So much has been said abeut the sites that 2re ereJ ; or s h : the Beacon and Pews has made a*1 borough investigation and have learned that the following conditions realy exist. In gathering the information, ail prejudices has been thrown aside and the facts, as they were found are hereby presented: At . ; . . vueting o; the Board of Education. Monday, July 1, the Owens property was tentatively purchased under the conditions that Mr. Martin, who w as presenting it for sale, develops the Andrew Jackson street and built another street to run into Rankin street, also that it would be possible to build a sewerage, at not to exceede a total cost of $1,000. There were two other sites offered for sale at this meeting of the educators; one by W R. Hampton, known as the Stubbs prooerty and one by T. C, Burgess, known as the Carstarphen property. Com parative figures on the three sites show the following: The Stubbs property is within 40 feet of a fire hydrant, the Carstarphen property within 400 and the Owens property 767; the Stubbs property is on the sewerage line while both the Owens aud Carstarphen property are about equal distances from a sewerage; the Carstarphen property containing about 4 acres with a guarantee of good outlets, has been offered for $1,600, the Stubbs property contain iug about 4 acres with good outlets $2,250, and the Owens property, containing about 5 acres agreeing to the requirements of the Board at $2 500; in the minutes of the Board meeting. Captain C. E. Mizell is stated as having made a brief survey and found that 85 per cent of the people dislike the Stubbs site; the Stubbs property is on the West side of Washington street while both the Owens and Carstar phen property is on the East side. Taking Washington street as a ce: t:r there ere 133 Negro homes on the East side while there are only 92 Negro hemes on the West side, there is an average of 228 pupils attending the school whe live on the East side while there are 125 on the West side; there is an average of 107 homes represented in the school from the East side, while there is an average of 58 homes on the West side represented.
