Friday. October, 30, 1931 France and America The visit of Frenchman I.av.il who lias been eating at the United States "great" house recently, must mean that France wants to assure herself hat America will come to her aid in case German shouts "Me and Got" again, or if the Russian grizzly happens to stroll down to sunny France some cold, wintry day. Whatever may be the purpose of the Frenchman's visit, we are bound to say that so far no other coun tries of the wrold have ever been so friendly as the American and French Governments have been. And now we should make a covenant with France, as suring her that we will always be with her when she is in the right. It is proper for good people to stand together, and certainly we will make no covenant with ony body to help them in wrong doing. Laws Passed for Public Safety From Shelby comes the report that a state highway patrolman advised a man driving a mule to a cart on a public road at night that he ought to place a I light on either the mule or the vehicle, for his own protection and the safety of the animal, as well as for the safety of all who passed that way on motor ve hicles. The driver of the mule declined to take the j prei... . m •.-•itl, with the result that a car struck the outfit the same night, killed the mule, and the driver was taken to a hospital seriously injured. There is a law in this state which provides that ve hicles drawn T team and traveling the highways at night carry a light. Many who find it necessary to thus travel at night fail to comply with the law and even condemn it. offering criticism for those whose duty it is to ent tree the law. They apparently fail to appreciate a law which was passed for the protection i i !ic\ th r own life, and that of others. It is another iasP of ignoring one s own safety and at the same time the safety of others. There are other laws, passed for the safety of indi viduals. which frequently tire violated. Take, for in stance. the law against fast and reckless driving, as well as that which requires proper lighting of motor vehicles. Failure to comply with these laws on the part of motorists result in many casualties. And yet folks are prone to complain when an officer “pulls" them for doing things prohibited by law. and which not only places their own life in jeopardy, but the lives of others.- -Sampson Independent. 1 investigating Army-Navy Budgets That congressman who dared to demand an investi gation of the propaganda against reducing army and navy expense i- on the right track. This country has already over-burdened itself try ing to please war lords who are of the opinion that the profession of war is the nation's greatest attain ment. This has gone on until the nation is paying half of all it gets to those who are preparing for war and the other half to those who have been to war. Our worst citizens are those who are always crying, ; ‘‘prepare for war." Our best citizens are those who are praying for peace. Remember the Cotton Association Cotton farmers should remember that the Xorth Carolina Cotton Growers Association is advancing five and one-half cents a pound on middling cotton at this time. The association stores cotton, insures it cheaper than the farmer can, and only charge 4 per cent interest. Remember if the various organizations hold 7,000,000 bales of the present crop of cotton for twelve months and the American people can be taught to make a big reduction in next year's acreage, prices will be much better. Xow is the time to fix the price of the 1932 crop; and. too, we can boost the price of the 1931 crop by ; holding it off the market, if we will only do it.
