equally potent as a preventative of chicken
cholera, by putting the blooms iu their

It is also an excel leut. remedy for man,
with long trouble. Take au ordinary hand

quart of , good rye whiskey, and take a

says some one, "I thought you were op

bitterly opposed to iuo use of it as a bever
age, and never use it in any shape or form,
bat I hare very little patience with.tnis
Puritanical-tomfoolery, which condemns
the use of it, strictly as a medicine. .
P. S. As said 'fennel" is now in fall

of it for use in fall and winter.

Our Dumb Animals.
Boys do not Jndge a man by his clothing.
A tittle incident occurred on oneliueof
street cars a few days since which is worthy
of notice. A pooily clad woman entered
the car carrying an infant in her. arms. As
she sat opposite I observed she seemed
troubled about something. When the
condaoto? passed through the car for the
fares she said in a very low voice : "Please
sir, I have no money, let me ride this time
and some other time I will pav you." "I
can hear that story every day," said the
conductor, in a loud, rough voice. "Yon
can pay or get off." "Two fares, please,"
said a pleasant voice, as a toil-worn and
sunburned hand passed the conductor ten
cents. "Heaven bless you sir," said the
woman, and 'long and silently she wept ;
the language of the heart so eloquent to
express our hidden thoughts. This man in
worn and soiled garment was one of God's
noblemen He possessed a heart to feel
for the woes of others, and although tbe
act was bnt a trifle, it proves that we can
not, with safety, judge a man by hi3
clothing . For many a truo - heart , beats
beneath a ragged jacket."
Six weeks ago I suffered with a very
efevere cold ; was almost unable to speak.
My friends all advised me to consult a phy
sician, Noticing Chamberlain's Cough
liemedy advertised in the St Paul Yolks
Zaitung I procured a bottle, and after ta
king it a short while was entirely well I
now most heartily recommend this remedy
to anyoue suffering with a cold Wm Keil,

Mb. Editor I Lava not hal a say for
quite a time, but urn still lit Jog,' and come
now to greet your readers ou tbe passing
plicated nature. !. . - ' (
A few days ago I had Rome business of
much importance with that great merchant
king, Thos, -W. Blount, at liopor hud to
go and see hmr. How to get there was a J
more complicated question to this individu
al than, the silver question. On the Mack
ey 'a Ferry road stood an obstacle in the
shape of a creditor ouuldn't pass him,
never. On the direct Itoper road lay iu its
innocence that Red Hill of which every
body had said so much. Oh what a time I
had to get the consent of my mind to drive
over it, "but after taking out an accident
policy aud telling ''that wife of mine" that
in case ut death she would be left a suffi
cient sum to catch any ordinary man lor
better or tor worse, I had her good bye,
and going to Theo B iweu'a called for the
best gentle tuaui he had. Well, Boweu
gave me a nice teaji, Cue of these consid
erate horses which would never cause you
to be pullud up by Chief Tucker for labt
driving. At last I got out of town and on
lied Hill. Well I was disappointed in
the condition of the road I forgot to apply
the whip according to careful instruction
from Mr, Bjwen, and the Horse actually
stopped and looked 'round to See if 1 was
asleep.
I bucceeded in reaching - Roper after a
time and after gettiug Bapper ut Hotel da
Koper, I touud Mr. JJiuuut and said my
piece, then took in tho town, by the light
of the wuon and eketne liuhtu. In the
colored hall a ola-s of colored orphans
were having a line time, and as tuey had a
baud, you know I saw nil ttie colored pupa
laiiou at one sight,, for u may bo trmy said

This little town is a lively place After
wauderiug about for uoui time I started
by Blount's Hall, and from its open win
dows came the sweet btraius of tue violfu
and accompanying notes of the piano.
Being lured by the swet music, I walked
in and found tho spacious hall filled with
beautiful women aud galUut men eujoying
one of those social dances Ji;r whicn itoper
is famous. Not being a dancing man, 1
slid in and took a seat just to watch the
rest enjoy the thiug. It was then gettiug
late and by eleven o'clock I began to see
tLat those people were inclined to be' so
cial, so I made myself as agreeab.e as I
could. Everything was passing along
smoothly, ten coup! a were going through
tbe quadrille, on my right sit a beautiful
girl nnd I was just beginning to think if I
was a young man tkat girl would have to
listen to soDieihlug sweeter than the music
that was being rendered by Mess. Jim aud
Dickens Gay lord. You know it is said
that some of the sweet girls have no heart,
well this was not true of this young lady,
for at this point, without a moment's warn
ing, the electric liahts were shut off ajyii
we were leu wnere moses was on .enr oo
casion Speak about heartf, well if you
had ; bvseu sittiri" , wtfere I was yeu could
haveUestided tor the fact that that lady had
a heart and no mistake. J-he did unt
scream, neither did the others preseurf
neither did they bound1? to the highest
chairs, as would haye beeu the case had a
mouse ben turned loose in the . room, but
all sat perfectly still and the silence thai
followed was only broken by the rapid
I'UlsItions of that girl's heart, beating about
one hundred to ttie haif uiiuute, ' Oil iamps
soon took the place of the electric lights,
and the dauc j continued. ' I left for tear a
