Modeiarai Methods As Applied in the South. " - - Notes of Interest to Planter, Fruit Grower and Stockman . Milk Goats. The United States .Department of Agriculture .lias been looking some what into the question of using goats for milk producers. Italy uses the goat largely as a milk animal, and it is not uncommon there for the milk man to lead a goat up a flight of Etairs and milk it before the buyer of the milk. For one thing, that insures that .the milk is fresh. In some of the cities of the United States it is not uncommon to sea in the suburbs, where weeds and rubbish abound, a goat tied out. That goat is not mere ly for a pet. It supplies some family with milk. As far as the observation of the writer goes, tha practice of keeping goats in American cities for this end IS most common among the Irish. Very eminent phj'sicians affirm that goat milk Is the best solution of the problem of tuberculosis, slow con sumption being the form In which most persons recognize tuberculosis In man. Dr. Finley Bell, of the New York Academy of Medicine, agrees with Sir William Broadbant in saying the goat is .not subject to tuberculosis. The testimony of leading English goat keepers support him in this position. Such a distinguished personage as Professor Nocard says that out of 130,000 gcats and kids taken to Paris yearly for slaughter not one has been found by the meat inspectors to be affected by tuberculosis. Suggest the use of goat milk, and nine times out of ten you are told that, it is not fit to drink. That is more a matter of habit than anything else. There are some who declare that catfish are unfit to eat. Others Bay perch are no good. But the funny thing about it is that each of these may bs eating the fish that, the other says is unfit to eat. If we had been raised on goat milk, we should say it is fine. Many who speak from experi ence, among them the investigators on a British commission, say goat milk has a richness and flavor su perior to what can be found in cow milk. While goats respond to good treat ment, they will find a living where cows could not, and they give a sur prising amount of milk that is, the milk breeds do. There i3 more differ ence among the breeds of goats in the amount of milk given than there is among the breeds of cattle. It will surprise some to learn that, an Amer ican Milch. Goat Record Association was, organized over four years ago; also, that while a quart of milk is a fair yield for some goats, some have been known t yield from four to six and even twelve iuarts of milk a day. At present milch goats are scarce in this country, and they com mand prices .that are inclined to make buyers dizy. "frinc Peruvian Cotton. Efforts are being made by the De partment of Agriculture to introduce in the South the fine, long staple cot ton of the Ineas. t Cotton growing in Peru dates back to prehistoric times, and it is quite a common occurrence to bring to light fine specimens of cotton textiles, in digging up ancient Inca graves. Pizarro was astonished at the fine cotton cloth worn by the Peruvians. At various times subsequent to the conquest foreign varieties of cotton Egyptian, Argelian, Sea Island, Metafifi have been introduced among tho plantations, but the dis tinctly Peruvian'varlety, the Peruvian rough of commerce, still commands superior prices abroad. Exports are chiefly to England and the United States. The famous Peruvian rough, however, does not take kindly to cul tivation in all parts of the Republic, lea and Plura being the regions where apparently It thrives best. The variety called locally "Egyp tian," which is our "Upland" of the United States, grows readily in the coast region of Peru. The Argelian variety is less adaptable to local con ditions and suffers greatly from a prevalent blight, the. bane of cotton planters, which is locally known as "hielo" (frost). It is probably of bacteriological origin. The Metafifl .(Yanovitch), and Sea Island are grown In spots along the coast, chiefly at Supe and Huacho, near Lima, for export chiefly. The limitations of the local mills form the chief reason for the more prevalent selection of the variety known as Egyptian, which 13 more easily worked than the others. -Guy E. Mitchell. The larger breeds develop more slowly than the smaller breeds, and must accordingly be hatched earlier to reach .the development necessary for winter eggs. Unless an egg-eating hen is very valuable, eat her. It is the quickest way to cure her of her bad habit; but any hen may eat an egg if she finds It broken. Little chioks need plenty of exer cise, but they can get it without going out into the tall wet grass every morning. Such wetting should be avoided. Pullets that were hatched too early are likely to become grown and go into a moult, the same as yearling hens, and not start to laying as early as pullets that were hatched some what later. Progressive Farmer. How a Daiiy Cleared $.3000. To show what the Southern States have to offer along dairy lines, we present herewith a report of our col lege dairy herd, which consists of two pure-bred Jersey bulls and forty one Jersey cows, all but six of which are grades. The report covers a per iod of nine months, during which the average number of cows milked was thirty-eight. Following is a state ment of receipts and expenditures: RECEIPTS-. Cnsh $5,359 Eleven calves 175 Estimated value of manure 8S0 Total $0,414 expend: ruRES. Concentrates $1,548 Two hundred and fifty tons corn silage 500 Twenty-five tons corn stover 150 Two tons peavine hay 20 Labor.. , 915 Ice 110 Estimated cost of fuel ... 60 Sundries 43 Total. $3,400 Balance in favor of dairy is .....3,005 Milk was sold in bulk at twenty five cents per gallon; cream testing twenty per cent.,' at $1 per gallon; butter, at thirty-five cents per pound; and butter milk, at fifteen cents per gallon. Most of the products were sold as milk and cream. The cows received no pasturage whatever, which increased the ex pense for feed. While only a nine months' record is presented here, these were by rio means exceptional months. Indeed, we feel confident, from present indi cations, thai the net earnings for the balance of the year ""will average higher than thase for the period given here. There is an unlimited market for dairy products in this State at the prices quoted above, especially for milk and cream. Milk retails at from eight cents to fifteen cents per quart, Avith an average of fully ten cents per quart. As to fesd, there is no question whatever that a cow can be fed more cheaply here than in any of the lead ing dairy sections of the country. John Mich els, Professor of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, "North Caro Una A. and M. College. Fertilizing Value of Straw. In the great wheat belts it is often the practice to burn straw; in other sections straw is largely wasted. Straw has both a considerable feed ing and a fertilizing value. In order to determine its fertilizing value ex periments have been made by the Maryland Experiment Station. Fresh wheat straw was broadcasted at a rate of two tons per acre In the early fall and plowed down the following spring, and the following results were obtained: The untreated land produced thirty-four bushels of corn per acre and sixteen bushels of wheat. The stra land produced fifty-eight and nineteen bushels, respectively, and the same land manured produced eighty-sia bushels of corn and twenty-two bush els of wheat. The results show thai while straw is not as valuable a fer tilizer as manure, it will produce s considerable increase in yield and should be used fresh where availably rather than allowed to go to waste. Alfalfa For Hogs. One acre of alfalfa on rich alluvia! soil will carry ten hogs during sum mer. The alfalfa and a little corn aE along and more corn at the finishini period will make very cheap pork Ten bushels of corn will by the aid ol the alfalfa ciake a 200-pound ho at eight months of age. The wora thing about it is that it has not besi, shown that alfalfa can be raised oi all type3 of land. A Natural Buzzer. Laura was playing on the porch with her dolls, but was greatly dis tressed by the song of a locust in a tree near by. Running to the tree she called, impatiently, "Ring off, bird!" Work in the Fall Means a Long and ' Glorious Season Next ; Year ,-: In October, when leaves anct flowers ire dying, when Nature is closing her eyes for her long sleep, it is only those of experience who cry: "This is tho best time to start a garden." There is always a setback to a gar den started in the spring, because it is not long enough from th ''nio growth begins until the hour of bfoom to give many plants their full chance to expand before sending forth their flowers. A plant must almost reach maturity before it blooms, which in deed it only does that it may form seed and thus perpetuate itself to uostcr- lty. To start a garden early is often the secret of success. By preparing the beds and borders in the autumn, digging them out about two feet deep, placing inverted sod in the bettom and finally filling them up with layers of manure, light soil and top-dressing, much time is saved in the spring, when the irresistible not-a-minute-to-lose feeling is in the air. Besides, there is something about a well-settled bed that flowers like better than one that is quite new. If in the. spring these autumn-prepared beds require extra mulching or ferti lizing, it is a matter that is very eas ily attended to. When the beds and borders are made, the garden should be cleared of all surplus material. The roots of strong weeds should be lifted, and a light dressing of manure spread over the places that are destined to bo lawn the following spring. The October Delineator. The fact that the Government has decided that all imitation whiskey must be so labeled indicates its ap preciation of the further fact that a large amount of overcredulous peo ple are still at large in this country. Washington IleralTl. ONE KIDNEY GONE, But Cared After Doctors Said There Was No Hope. Sylvanus O. Verrill, Milford, Me., says: "Five years ago a bad injury paralyzed me and affected my kid neys. My back hurt me terribly, and the urine was badly disordered. Doctors said my right kidney was practically dead. They said I could never walk again. I read of Doan's Kidney Pills and began using them. One box made me stronger and freer from pain. I kept on using them and In three months was able to get out on crutches, and the kidneys were acting better. I im proved rapidly, discarded the crutches and to the wonder of my friends was soon completely cured." Sold oy all dealers. 50 cents a box. Foster-Milburn Co., Buffalo, N. Y. You take a good deal of risk if you buy white lead without having abso lute assurance as to its purity and quality. You know white lead is of ten adulterated, often misrepresented.
