I p .. . - --- -- THE ROANOKE BEACON Published Every Friday in Plymouth, North Carolina C. V. W. AUSBOX,.Owner J. F. AUSBOX,.Publisher Walter H- Pur a more.Associate Editor $1.50 A YEAR T5* SIX MONTHS Address all communications to the Roanoke Beacon, Plymouth, N. C. Entere l as secj.id-class mail matter at the Postoffica Plymouth, Nor h Carolina, uuder the act of March 3rd, 1887, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1929 Home And Farm Agent Work Time and time again the people in Washington county have demon strated the fact that they are intensely interested in retaining the offices of the home demonstration agent and farm agent for this county. And each . ime they have fought for the right and proper thing. These offices are becoming to be indispensible to each and every county in this and other states A review of the home demonstration agent's work with the fifteen clubs in the county will bear out these statements There are three things that stand out conspicuously in. the work done by Miss Coving ton They are educational, social and moral training that are caught in the various clubs in the county. These ideals are continually press ed to the front in every meeting that is held. In editing the reports of these meetings as they are sent for publi cation, the editor finds that nearly, if not every time, they are opened with devotional services usually composed ot singing and prayer. Also these articles are fraught with demonstrations and lectures made by the demonstration agent, and the talks and other educational work done by the individual members Then again, hardly a report of these meetings etners the Beacon office wherein there is not a line, sentence, or paragraph containing information in regards to the inval uable social qualities that arc so conspicuous in each meeting. This small county as well as many other counties should be com mended on the activities of its home agent and farm agent. As the farm agent seldom has group meetings there is less reports of his work that are filed with this office, and so the Beacon editor has to judge his work by the verbal reports that he hears while on the streets which are very favorable. This is a good work. Two Candidates For Mayor Should it become a reality that R. P. Walker and W. L Whitley announce themselves as candidates for the moyorality of Plymouth in ihe coming town election, it would be difficult for the voter to choose between the two as both men are amply capable of filling the office. Mayor Walker has already demonstrated his ability as chief executive of this municipality during his two years in office. Yet. Mr. Whitley ^-endowed with all the capabilities that would make his services ben efical A* for the councilmen, it would be well if they decided to announce theif candidacies again as they have so faithfully guided the destiny of this government for the past two years. Many achievements mark the administration of these men. More Water Pressure What this t6wn needs is more pressure on its water. The lack of this came near causing the loss of a dwelling on Main street this week. The firemen were there with the hose and with it coupled to the hydrant and water was hardly forced through the pipe with pressure enough to get it up on top of the house. This needs remedying. Nash county farmers are placing orders for a car of pure bred Jersey heifers. Based on conditions at this time, the outlook for tobacco growers this year is not favorable. Gaston County fanners plan to have home gardens on nearly all farms in the county this year. Raspberry culture will be started in Avery County this year by boy; belonging to the 4-H clubs. One shipment of 1,500 pounds of sweet clover seed has been re ceived by farmers of Anson County. The lespedeza acreage of Iredell county will be doubled this season according to orders placed by farmers for the seed. A two-day extension school for farmers and farm women is schedul ed for Selma in Johnston County. February 14 and 15 Recleaning and treating of tobacco seed is a common practice throughout the bright belt area of eastern Carolina this winter. .- B Cotton will likely sell for satisfactory prices this fall if the acreage is not increased and the usual average yields are secured. The best varieties of com for different sections of North Carolina are given in agronomy information circular number 25 which may be had free from the State College of Agriculture, 1 NOTICE OF SALE FOR TAXES The following property will be sold at the Court House Door at 12, o'clock noon, Monday, Ma-ch the 4th, 1929, for delinquent Street Assessment Tax of 1927 M.
