Halsey our new cor oner-elect of Roper made us a pleasant call while in townTues. Mr. L. C. Nurney left Sunday for Norfolk, where he will enter St. Vincents hospital for treat ment. The ladies of theM. E. Church held a very successful fancy-work sale and supper on Tuesday evening. Mrs. Geo. S. Swain of Suffolk, Va. is in the city the guest of her parents Mr. Mrs, C. V. Norman on third street. Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Nor folk are visiting Mrs. Williams' parents, Dr. and Mrs. T. B. Wolfe, on E. Main Street. Messers. T. J. Simmons and J. A. Bratten, Jr. made a canoe cruise up Roanoke Sunday after noon last. They report a strenu ous outing. i Mr. A. L. Saturday last at about 11.30 c 'clock Masters Thomas Basnight Durard and Willie Leary were in an up stairs room at the home of Mr. W. T, Basnight, Holly Neck this County, looking at pictures belonging to young Bas night. Master Herbert Hassell, a chum of the other boys, who was down stairs was invited up by his friends, and on entering the room, wilne .Leary, age 11 years playfully pointed a 22 calibre re volver at'him, and not knowing it was loaded, pu'led the trigger The bullet entered the right eye of young Hassell and he fell to the floor mortally wounded. The boys becoming frightened hurried from the room and went to the older people and informed them of the dreadful accident.
