IJttv.".:".T-y ' THE ROANOKE BEACON C V. W. AUSBON Editor and Publisher. C. S. AUSBON PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. Plymouth, N. C.f Friday, March 9, 1917. THE NEW COURT HOUSE THE architects not having fin ished the drawings no action was taken by the County Com missioners Monday in regard to the proposed new Court House. However, we hear it being talk ed that th?. building should not cost to exceed 3:10,000.00. We do net know what effect this talk nay have upon the members of the board, but if it has any, we implore- you, gentleman, to atop and think. Unless we can have something creditable let us not build at all. Tyrrell County tried a cheap house and one of their leading attorneys has said tht we now have a better house than theirs, if theirs is brick. Then we must have tvv houses cither built together or separat ely and our county pride should demand what we can be proud of and not humiliated by. Our county is growing, and we should build more for the future than for the present, and in our opin ion based upon the Court houses in other counties that we have visited, and their cost, we are frank, to sav that we do not be lieve $'0,000.00 will build what our people will be satisfied with. Even eight years ago when this question was before the Legisla ture, Mr.C. W. Snell. then our Representative, made speech be fore the commit tee-and told them that 830,000.00 was josufftcent and would only bean opening wedge if they attempted It, and labor and material has advanc ed at least 50 per cent since then Of course we know our officers being continually harassed by people of di If ereht opinions con cerning such an outlay of capital, many of whom have no real' con ception of the cost of such build ings, but taking biased heresay for facts and continually preach ing it to others, and they, our Commissioners) wishing only to served the best interest of their people, hardly know what to do. And we would suggest this, that they take a few days off and go in a body to several different counties that have recently erect ed new court houses, learn all about the conveniences, perman ency, cost, etc-, and then come home, pay themselves off for their time, expenses, & etc., and let the contract in accord with the experience they have gained by the investigation. They will then at least have the conspla. tjon, of knowing that thev have done all in their power to serve their county, and have not spent its money on guess work, whether it sounds big or little.
