A Word to Our Patrons.
We know that we are giving
you one of the best local weekly
papers published in this or any
other section, and we know that
you appreciate our efforts. But
expenses must be met, and when
we tell you that, owing to the
increased price of paper our
margin on your paper, before we
print itr amounts to less than
twenty-five cents for the entire
year, we ieei sure tnat you need
no further insistence upon our
part to assure your paying up
promptly.
Washington County and the
people in it were never in as
good financial condition as now.
No one is too poor to take and
pay for his county paper, and he
owes it to himself and his family
to do this. .
What would you and outsiders
think of Washington County if
it had no paper in it ? And yet
this must happen unless you do
your full part by it.
We are trying to keep the pa
per going to you at the same old
price while you are getting fancy
prices for what you have to sell,
but we cannot hold out unless
every dollar due us is kept paid
up.
We are sure that this state
ment of fact is all that is neces
sary upon our part, and that you
will do the rest.

County Loses a Valued
Citizen and Family.
Mr. W. M. Bond. Jr., with his
young wife and little son left
Monday for Denver. Col., where
they will remain for at least
some months.
Mr. Bond, who is the eldest
son of. Judge W. M. Bond of
Edenton, came to Plymouth up
on obtaining his law license
about eight years g6, at the age
of twenty-one years, and cast
his lot with our people, since
which time he has gained a most
enviable reputation among the
legal fraternity of this entire
section, and built up a law prac
tice that has excited the wonder
and admiration of older and more
experienced lawyers.
No man ever gained more or
closer triends within so snort a
time, and it is with most sincere
regret of our people that, owing
to threatened pulmonary trouble
Mr. Bond leaves us in an effort
to regain his usual good health
in the dry, bracing atmosphere
of the Middle-West.
Mr. and Mrs. Bond were ac
companied on their loner trip by
Mrs. Bond's father, Dr. J. H.
McMullan, and sister, Miss Mil
dred, the first to watch after
his physical well being, and the
latter to cheer and comfort her
sister while among strangers.
' Mr- Bond hopes to return to
us within a few months, and we
trust that he may be able to do
so and that his health may be
speedily and permanently re
stored. In the meantime the
heartiest best wishes of our en

Twelfth Anniversary Cele
bration.
Mr. and Mrs. B.E.Stephenson
celebrated the twelfth anniver
sary of their wedding by delight
fully entertaining a vast number
of their friends at their home on
Washington Street Wednesday
evening from 9 till 12 o'clock.
The electric light plant being
out of commission, oil lamps and
candles were arranged in a most
effective manner, and the light
problem was solved.
As the guests arrived they
were met at. the door bylfrs.
Thos. L. Smith and Mr. Linwood
Hassell, and were passed oh to
the receiving line, which was
composed of Mr. and Mrs. B. E.
Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. Con
way Newman, Miss Irene Muse
of Norfolk, Mr. L. 0- Miller of
Richmond, and Mr. P. B. Tom
linson. The gift room, Which was in
charge of Mrs. J. T. Outlaw, was
decorated in green and white.
and if the dainty, filmy linen
which was scattered around in
harmonious profusion is fitting
evidence of the esteem in which
the host and hostess are held,
their popularity is most enviable.
Delicious fruit punch, contain
ed in a capacious receptacle at
the rear end of the hall and
guarded by Misses Mary Smith
and Gladys Hornthab was served
in a most bewitching style. The
popularity of . this beverage was
made apparent by the frequent
visits it received from most every
- , one present.

The drawing room was pleas"
ingly decorated in a color scheme
of white and green, and the soft,
sweet tones of the pano, under
the skillful touch of Mrs. R. W.
Johnston, emanated from the
interior and carried the spirit of
the occasion to every nook and
corner of the building.
The dining-room, presided over
by Mrs. E. R. Jackson, Misses
Blanche Gilbert, Blanche Spruill
and Mamie VanNortwick, car
ried out the color scheme of the
drawing-room, and the luscious
delicacies which were served ad
ded harmony to the occasion.
A magnificent cake, done up
in a most superb manner, and
containing pieces of metal which
were supposed to decide the des
tiny of those finding them, was
cut into innumerable slices by
the joyous crowd. Mrs Conway
Newman unearthing a ring, Mrs.
Nathan Tucker's slice disclosing
a bachelor's button, and that of
Mrs. E. R. Jackson revealing a
tiny thimble. This number of
the program provided an unusual
method of pleasure for those
attending.
At eleven o'clock Dr. B. H.
Gilmer, in a flight of oratory in
formed the gathering that Hon.
Van B. Martin would furnish a
timely toast for the occasion
Mr. Martin ended his remarks
by quoting :
"There .is a word of grief, . the
sounding taken ;
There is a word bejevreled "with
bright tears;
It's the saddest word that food lipa
have ever spoken
It's a little word that Breaks the
chain of years,
It's utterance must ever bring e-
tuotion,
vit s crystal memories can never
- die '
It's known on every land and on
every ocean;
It's called 'Good Bye.' "
Messers Louis and Lloyd Hor-
ton held the attention of the
gathering by a number of vocal
renditions of "rag-time."
Those partaking of the hospi
tality of Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson
were, Misses Mary Smith, Gladys
