X. > . under the act •; Congress of March .1, 1879. Friday, January 23. 1931. L j Extravagance Cause for our Troubles \, high a? taxes have been and now are, it is to he admitted tit it we have more to sh. w for our tax money than any we have spent during the past ten ye trs. Our reads, our schools, and our public buildings are all much improved. But our houses have not be; painted, our ditches have neither been deepened or cleared of bushes. Our fences have gone down. We have increased our mortgage debts; we have spent our surplus cash, and now about the only thing we have to show for the money we once had (excepting our tax money) is an old rusty automobile or two in the back yard, which cost us more than all the taxes we ever paid. We do not object to automobiles; we are for tax reduction and against governmental waste. We are for truth, however, and don't care to hear all the blame for our present-day ills charged to the other fellow. Our own waste and extravagance should be considered, for therein lies the greatest cause for our troubles. Causes for Otto Wood's Career Nell Battle Lewis, columnist for the Xews & Ob server, in the life sketch of Otto \\ ood, gives the causes for his criminal career. His widowed mother took up with another man. He made h's home with a group of West Virginia moonshiners where his brain was thoroughly saturated with lawless and murderous talk. At no time in life was he taught to subdue his passions. His first peni tentiary term was served in a Virginia prison for se duction. He was married at one time, but his wife divorced him. He married again and when imprison ed a second time, his second wife divorced him. Up on leaving the |>enitentiary a second time, he did not go to the expense of marrying; he just took a wo man along without ceremony. He stole; he robbed; he killed, he broke out of penitentaries of three states ten times in all. \t the age of 35 years he was shot and killed, leav ing two widows and "a woman . Tow of the three women have a child each; the other has two. Wood's greatest joy in life apparently came when he broke the law. An unfaithful mother, moonshin ing experience and bad company made a bad man. Postponing Revaluation Work The question of revaluing property has been dis missed at length, from mountain to the sea. during recent weeks, and it is hard to say just what pro cedure is the best to follow. Last week, the State Leg islature passed an act postponing the revaluation work until the middle of March or April, 1931. The method of quadrennial assessments which has been followed so long has become a fixed habit, and is. [perhaps, a good plan. However, it might be wise not to adhere strictly to the plan at all times. So far as tax saving is concerned, if incomes and fortunes now escaping tax to a large extent can be brought in the proper link and made to carry their share of the burden, land will feel a freedom that will not con cern the owners so much about the assessment. A new assessment will doubtless leave things just as much out of balance as they are now and result in a considerable money cost. Hope Lies in a Limited Acreage Will farmers rush to the money crop side of far ming this year is still a question that should be given careful study and sober thought. While it would seem that the great loss suffered by the farmer in producing cotton and tobacco during the past two years would cause them to limit their acreage, it is whispered around that the tobacco growers are going in strong for a big crop this year. Coming down to the individual books of each far mer in this county for last year, it is conceded that there was a net loss on the tobacco produced. Many farmers say if they had rested the days they labored in the tobacco field, kept the money they paid for fertilizer, tobacco cloth, wood cutting and the many other necessities connected with raising and harvest ing the crop, they would have more money today than they have got. The question now is. Are we going to try the game over again with a big supply of tobacco on hand and with conditions less favorable for normal purchases by customers? It naturally looks as if the tobacco farmer has about the same chance to get rich by planting a big I acreage to tobacco as a boy has in pulling the lever to a slot machine that is designed and set to rob him. The easiest way to make money growing tobacco this year will be found in a limited acreage and good care of that raised. NOTICE OF SALE North Carolina, Washington County.
