We note with pleasure that our popular Senator, II. S. Ward, Esq., is on several important com mi tree-5, nnd that he is making a record in 'the "Reformation General Assembly'' of North Carolina, lie is laboring earnestly for the relief of his con stituents, and if he makes a mistake it will be of the head ani not of the heart. While he is an uncompro mising Democrat, when his eloquent voice vibrates through the Senate chamber, it will be for the good, and in the interest of all the people, and while those measures he advo cates may now seem selfish and un just to one class or party, yet in time we believe all will agree with him. It is for the future welfare of this commonwealth that he and his col leagues are working, and may he and they be guided might. "What can be the good of all this trouble the Legislature is taking to investigate the State Institutions, ; penitentiary, &c?" is a question! iimxz conies iron: some ignorant source. Indeed there js every reason that it should be done, and the good is two-fold. In the first place there is reasons to believe that in recent years the State Institutions have been a shield to dishonest politicians ; that they have been used by party to promote party interests, that the management has heed uuwise and incompetent, and as a result of this the institutions have failed in being an honor to the Stale. In the second place the investi gation is a necessity, as it will show lo the public that the party that lias been in charge during the past four years are incompetent to deal with the people's property and that they 1 1 i - . navoaotised the Uusts committed to their care. Or it will show that the people have been misled, in which case the institutions will be abolish ed to save the credit of the State. La Grifpk Svcct.ssfui.lv Treated. Editok Beacon: During the campaign, last fall, s?veral citizens of Washington county, who, know ing my great fondness for possum, and desiring, as they said, to show their appre ciation of my bumble efforts in their behul: volunteered, most earnestly, to send me one, or more, possums as sooa as it was cola enough to ship the animal dressed for cookiu; Now, Mr. Editor, you cannot imagine how these promises rejoiced my heart nor how longingly I looked toward to the com ing of cold weather and those possums for I told several friends that jf I did not get anything else ont of the result ia North Carolina I would haye several possum sup pers, and that they should enjoy them with me. Well, time wore on and Christmas was near at hand wheu, as I was hurridly leav- lug on a trip, I was informed by my cook, "one dem possums have cum." I did not t, f,. . 1 .1 I present, but very "naturally concluded it was a real old fashion Washington county possum and all right in every particular, During my absence I wrote to my friends inviting them to "a North Carolina possum supper," Dec, 2lth 1893. I returned they eime (fiveof them) and when that possum was placed on the table six of the blankest faces you cau imagine surveyed its proper tions. That possum wns "a leetle abuv a rat" in t-ize but a ding size larger than I felt. My guests took iu the situation and guyed tue unmercifully but managed to have a ratling gocd time on tbe other provisions. 1 Jmve never braid who sent that possum but l want mm to know that I fully avmre- ciat Ins pviij, F.'M.-fin'r to tr?,, hi ,... t, . . p-'-oaiiri.--. lie is evidently otto out of mauy, so far. I do not wish to be understood as com plaining, but I would like to know what part of the county that possoin came from. It was late iu December when that pos sum reaeuect me ana, ordinarily, a possum at that seasou should have attained some size, Wliy this one was bo small I do not know, but I have some theories : First Ho may have been a republican possum and, after the election, have "swtuik up" to keep pace with his party. Second. He may have been a populist possum aud, f so, he, very naturally, was trying to disappear entirely. Third. He may have been a timon pure democratic possum and had "jest laffed and hollered hisself most away.'' I am indebted to you for mauy kindness es but if you will ascertain who sent me that possum I will feel so obligated that that yon ueed not send the possum you promised mo would come as soon a? sim ruens begau to fall, and further, you may inform the -'Creswell W.
