Hilliard spent last Sunday in Raleigh. Mr. H. L. Phelps, Jr., of Creswell was in town Wednesday Mr. G. L. Davenport of Eden ton has been in the city this week. Mr. L VV. Shugar leave to-day for an extended visit t Penmar, Pa. . The Episcopal Sunday School enjoyed it annual pic-nic at Rae's Beach on Friday last. Mr. Tucker of Whitakers is visiting his daughter, Mrs. P. E. Davenport on Main St. here. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bateman of Elnlhurst Farm, near Roper were in town shopping Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. S. F- Darden and Mr. J. W. Darden left Tues day night for a visit to Wilming. ton. Mr. Luther Harrison of New York is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W- Harrison, near town. Miss Winona Gurganus of Hoke is in town visiting her sister, Mrs. Edmond Harrison on Third St. Chapel Hill School will open Aug. 14th, with.Prin. E. H. Liverman Prin. and Miss Jessie . Hurley and little daughter, Dorothy, left Friday night last for Haw River, they being called there on account of the death of Mrs, Hurley's sister, of that place. Mr. Ottis Jackson ofFarmville is here this week making Dre parations to put up a modern barber shop. This shop will be located at Mr. Van B. Martin's former office in the Blount building. For Relief of Flood 'Suf ferers. At the reque&t of Mr. E. E. Britton, Chairman of the State Relief Committee, Mayor Spruill called a mass meeting at the Court House Monday night for the purpose of raising funds for the relief of the flood sufferers in Western North Carolina. Owing to bad weather only a small crowd assimbled but the Mayor appointed E D Carstar phen, Z V Norman and J K Reid a committee to solicit contribu tions, and by Tuesday night $125.00 had been raised.
