New Bank Makes
Splendid Opening
The Branch Banking and Trust Com
pany, of Wilson, Opened Here
Yesterday Morn ng to Large
Num jer of Depositors.
In spite of a disagreeable rain
that immediately followed the
worst sleet and freeze that has
visited our community this win
ter, the opening of the Branch
Banking and Trust Company was
warmly and enthusiastically wel
comed by a great number of our
people. A steady stream of de
positors made their way through
the muddy, slippery streets to
the teller's window to make de
posits throughout the day.
Mr. H. D. Bateman, president
of the organization; remained in
the lobby of the bank and greet
ed the visitors, many of whom
remember him as principal of
the old Free School which closed
about twenty years ago to make
for a more progressive step in
education.
At present the bank here is
supervised by Mr. R. E. Harris,
cashier, a young man of splendid
appearance, and who is credited
with about fifteen years of suc
cessful banking experience. He
is assisted in his dutie3 by Mr.
W. M. Button, who has been i
dentified with this institution for
about six years. The bank will
open for business at nine o’clock
each banking morning and will
close at three o’clock in the af
noon. This branch will be con
ducted along the same lines that
have made such a huge success
of the parent bank in Wilson,
which is considered one of the
largest in North Carolina and
the very largest in Eastern Car
olina. A branch is also conduct
ed at Bai ey. Approximately se
ven thousand depositors are ser
ved by the organization.
A statement as of December
31,1924, appears on our lastpa^e
which reveals a capital stock and
surplus of a half million dollars
and deposits of almost three mil
lion, with bill's payable appear
ing as nothing.
This bank has been appointed
as receiver of The United Com
mercial Bank, and a vigorous ef
fort will be made to clear up the
business of that institution as
rapidly as possible.

Sudden Change
Tuesday Plymouth basked in
Spring like weather until about
tour o’clock in the afte. noon.
Coatless men could be seen
meandering around the streets
according to what mood they
might have been in enjoying t’ae
pleasant atmosphere of what
was termed a perfect day. A
bout four in the afternoon, how
ever, a sudden burst of wind
coming from a Northerly direct-*
ion put them in a slightly dif:
ferent mood. As time wore on
the thermometer began to de
scend and a chilly rain set in,
By nightfall most everyone was
huddled around a stove or snug
ly wrapped ir. heavy and numer
ous garments.
The next morning that Spring
like weather was history. Many
water pipes in homes were froz
en and a frantic scramble was
made to outwit the other fellow
in first securing the services of
a plumber. P ople who had not
been seen to walk down town
for ages were laboriously pound
ing cement sidewalks, many
were profusely pleading with
g irage men t o devise some
means of getting their cars in a
humor to perform required dut
ies, trucks were bumping over
streets in efforts to get sensible
thoughts into the vitas of re
fractory cars. Asthmatic snorts
of Fords and others could be
heard int rmittently. As the
day progressed the condition did
not improve, and by night tne
rain and sleet had covered the
streets with a mantle of beauti
ful but treacherous ice.
To those who were safely pro
tected behind the large plate
giaTiS windows of drug stores,
cafes, the post office and other
p aces it was an amusing ,'xper
ie ce for them to witness the
painful < fforts of pedestrians to
make their precarious way over
frozen streets. Many displayed
emarkable acrobatic ability in
negotiating the distance from
A. L. Owens store to the post
office, and when once they had
accomplished this difficult feat
thev were rather reluctant to
fempt the god of chance again.
No casualties occured that we
know of, and yesterday morning
the mercury had ascended ap
preciably, though Juniter did
not seem to be altogether ap
pea ed.

Sad Death
One of the saddest deaths that

for a great while was the passing

Mrs. Harrison had been feeble

member of the Methodist church
and Sunday school and was great

knew her.
She leaves a husband and one
son and uvo sisters, Mesdames

ard several relatives in Bethel,
Not f'Ik and Portsmouth. She

acquitted herself very creditably
in that capa< ity.
The funeral service was held
in the home at two o’clock yes

the interment was made in the
