A year ape. the lee tiers of the .Chautauqua me • . mopt >• t together and decided trial, t ijar, uuuy.'.a was •'big enough mid good enough to have its own plays and not use Broadway's .-■ s. i"hey there fore decided to o.fer a prize of $3,000 for an ox ir.il play of American life vr iii by an Vnieri can author. Mere th :i • 0 plays were submitted, and i.ev careful Veading of the: ; V judges, ‘‘Crossed Vv s” iected as the winner of the puz.-. It was ■produced by a comp cast and presented before a P re ai'.iienee ©f critics before the < nir.g of the Chautauqua season, it proved to be an overwhelming success and just what was wanted tc 1 produc tion as the Chautauqua play. The author of the winning play is Richaid A. Fu. ' who is "the author of sever::! < " plays and ■poems. A poem of his entitled “The Day” was public v.-l during the war and was much <■ ;■ ussed in literary and patriotic circles, being classed with In Flanders Fields” as one of the best poems written during the war. In “Crossed Wires” Mr. Purdy tells a story that comes into the actual experience of many Ameri can boys. His principal characters are two boys wi n ambition. One of them wants to be a newspaper editor*, but instead is forced to run the dry .goods baldness vhie-n his father started. .’.lie other wants to be a dry goods merchant, but finds himself forced by liis father into being a newspaper man. They realize that they are “Crossed Wires” and make up their minds that they will get the wires un crossed so that they v ork. How they go about accomplishing theia purpose forms a story that is full of laughable situations and amus ing characters from by-inning to end. Incidentally they both tind that life is not complete without romance, and before the final cur tain falls, wedding bells a. . in the air for two happy couples. r An interesting fact in connection with the company of actors that ia to present this play is that they are all members of the famous Provinc-etown Player:; of New York. For eight rears they have had their own theatre, where they have produced now plays . chiefly fey American authors. It is quite appropriate that they should be seen in the first ^ American play written especially for Chautauqua.
