limari Poultryman
Caters To Market
-o
There are tricks in all trades, even
in the poultry business says C. P.
Parrish, poultryman of the State
College Extension Service.
The smart poultryman sizes up his
market, and then does his best to
meet the consumer demand. Parrish j
said. For instance, the particular j
community in which he sells may
prefer brown-slielled eggs. In that
case, he would select a breed of chic
kens such as Rhode Island Reds or
Barred Plymouth Rocks. On the
other hand, if the community prefer
red white-shelled eggs, he would keep
such breeds as White Leghorns or
Minorcas.
Then there are tricks in controlling
the inner quality of an egg. When
chickens are turned on green grass,
the yolks of the eggs may become ex
tremely bright in color. Naturally.
poultrymen selling on a market pre
ferring light-colored yolks will have i
to make changes in the feeding pro
gram.
To lighten the yolks, Parrish advise
taking yellow corn out of the flock's
diet and substituting oats, barley or
white corn. Then the amount of time
the birds are on the grass should be
limited. The effect of this change
in diet will show up in the yolk color
within a week.
Some markets are more interested
in uniformity of yolk color than they
are in particular shade of yellow. That
is, Parrish explained, they want eggs
all alike in yolk color, regardless of
whether the color is light or some
what dark.
The best way for the poultry man
to get eggs with yolks of uniform co
lor is to feed a well-balanced all-mash
diet and keep the chickens off the
grass range. However, instead of an
all-mash diet, a poultryman can feed
a grain mixture and laying mash,
provided he uses a grain mixture that
supplies about the same quality of
coloring matter as does the mash.
Fertilizer Mixture
For Tobacco Beds
-o
Two hundred pounds of a 4-8-3
mixture for each 100 square yards of
bed Iras proven most satisfactory for
use on tobacco plant beds, say ex
perts at State College. However, if a
lower grade fertilizer is used, it can
be supplemented with from 50 to 100
pounds of cottonseed meal, provided
the meal is thoroughly mixed with the
soil. All fertilizers should be broad
cast on the bed and thoroughly
mixed with the upper three or four
inches of the soil. In preparing the
bed, be sure that all roots and small
stumps are removed and the soil
broken up finely by using a disk har
row, coulter, or some other suitable
implement.
