Many Families; Local
Merchants Cooperate
There were 22 poor and needy
families in Washington county that
received help out of the Christmas
Box. The box was filled to overflow

faces of those who received a bas
ket was enough to pay anyone for
^ the trouble, money and effort ex

Each of the 22 baskets contained
the following other than clothing
and toys:
One ham, 12 pound sack of flour
oranges, apples, mixed nuts, cheese,

grits, syrup, soup, bread and cake.
“The local merchants deserve
quite a bit of credit for cooperating
with us in the manner that _ they
did,” said J. P. Sutton, chairman
of the committee from the Cham

on a single local merchant who
failed to cooperate with us to the

| in the interest of the peanut industry
in spite of the highest t aiff in history,
the price is lower than it has been
for years. As a matter of fact, the
peanut industry is sick. This is due
to a combination of causes and must
ce remedied.
It will interest you to know that
our Representative, Honorable Men
alcus Lankford, has arranged to
send representatives from the United
States Department of Agriculture,
the Farm Board and experts from
Blacksburg to this meeting. These
representatives will come with all of
the information the government has
on the subject ann it is believed that
a united frontalongwith them, some
ideas will be developed that will help
the industry.
You are urged to be present and
we appeal to you to do everything
you possibly can in your section to
interest everybody in the industry
to attend. To send invitations to
each of our farmers, manufactures,
cleaners and shellers is almost out
of the question, but we feel with
the aid of a representative group of
our peanut people throughout the
section we should foe able to make a
showing. Along with our individual
efforts we propose to use the press
for all it is worth in bringing this
meeting to the attention of every
one in the territory and in every
way possible impress upon them
the importance of the meeting.

TO SPEND $200,090 ON
SURVEY ROANOKE RIVER
VIEW TO CONTROL FLOODS
The United States Government
will spend the sum of $200,000 for
a survey and investigation of Roan
koe river with the view of controlling
its floods and investigating its water
power possibilities, according to
Congressman Lindsey Warren, who
was today notified by the Board
of Engineers that they had approved
the preliminary report of Major W.
A. Snow, District Engineer, and
had sent the matter back to him for
a complete project study. The inve
stigation Will require many months.
After his next report,if still favor
able, Congress will be called on tc
appropriate many million of dollars
for the work. Mr. Warren statec
I that this was in addition to the n i\ ■
' igation project for Roanoke rivei
which will be included in the Riven
and Harbors bill.
The preliminary report for the
flood control of Tar river was un
favorable, but Mr. Warren today
requested the Chief of Engineers tc
send it back to Major Snow foi
further investigation, as a disastrous
flood has occured since he filled his
report. Congressman Warren requ
ested that public hearings be had on
this newly discovered evidence at
Rocky Mount and Greenville.
The bills for the flood control ol
Roanoke and Tar rivers were int
roduced by Mr. Warren three years
ago and pissed by Congress.
Congressman John H. Kerr, through
whose district both rivers also run,
is actively interested and rendering
full co-operation. Excessive and
unprecented floods of the two rivers
' have made farming along their banl<
quite precarious. The expenditure
of $2,00,000 for investigation alone
f Roanoke river is one of the lar
gest appropriations for that purposs
on any southern rivers, and natur
ally Mr. Warren is quite pleased.

TELLS OF MAKING GOOD

me to try the wilt resistant kind.
Miss Covington ordered the seed(
