There are still a few who want to arouse the extremes in men. They cherish a story that hints on the vulgar, and they delight in arousing the passions for the things on the lower side of li • To do so is certainly not the proper function of the newspaper. The best man is he who does most to uplift his fellow man. The newspaper should in spire the higher thoughts in life, strengthen the moral fabric, build friendships between people, regardless of their political, religious or social standings. And then the things that matter in life today are too often pushed to one side and hidden. The faith ful performance of duty, the unselfish devotion to truth and honor, the sacrificial promotion of great causes, the Church, education and invention far out weigh all sports and sensational feats that might oc cur in the community. Courts Entering the High Places The courts are beginning to face the mammoth task of punishing crime in the higher places. The latest case for approval is the conviction of Mason VV. Gant, the clerk of the Guilford County Superior court. Gant had, for many years, been one of the leading and most highly respected citizens of that county, but when a shortage was found in his ac count, he was sentenced to the penitentiary for ten years by Judge Devin. His downfall evidently began when easy money began to reach his hands and he diverted it to the wrong pocket. Pension checks for Confederate soldiers and their widows passed from the State Treasurer to him for distribution, and when a soldier or widow would die. he would continue their names on the pension list and when the checks came in, he forged their names and cashed the checks for himself. He did not steal from the living but from the dead, the State being the loser. With the courts tightening up all along the line, people who see other folks' money will think of the jails and roads as well as stealing the property of others. We must keep temptations a long ways off and punish crime severely if we are to raise our stand ard of honor and truth. Judge Lindsey Rightfully Denounced The Devil is always trying to dictate government business and society. He is now trying to regulate marriage. He has his emissaries out writing books, advising men and women to prostitute a while before entering upon the solemn vows of marriage. Bishop Manning of New York, was entirely right in denouncing Judge Ben Lindsey s book on com panionate marriage, which advanced a theory that has proved false and dangerous in every age of the world's history. The theory is one that the laws of every civilized and Christian land on the entire globe strictly forbids. Judge Lindsey’s theory is one that has never been able to rise above the low animal kingdom. The churchman might have gone too strong in denouncing the judge's character, but he can never go too strong in denouncing his creed. Making for Prosperity and Happiness Farmers in one section of Eastern North Carolina are traveling the safe road to prosperity. There passed a destructive storm through the section which destroyed the corn of several farmers. When gather ing tirre came the farmers of the adjoining com munities did not carry all their corn to their own barns, but hauled to their less fortunate neighbors' barns until all had corn in plenty. Now all are happy. That is the spirit that makes for happiness and prosperity. Should Have Shared the Profits 1' the tobacco companies had been willing to limit their profits by half this year, there wouldn't have bien a bank failure in the entire tobacco belt. Chil dren would not have to wander around half-starved and in rags. We need not expect general prosperity when a few people make so much and the masses have to go hungry and clothe themselves in rags. The tobacco companies could cut their profits half and then grow gorgeously rich. Tenant Farming Doomed Some people predict that our present tenant sys tem of farming is doomed. So far as we understand the situation, it will be a good thing, because the land lord and the tenant are doomed unless the sys tem is changed. As it now is, the future is very un certain for both the owner of farm land and the tenant who cultivates it. Just at this time, the land lord is puzzled as to how he L \ mg to pay his taxes and the tenant is puzzled as to Lew he is going to get something to eat next year. It is a case that puzzles both sides, and one of the worst features to the whole thing is that both sides feel a bit sore at the other. We have now come to the place where the tenant might as well content himself with less: and the landlord must stop trying to force all money crops into the system for the tenant to handle. Every tenant should be required to raise a large portion of his food on the farm, and when he does he will pay out and the land lord will not go broke. Don’t Hate the Land Good investors buy on a low market, and poor in vestors buy when prices are high. The inherent rights of the masses are too import ant to let them slip into the hands of a few. Farmers, hold your land, and be the king of your own soul and body in the coming days. It is certain that the land owner is eventually going to boss the job. Your home is more important now than your car. Cling to the home; don't hate the land. NOTICE OF SALE Under and by virtue of authority contained in a certain Mortgage ex ecuted by K. S.
