Waters, Eddie Getsinger. C. C. Har dison. Durand Keel. Raiser Edwards and Miss Edith Edmondson. WOMAN’S CLUB HOLDS FIRST ’41 MEETING The Woman's Club held its initial meeting of the year on Friday. Mrs. B. G. Campbell, president, presided. A nominating committee, composed of the club officers, was ap pointed to submit names of officers to be voted on for the ensuing year. Mrs. W. A. Davidson reported that more than eighty dollars had been realized from the sale of Christmas seals. Mrs. Edison Davenport read a very interesting history of Washington County and Mrs. B. G. Campbell pre sented and illustrated the uses of our flag. Mrs. R. H. Lucas, Mrs. Sam Lucas, Mrs. J. E. Swain and Mrs. A. R. Mod lin, as hostesses, served a salad course with coffee, using gum drops holding tiny U. S. Flags as favors. Mrs. J. R. Campbell and Mrs. Louis Lucas won the door prizes donated by Williford’s Grocery Store and the Roanoke Coal Co. respectively. -$ PLEANANT GROVE STEWARDS MEET Pleasant Grove.—The Pleasant Grove board of stewards held their monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. W. B. Chesson Sunday after noon. Rev. M. R. Gardner presided. Mrs. W. B. Chesson rendered prayer. Reports from the stewards was given. Mr. Gardner outlined the work for the new year, and plans were suggest ed and discussed for the upkeep of the church. The envelope system will be continued for the financial con tributions, which is a grea. help to the treasurer at the close of the year. The next meeting will be with Mrs. J. C. Swain in Plymouth. MRS. J. K. REID HOSTESS THURSDAY Mrs. J. K Reid delightfully enter tained the Thursday Afternoon Liter ary Club at her home on January 2. All members were present except Mrs. W. H. Clark, who was out of town. Mrs. S. D. Jones, guest of Mrs. B. G. Campbell was a visitor. Mrs. Z. V. Norman gave an inter esting review of "Days Before Lent" and W. R. Hampton discussed. Club members were invited into the dining room at the conclusion af the meeting where a delicious two course dinner was served, consisting of fried chicken, rice, tomato slices on let tuce. hot biscuits, coffee, molded ice cream and fruit cake. -® MRS. SATTERTHWAITE HOSTESS TO CLUB Mrs. Dan Satterthwaite was hostess to her bridge club on Wednesday eve ning at 7:30 o'clock at a chicken sa lad supper. Mrs. W. J, Jackson, Mrs. A. J. Byrd and Mrs. R. S. Ange joined the club members for the evening. Mrs. Roy L. Swain scored high for the club and received linen hand kerchiefs. Mrs. A. J. Byrd was pre sented a flower bowl as the visitor’s high award and Mrs. J. H. Newkirk won the bingo prize. A red and white motif was accen tuated. - MRS. TED BLOUNT HOSTESS MONDAY Mrs. Ted Blount delightfully en tertained at two tables of bridge last Monday evening at her apartment on Main Street. At the end of four progressions of bridge, the high score prize was pre sented to Mrs. J. R. Campbell. The hostess gave a prize to Mrs. C. O. Lewis, of Clinton, guest of Mrs. E. L. Owens. Mrs. C. L. Blount received the low award. A dessert course, with salted nuts, mints and coffee, was served. Guests included Mesdames C. L. Blount, S. V. Lewis, R. W. Johnston, J. R. Campbell, E. L. Owens, C. O. ROPER METHODIST WOMEN IN MEETING Roper.—The Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Roper Meth odist church held its January meet ing with Mrs. M. R. Gardner, at the parsonage, with 11 members attend ing. The president. Mrs. A. R. Hooker, presided, and the meeting was opened with the Lord's Prayer. After the [minutes ewre read and various re ports given, pledge cards for 1941 were signed, while Mrs. M. R. Gardner sang "I Gave My Life for Thee." An interesting program, entitled "Investing Our Heritage for Health," was presented under the leadership of Mrs. C. L. Walker, with Mrs. M. R. Gardner, Miss Alma Knowles and Mrs. C. L. Walker participating. "Min istering to Shifting Populations." taken from the book. "Uprooted Amer icans." was presented by the Rev. M. R. Gardner. The February meeting will be held with Mrs. B. B.
