A Christmas Prayer Heavemy Father. the C’lv's’mas Hay arrives, we come to thee humbled in heart and mind, praving of thy goodness to teach us to be thank til for what we have. Help us, not tor ourselves, but that we might help those less fortunate than we are at this the one sere n of the year. Turn our thoughts from our gr coy wants to those of us who have met with ad versity and now need help. Let 11s make the age old w ih. ! Merry Christmas To Ml Mankind, come 1 rue. Mart, the Most Uncertain Creature What is wrong with the times and what is out of balance? After hearing much grumbling and complaining about this thing and that thing being wrong and this fellow and that fellow doing wrong, we honestly believe it would only be fair and honest to look around and find the trouble and then frankly tell the truth about it and not be so much inclined to criticise and complain which must be awfully tiring to the Father of light and life. If we will arise at the first sound of the cock's crowing in the morning we will find bright stars -hooting their shafts of silver light down on a sleeping, resting and peaceful world. The stars soon surrender their watch to the rising sun, the light of day which brings out the chirping birds and beasts of the field that start another busy day in quest of food which is answered with an abundance from the providence of God. Their lives are happy ones and the birds and beasts express themselves in songs and roar. Soon the sun is pouring out its light, calling all mankind to behold the beauty of a new day. It gives them light and power that they might move along the paths of progression that will finally lead them onward and upward to a better life. The earth is filled with pure air to cooperate with the beautiful sunshine in giving us health and strength. We find all things answering the divine plan of na ture which makes them all respond to a perfect law except man. As the day passes on and all creatures are looking for rest and refreshment, they are enabled to look upon the gold in the west with its beaming light to remind us of how good it will be to close a well spent file amid the beauties of heaven. God has kept His every promise. He has sent us folks to pay their debts. We find more young folks in prison today than have been there in any period in American history. 1 he greatest blow to character resulted from a complete selling out for money. ^ (,ung men have climbed to the highest, gallaries and stooped to the lowest cellars for something they crav ed, apparently thinking neither of right nor of wrong. It all goes to show that man is the most uncertain being in all creation: he has the power to disobey while nothing else has. Man has the power to climb every blessing that gives us strength and beauty. But we are still dissatisfied. \\ e want more of our own way. We like to exchange several hours of our rest period for our own hidden pleasures and then surrender a long period of our working hours, trying to get back our wasteful hours of the night before. Is there anything wrong today? It so, what is it? We have a world full of food; a world full of clothes; we are healthy, as a whole. The old globe on which we live and move is going along well. Only two things seem to be short and they are cash and character, the shortage of which can be easily proven. First, we see banks closing, making it impossible for many up or dig down. When he reaches up he finds things that are safe and good for him. When he climbs down, he only finds himself in a helpless condition. I; our pride and vanity have robbed us of our money and weakened our characters, then we must pay the debt. We must reap what we sow. One of the old king- who had sown so oasely had to go to the fields and eat grass with the cattle. We need to be thank ful that we are not brought that low, but we also need to remember that the same God who punished the old king has power over us and we need to keep His law. Time for Real Men What will the country do if everybody withdraw* all h' money from the channels of business? There was a man once who hid his money in the earth and saved it. but the very act itself caused his destruction, because he had done himself nor any one else any good. He said he was afraid to put his m ney out: he loved his money too well: he wor shiped it. Others put their money out for the use cf man. and gave much joy and received much profit in both cash and joy. There is no difference in that day and in this one. Some are trusting and carrying the load: they will come out. Some are scared and suspicious; they are withdrawing and hoarding their cash where moths, rust and robbers go. Their action is positively harm ful to the strained conditions cf the day. Many banks in our State have been forced to close their doors because somebody kindled the spirit of dis trustfulness and made some afraid. \Yk..t v. e need is a spirit of optimism. The same and property that backed our financial institu in prosperous times is behind them today. Our only trouble is the shrinkage in values. All we need to do is hold the tighter, and things will swing back to the good again, making all well. No act can be worse than that of burying the cash of the country, for every time a dollar is buried, busi ness goes a little lower, unemployment figures mount, and the many now hungry and half-clad become more numerous. Our mental attitude needs to be toned up. We should remember that our poor neigh bor is far more important than our hoarded cash, that God is the appraiser of all things. No age in all of our history has given men a great er i pportunity than this one has given. We have the opportunity now to be real men and work the world out i f a bad condition into a better one. What side will we be found on? Now is not only the time for us to count ourselves men; it is time to be real men. Educate Rather Than Legislate The North Carolina Anti-Saloon League is taking the advice of its critics and the liquor folks who say the proper thing to do is educate the people against liquor rather than legislate against it. C. A. Upchurch, superintendent of the League, made 24 speeches in Bertie county recently, speak ing to four thousand school children and 2,000 citi zens in churches. He stressed the effects of alcohol on the nerve centers, on the liver and other organs of the body as well as its narcotic forming habit. The value of good citizenship should be impressed upon all by both home and state and taught that no people who disobey the laws of their country are en titled to the protection of law. Mr. Upchurch says he has never seen better response on any subject or occasion than was shown by the Bertie people, both young and old. This is a step in the right direction. Children should be taught the danger that lurks in alcohol and the destruction that comes from dis obedience. They should be taught that the fun promised by the liquor rabble does not last long, that it injures every part of a man's life, and that it isn't a stimulant but a detriment to human body.
