AND G 1 V K THE O O.L 0 H E D PEOPLE A N ENGINE. Now that the town has a new lire engine, we insist that to operate it effectively it wili be necessary to organ ixe a company to handle it. Let the town elect a riruCuivH, and let that man be- Mr. Clarence La tham, let him select as many good men :.s he will need to assist him, men. who will take an interest in it, and the engine will be a good in vestment, but if it is to be laid up to rot as the old one was, so that when needed it will.be out of order, we had as well not have it. When the sullicieiit .number of men has been seen re i to handle the engine, then, let some good men organize a hook and laddejjnmpany to, back them in), oftenyftio west work at a lire is done by the ladder company. Last, but not least, put the old en gine in good thape and give it to the colored people. They are interested in the protection of. the town, they have property to protect and we are sure they will organize a good com pany, some of them are the best and most willing fire-fighters we have. Do these things and Plymouth will be protected and the insurance rate will be greatly reduced. 'Twas A Glorious Victory. There's rejoicing iu Fedora, Teun. As announced last week, the new fire engine was given a test on Wed nesday to see jtmt what it. would do. The engine was piaced on the dock at the foot of Washington street and 200 feet of hose attached, a button and a stream was thrown up and down Water street for quite a drst ane and over any building in tltat seci ion. So far so good, but it was claim ed that it would throw the same stream thiough 1000 feet of hose, so 10OU feet ot hose was attached which run up Washington street 10 Third street, but the engine furnish ed the water in abundance at that distance, a stream being thro'wn on the Roanoke Hotel. The engine was then taken to the new artesian'well corner Washing ion and 4th streets where it was connected and a stream thrown all oyer that section . lletti ruing to the river in the af ternoon three tets of hose were put on and as many streams started, demonstrating the fact that this engine can be utilized on the burn ing builning and hIso on buildings that are exposed. All in all the 'Hampton." as its name signifies, is a great success and our people "are pleased to know that at last they have some protection Thanks to Mayor ISprnill and his board of Courrcilmen who had the nerve to make an effort. One of the most pleasant events of the season was an ice cream sup per given on Tuesday night, Aug., IT, at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mis. M. T. Jordan. No trou ble or expense was spared by this popular young couple to make it an en?ovable event to each guest. The large grove surrounding the house was lighted by many lamps and larf terus, taoles were scattered here and there, while chairs, swings, ham mocks end rustic seats- invited the weary to rest. At about 7:30 the large crowd began to assemble ami soon the merry young people j were Hitting about among the trees, all seeming to have a line time. Ice cream, lemonade, cake and fruits were served to those who .desired it, and thenit was announced that a box of candy was to be voted to the prettiest you tig lady present, and a tie presented to the young man holding the greatest number of ice cream tickets. After voting and counting tickets, the candy was pre sented by majority of votes to Miss Gertie Miztill and the tie was pre sented by Mrs. Jordan to Mr. J. J. Mizell. Both seemed to be very much appreciated and as the .hour Was late the merry croud departed, thanking Mr. and Mrs. Jordan for a very pleasant evening. The Crime Of Idleness.
