Governor Uobt. U. Glenn arrived 'iu Plymouth at 6:50 Tuesday eve ning over the v. C. L., was met at Mitj deput by a committee of ladies mid geutleiMen who escorted liiui to Hotel Hriukiey. Early Wednesday hum rain Bee ni ;ih t?jon i$iop .up a light i li, lUttllllg the air fresh and bracing, and the people for miles uruuint ba;iii t( pour into the ton, and the town people were making ready to help the visitord enj y the d.iy and make the occasion a femperaut-e Kaliy ill deed and in truth, and they din. At 9:30 the Pi & train roiled iu with three cars bided 'with men, women and children from ail parts of the county. The bait with the Band and a party from Williamstou Hiriycd about this time. The mid day train on the A. C. L. , aud the north bound i & brought dele gations from neighboring towns, and still the people came until there were something like three thousand peo ple on our streets. At 11:45 twenty mounted Mar shals and fully three hundred school children lined up in front of the hotel where they joined the Naval iieserves and banu, a few minutes later the carriage wnicn wm to con vey the Governor and party drew up with bunting, flags ii'id banners fly ing. The Governor came upou the scene and stepped into the carriage, with him in the carrsage were: Lt. C. Latham, of the Naval Reserves. Chairman. V. S. Davenport, of the Anti-Saloon League mid A, 0. Gay lord, Esq. The procession formed of Water Street as follows: Chief Director of Millitaiy Escort, Dr. A. V. Disso sway, mounted iu full dress uniform and eaber, commanded the parade, Chief Marshal, A. V. Swain aud his first assistant, M. V. Norman, led the parade, then came the .Naval Re serves led by the WillianistonCoruet Band aud in command of Lt. J. L, Phelps; then came the Speakers car riage with a mounted escort; then came the schools, hundreds of sweet children, from 6 to IS years of age, led in double file by Supt. C. J. Jiverett and Prof- McCaniass, and marshaled in perfect order by the various teachers, while twenty well mounted Marshals kept up the rear and side lines. J he parade thus formed moved up Water to Jefferson, up Jefferson to ivlani, down Main to Washington, out Washington to oth Avenue, up the Avenue to Jefferaou down Jefferson to Main thoncedowu Main to the Court House, in front of which, yet protected by the por tico, amid festoons of red, white and bine, was arranged the speaker's stand, to this the great Governor of our State was escyrted, aud then and there, in a few well chosen words, by presented to ihe vast audience by A. O. Gaylord, Esq. The fcoeuKr arose amid a great applause, said he came h-'re to speak but did not expect to have all tiie people of Washington county out to hear him. For nearly two hours he held his audience almost epel-boum by his powerful aud eloquent appeals for the cause of Prohibition. By nis iiiafcnitieent oratory he swayed the multitude, by his powerful argu meats ihat were undeniable, he con vinced the vast assembly that he wu defending the cause ot right, and as their Chief Officer, ne was but d.nn his sworn duty when he wm lighting tiie de:-;mou, whiskey, that in so do ing he was defending ti e Slate, the best inteiests, the peace a;ui pros perity of the people, the nomes, the women and children, of North Caro lina and his God. During the entire time he wad sptakiiig he was listened to with such marked attention ihat he made refrenceo it, saying ihat he nad not only been given one of the larg est, but possibly the most beany and royal reception in Plymouth, that he had received at any point in the State. He seemed to emphasize with pleasure, the fact thaf, though he is the Commander-in-chief of the millitary forces of the State, Wash ington county is the first place he has been recognized as such by such a grand millitary display, he com plimented the men and officers very highly on the wide reputation they Iiave won. This was not done on the fetund, but to at the depot in a con versation with the Beacon Man. T h e p pea k e r d i st u sted the whiskey question iu all its borrows in a very forcible, yet pathetic and inolleushe way and he challenged any may to answer his arguments against the saloon, sale, manufacture or use of whiskey. He denounced as false the statement of meu who boast that they have had the honotof drinking with him since he has been Goei tor of North Carolina. At the close of the speech all the schools eaug appropriate temperance songs nhrt the Ootcfnor joined with them while he t-hook hands with all who pissed by. From ' he open expressions heard on the streets after the speaking, it is believt-d that much good will re suit from the Governor appeal. The people of Washington county hud with them on Wednesday u great nan. they had h big day, a threat imIJv, now Ift. them keep it up until the ":26th of May and all will be well.
