AN L THE WASHINGTON COUNTY NEWS Published Every Friday in Plymouth, North Carolina LEE ROY HARRIS,.Publisher and Editor sM.no a yi<;ah tr»e six months For Counties Other Than Washington, Martin, and Tyrrell $2.00 ft YEAR $1.00 SIX MONTHS Address all communications to the Roanoke Beacon. Plymouth, N. C. --^ Entered as second-class mail matter at the Postoffic#, Plymouth, North Carolina under the act of March 3rd. 1SS7. FRIDAY, JUNE 27. 1930 Fair Play! A few times recently, the editor of the Beacon and News has been approached by members of the Republican party with the question of wheather or not he would use material furnished by this organization in Washington county. In answer to this question we w®uld say that the Beacon and News is the property of the property of the people and not the editor. There is only one column that I reserve and that is this column. The news columns of the Beacon and News is open to all of its readers whether they be Democrat or Republican or what not and all of its readers are urged to feel that they are at liberty to use them freely to express their views to the citizens of Washington county. It is true that I am a Democrat and will support to the fullest ex tent the Democrat party in all of its endeavors, but I am not narrow and selfish and I not only offer the columns of the Beacon and News to the other party, but I urge them to use it. An Apology! The Beacon and News owes someone an apology, either Mr, Ernest Hicks or the Plymouth School board, yet we hesitate to make it as we are tempted to feel that we were not in error. At the time of the writing of the editorial last week, we had been authentically informed that Mr. Hicks did not have a superintendents certificate and infor mation did not reach Plymouth untii Friday that he had succeeded in getting a certificate. The Beacon and News does not ask for the credit of ascertaining the validity of Mr. Hicks certificate, it was through the efforts of Mr. P. H. garden, chairman of the local school board that a record of the questioned certificate was received here. The serial number of the certificate is 120878 and does not expire until 1933. Now as to the rumor of abolishing athletics in Plymouth High School, we have a statement by Mr Hicks to the effect that all pos. sible is going to be done for the girls and boys towards giving them good athletics. He has been making a study of the situation and has suggested a man for the position of athletic coach who we are in formed is very capable. He is apparencly very anxious to promote athletics in the school. We are very sorry we made the error if it was one. and we wish to extend a hand of welcome to Mr. Hicks also we bow in gratitude to our very efficenr school board. ARE YOU LIKE Micawber? Do you remember Wilkins Micawber who was always “waiting for something to turn up"—and nearly starving in the meantine? Micawber was only a crea ture of Dickens’ imagination; but he has his counterparts in real life-good men, men of talent and wit, but waiting for Opportunity to send an engraved invita tion.
