denmark has con ferred a knighthood of the order of Danne borg on our countryman, Morse, the inven tor of the electric telegraph, who is, there fore, Sir Samuel, if he choses to be called so, instead of Mr. Morse. N. York Times. WITTY SAILOR. A sailor being asked how he liked his bride, is reported to have remarked "Why, d'ye see, I took her for to be only half of me, as the parson says, but dash me, if she isn't twice as much as I. I'm only a tar she's a tar-tar." WILMINGTON SAVINGS BANK. THIS Institution loeated atCapt. Feb. 7, 1856. 138 PROSPECTUS OF THET " SOUTHERN SENTINEL," A Democratic and Miscellaneous Journal, to be published weekly, at Wilson, V. C. THE existing condition of political parties, and of partizan strife, naturally suggests the estab lihing of such a journal as the "Southern Senti nel" proposes 10 become. The present, indeed, ia a crisis in our political history, never witnessed be fore. The Constitution has been invsded ; the laws trampled and spat upon ; teligiousliberty assailed ; ballot boxes broken and burnt; the landmarks of our political ancestry partially effaced ; the wis dom derived from a time-honored experience un seated; strange and questionable men have been pushed into high positions ; and fanaticism, unchai ned from its axe and its faggot plies in the North, is heard to howl among ua in the South. These evils, sofara it humble abilitica shsll serve, THE SOUTHERN SENTINEL Will endeavor to arrest. It will endeavor to incul cate a reverence for the laws as they exist, and for the Constitution, aa it has been interpreted by the wise men of the past and by the Fathers of the Democratic faith, It willdefend not only political but RBLtcioua liberty, and will do battle against ev ery political heresy that may appear, whethei hatched in caves or culverts, or open convention. The Sentinel will also, to relieve the monotony of politics, devote space to literary topics, original and selected, as well aa to miscellaneous subjects, which shallinclude Agricultural and the latest Com mercialintelligence. In brtef, no efforts nor ex penses will be spared to make the Sentinel one of the most useful and efficient journala in the South. The first number of the Sentinel will be Issued about the first of the next month, and sent to sub scribersst the rate of S2 per annum : S2.50 at the end of six months, and S3 at the end of tbs year.
