Brown, of Beaufort. For Solicitor First District Geo. V. Ward, of Pasquotank. For Congress First District--Jno. , II. Small, ofBeauforty-"' For " State SenaoSeeond District II. S.Ward. of Washington. J. . WMrfier, of Pamlico, Ik his speech of acceptance be fore the Senatorial Convention last week, Mr. II. S. Ward hit the truth square in the face when he said that No, man who voted for Wm. Jen nings Bryau could abuse the Popu lists. That's no joke. The masses of the Populist party are as much disgusted with the result of fusion as the Democrats are, aud if all indi cations ,do not fail, there will be a mighty change in November. jFeoit every point in the District comes the news that the Senatorial ticket nominated by the Democrats here last week is a strong one. Ward aud Miller, the candidates, are a strong team and will give the District a thorough canvass, meet ing their opponents at every point in a joint discussion, if possible. J. W. Miller, Esq., of Pamlico, is a hard Avorking farmer who has the interests of the farmers and laboring people at heart. Die was, up until six years ago, a leading Democrat, but at that time, hey like many of his friends, became discouraged and in his eagerness for financial relief, sought that relief in the Populist party; He, like the masses of that party, believed that the only hope of reform was in the overthrow of the Democratic party, but after two years he saw his mistake ; he saw that the new party had met its fate, that by its leaders the party had been sold out, and that instead of giving relict to the downtrodden farmer, it. had given life to Republi canism and made matters worse, and when his party fused and his leaders elected Goldbng Pritchard to the Senate, he denounced the action and returned to the Democratic fold, and has since labored as zealously for its success as he did for the success of the new party. He is man of ability, and of character which no man can question, and if elected his Populist friends will find in him a representative worthy of their con fidence. Hallet S. Ward, Esq., is a young man of the legal profession who is uncompromising in Iris Democracy. He stands flatfooted upon the Chica go platform. He is -a zealous advo cate of the white metal and white supremacy. He is gifted with a power of speech that will make him a terror to his opponents, and his ability to defend the cause of De mocracy will win for him and his party a majority that will place him beside Miller in the next Senate of the Old North State. The farmer who has left the Democratic party and joined the Populist because he believed that through the latter he would be materially benefitted, and also that cer tain political abuses which be considered la existence nnder Democratic rale would be abolished, this Populist farmer should now take a careful aad conscientious view of his position, aad see how and where he stands today, r x Why the Populist farmer should especi ally consider his political standing just now is due to the fact that an important State election is tojbe held in November, and that farmer ought to intelligently con sider all the points bearing npon his con dition, material and political, and 6ee Whether hia change from Democrat to Populist, has met his hopes and expecta tions, or whether the change has been to his disadvantage. Leaving out the question of office hold ing, for the f&rnier has not changed hia politioal party for the sake of getting an office, the first point is, how has the far mer been materially benefitted ? The Republican-Populist party promised the farmer that his taxes would be lighter, yet the published reports of the board of equalization show that this fusion party, which preached Democratic extravagance, has been unable to carry on the State government without-raising more taxes, and the only cass which has been taxed to pay this ejft'ra amount is the larnier. Therefore, the farmer can see that ma Mally fusion government has made his living higher, by extra, taxation. This, extra tax raised at the farmer's ex pense ought to show the Populist farmer that financial reform has not come through fusion in State affairs. On the issue of silver, the Populist far mer will see that his new party leaders, while 'preaohing silver, and a coinage of 10 to 1, have ever sought to cooperate with Republicans, who have contended for the gold standard. In tho matter of county government the Populist farmer of eastern North Carolina finds himself subject to the negro, in whose control most of the county matters are given by those who told the farmer that the Populist party would give him just what he needed. Thus the Populist farmer finds that in every particular he has been deceived. His taxes are higher, and he is made to pay the extra cost of the State government. Hia State's publio affairs are scandalized in nearly every institution and depart ment. His county affairs are placed in the hands of the negro, and the negro is thus given a position by which he may force himself socially upon the white man, and as an official can subject the farmer to indigni ties ' The Popnlist farmer does not need to study very much to find that the grossest deception has been practiced and that his present and luture welfare depends upon his quitting such associations, of getting from a party which has lowered the far mer's position, and which if continued in power will make his position still worse, Newbern Journal, To Cube Constipation Fokeveb. About the 10th of September, we propose to issue a large campaign paper, fully illustrated, and con taining a complete review of negro rule in North Carolina and of the maladministration of public affairs under the present regime, r ; ' , It will be the strongest paper ever issued in tho advocacy of White Man's Government. There will be 50,000 copies issued, allowing an average of 500 to each county; and they will be sent di rectly to the County Chairman for distribution. The Chairman of each county is requested to begin at once and pro cure the names of 500 voters to whom they will send these papers ; and he is further requested to pre pare in advance the stamped wrap pers and have everything in readi ness to send the papers out. The cost will be small to each county and the money should be raised at once to pay this postage. It is suggested that Democrats in every township shall send at once a list or names to the County Chairmen. Capt. S. A. Ashe will assist in preparing this paper. . h. M. Simmons, Chairman. N. B. Each mau in Washington county receiving a copy of the Roa noke Beacon with this article marked, is urged to at once prepare a list of names to whom they would like this literature sent, with the postoffice address of each : and he is also requested to raise the money to pay postage on same. Bryan DO YOU REMEMBER? Do yon remember when the leaves were 1 r - j; iauiug, Dropping like golden rain (Your azure eyes knew naught of sorrow's suauiug, Nor any tinge of pain) We walked beneath the trees, the moon was 6hining 'Mid fleecy clouds above, iust showing uj their inner, silver lilting Do you remember, love ? Do you remember when the birds were caning, Sadly from naked boughs? And softly, silently the turf was falling, On furrows made by ploughs? And when the 'plimage of the angels whit ened- Both field and river shore I felt your fingers round mine own were tightened As if to part so more. And just to think the year is not yet van ished And we are fai apart Like two lost souls from Love's sweet Eden banished Sent forth with pierced heart ! Perhaps the past is scarcely worth regret ting And Lethe comes to all. Perhaps there is a pleasure in forgetting Scenes past beyond recall. Ah! should it come this will you remember When autumn comes apace And leaves are falling through a drear November Like tears on nature's face The good old tender days when earth seem ed resting Beneath your sunny smile In quiet peacefulness its joy attesting And sorrows slept a while ? Yet should the future bring to you repining A craving for the past Remember always clouds have silver lining And even love may last That from the tossing seas the ships come bailing Laden with precious freight All careless of the winter winds loud wail ing Not lost, but late. The Packers at the Battle of Santi ago de Cuba were all Heroes. Their Heroic Efforts in Getting Ammunition and Rations to the Front Saved the Day. P. E, Butler, of pack-train No. 3, wri ting from Santiago, De Cuba, on July 23d, says: "We all had diarrhoea in more or less violent form, and when we landed we had no time to . see a doctor, for it was a case of rush and rush night aud day tjo keep the troops supplied with ammunition and rations, but thanks to Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, we were able to keep at work and keep our health ; in fact, I sincerely believe that at one critical time this medicine was the in direct saviour of our army, for if the pack ers had boon unable to work there would have been no way of getting supplies to the front. There were no roads that a wagon train could use. My comrade and myself had the good fortune to lay in a supply of this medicine for our pack-train before we left Tampa, and I know in four cases it ab solutely saved life."
