One el-fing lately. 4t Baden, in a coiTtjai- to triumph in a conflict where love versation relating- to tbeTEeling of tear anljltari fniUrl Afir i reaunance, still enterfafned by a fev? jmh- enoferaona (Rossini amonat then)) at the fre idea of a journey jby rajroad, so one was telling the story jJSytmng- Vene tian, tDount Florestan G. Elegant, witty, and brafe,Iihe Cpunt hadsxjvoved his courage 4nyarous occas ions but the coolness and strength of mind, that Jie exh bited on every poiaL-ranished eutirr.aat the sight of a railroaa station. A steam locomotive, to hitn, jya the cause bf an unconquerable terror' . In vain did his imimateahd confidential friends endeavor to overcome this weak ness. The gravest reasoning, the most merciless quizzing-, were alifce wasted up on him. Perchance the young Count had a bad dream, or he was the victim of some sinister prediction A deep impression over mastered hia will. He was convinced that a dreadful fate awaited him, if ever he were so imprudent as to trust himself on a rail road. For him, it would; be hurrying to a Certain catastrophe, an inevitable death. One .circumstance making this timidity till more annoying was, that the Count, so dreadfully afraid of the modern mode of rapid locomotion, was a great lover of travelling, an inquisitive tourist, desirous of visiting all countries! In each of his excursions he found himself stopped by the change which was superseding post-horses, and he anxiously foresawijthe moment neat at hand when the whole .world having be come enclosed in a net-work of iron rails, a tourist would have no choice between a car or a hack. In the meantime the Count gave as much work as he could to the last surviving post boys. He traversed Eiirope during the s immer months, and spent every winter in some city which he examined at h s lei sure, and of which he studied the manners and customs while frequenting the best so ciety. During a winter that he was thus spend ing at Berlin, the young Venetian fell vio lently in love with a charming lady, who, in addition to (he most sejuciive attractions, possessed the advantagejof being an excel lent match. Then the -traveller who bad already seen many lands, thought that the best tning he could do, would be to unha ness his post-horses arid settle down in matrimony. j He paid his court, andj was favorably re ceived ; without, however, being fallowed lo reckon upon assured success. " Thus passed the winter, and tfie lover began to despair, when one day he young lady at last made up her mind to the long-hoped for avowal. . j After a few signiScant words which fill ed his heart with soft emotion, she said to him : "I have promised tj spend next month in Belgium where a pajrt of my family re sides. I shall start to-morrow : it depends upon yourself alone, whether vou will ac company me. j "What!" exclaimed! the young man, radiant, "a journy together I" u Certainly," returned the lady with an a all i t encouragin smile, and a look which made her meaning clear, "Can (prevent you from going at the sama time as myself, or from gelling in the same car on the rail road V At the words, car and railroad, the Count grew pale ; intense emotion was depicted on his countenance. Tle lady mistook tha cause of the paleness arid the e motion; she attributed both to the effect of sudden and unhoped-for happiness, fend she added with most bewitching grace is agreed, then; to-morrow, at 12, at the station." The Count, halting jbetween love and fear, passed a terrible night. However, after a long and painfulj struggle, love con quered ; and in the morning he was re solute to run the risk of the terrible road. Ha made his preparations with feverish resignation, and at the last moment went Co the station. At the (sight oi the engine, which had just been hikened to tha train, he felt Lis resolution gijre way, fear was a gain in the ascendant, find he was about to retreat, when his lady-love, who was there in all her beauty, cajne to him and said, " Q.uick, get your ticket. I have marked jour place next to dine in this carriage, where we shall be alotie." Encouraged by these flattering words, lore regind the mastery, and the Count procured his ticket. J ' " Do come 1" cried tne lady, calling her travailing companion through the window of the carriage, in which she had placed brself. The Count, stifling bought, sprang for ward; but suddenly a formiabIe whistle scaped from the eng ne, and he stopped, frozen with terror. The wretched man remained motionless for an instant, casting now. upon tha smiling lis bewildered gaze, lady who was call ingto him, now upon the srr oking, shriek ing locomotive then.whh a gesture of des pair, he buried his face in his hands to hide bis shame and grief,an rushed out of sight Cursing the timidity which had cost him his happiness, and which ha could not conquer, be went, the!next winter, to seek forgetfulness in Paris. j While there, he re ceived a letter from an uncle living at War caw, who . requested his immediate pre sence. This uncle was very old, and dan gerously ilL He wished, before he died, o see his nephew whom he had not seen for fifteen years. f " Make haste," he wrote, M I bave but a few days to live, but Vo may yet be here in time to receive my fast farewelj, by tak ing the railroad without any delay. If you leave, as I beg you io do, as soon as vou receive my letter, yoi will arrive here next Saturday. I do not doubt your eagerness, and shall expect you Son that day." The Count waa willing enough to re spond to his appeal Interest and affection both urged -' him to -do so He was not wealthy, and expected a large portion of hia relation's rich inheritance. He knew him to be very touchy, and quite capable f leaving in his will an evidence of his aner, if hia nephew did not arrive on the appointed day. ' But in order to arrive on that day, he -. Last year, the Count returned to Venice ; and his friends, deploring more than ever the weakness that misrht be the cause of yet more disasters to him, resolved to cure him at any price. They did not doubt that the Count, be ing extremely superstitious, yielded to the threat of some fatal prophecy. A Som nambulist had told him that death would come upon him on a railroad, the first time he ventured upon one. Zealously desirous to cure him of an unworthy pusilanimity and to show him how chimerical were bis terrors, they hit upon a plan which they thought must prove infallible the Count was invited to breakfast, at a villa near one of the stations of the road between Venice and Milan. A narcotic was mixed with his wine; ard when the train passed by and he was fast asleep, his friends placed him in one of the cars. The train was travelling with the rapid ity of lightning when the Cpunt awoke. 'Where am 1" he asked, with astonish ment. "On the railroad," answered his laugh ing friends, "and you see it does not kill you." With a dreadful scream, the Count rose as though to spring from the enr, and fell back senseless in the arms of his friends. All the care bestowed upon him was use less ; before the train stopprd at the next station, the Count was dead. The fright had killed him, and the prediction was ver ified. Rossini has probably heard this story, of which all the details are well authenti cated, and which caused a sensation in Italy. BE KIND TO YOUR VVIFR. Be kind to your wife. Think how in the first blush of maiden beauty she turned aside from the haunts of plea sure and the caress of fond parents and biotners and sisters, to follow your for tunes through the world. Think with wthat blended h-pe and agony you fol lowed her from place to place, watching her every look, and pondering the meaning of her most caieless tones, un til, won by your importunity, she placed her hand all trustlully in yours and saiJ, I am all your own. Think ol caiess and anxieties, and the physical sufiering she has incurred for you, and do not desert her now, when her cheek J has faded, her step has lost its elasticity. auu sne sits an uncomplaining watcher over your best interests, a self incarce rated prisoner in her own home. Merrily the music sounds, young feet trip lightly in the mazy dance, and joyous laughter along the walls but she is not there; the curtain rises and the far famed artiste comes forth to chain the listening crowd with her melodious song-butshe is not there. The orator arises before his wrapt audience, his rich deep tones ot eloquence float ing away along the crowded passages, and curling upward as a voiced incense to the vaulted roof, but she is not there. Art opens her new stores and displays her wonderful creations on the glowing canvass, and in the speaking bust; your wife is a lover of the chaste and beau tiful, but she is not there; literature presents new leaves, fresh from the fas cinating pens of genius the wife and mother has but little time to read. No; there she lingeis at home, a God commissioned watcher over helpless children; singing the babe to sleep, bend ing to catch the lisping voices of those dear ones who have a thousand im aginary wants, encouraging the quiet and soothing the fretful. She is weary, but doe not complain, her tenlples throb, but she heeds not their throbbing, as ever and anon she turns a wishful glance towards the door, for she expects her husband. She expects you; and her whole world of happiness will be there when you arrive. Will you enter that room with cold indifference? will you utter a hasty word in her presence? Will you sit down with that frown on your countenance, or complain of the burdens you are call ed to bear? Will you thoughtlessly re mind, her of her faded beauty, or man ifest surprise at her ignorance of many things passing in great the world from which che has been excluded by her peculiar duties? Will vou suffer the re collection of any more youthful, or more Deautitut, to haunt you in home's hal lowed precincts, or cross the white leaf of conjugal felicity with one unhallowed I thought? Oh ! remember your early love,-your early promises: think howl faithfully 6he has kept hens love her as you ought, and she is still beautiful beautiful in her. pure motherly affec tions, her self sacrificing devotion to you. Realize that she is all your own; that throughout the wide world you are sure of but one heart, whose every cord is linked invisibly to a counterpart in yours; realize that upon her bosom alone you may weep out your sorrows in the day of trial, without' the fear of being mocked. Husband love your wife! Gather her to your heart of hearts, as if in her were all your hopes of happiness com bined; bless her daily for her patience, and truth,-stand up like a man between her and the rude cold world, and teach yojrr children to honor her, that God njjjr honor you.- In all the relations of me there conies a parting hour; and we beaggfcu you so to live,, that, if it should your lot to kiss her clay io kiss ner ciav emu i ids, iiKk- say- wronged you, 0M?e Branch.
