BOYS' AND GIRLS' BASKETBALL
TEAMS WILL OPEN SEASON WITH
ROPER FRIDAY, JANUARY 16TH
Coaches Promise Action in
Opening Games at Local
School Gynasium
The boys’ and girls’ basketball
teams of the Plymouth High School
are today preparing for a double
feature with teams from the Roper
High School at the gymnasium here
Friday night, January 16, the first
game being scheduled to get under
way ot 7:30 o’clock.
Miss Irene Dixon, coach of the
girls, has about 30 gii-ls practicing
daily for speed and accuracy in bask
etball technique. Louise Nobles,
Gladys Bowen, Tiny Alexander, Grace
Nobles and Gertrude Woolard are
fighting for their last year positions
on the team. Several girls are left
from last year’s squad but most of
those interested are engaging in the
sport for the first time.
Several girls from Richwood, W.
Va., and other schools have arrived,
and they are going to prove valuable
to the team, according to Miss Dixon.
“Although we have not predicted a
winning team for the past few sea
sons,” says the coach, ‘‘I am greatly
encouraged with the interest being
shown by all of the girls who are
out for practice this season.”
Roy Manning, Alton and Elmo
Mayo, Feyton Magee, Edgar Bateman
Joe Weede, John Brown and several
others are looking good to Coach
Louis Trunzo who brought these
boys over from his successful football
squad. It was understood that about
12 boys were to be carried on the
squad.
Coach Trunzo will have the assist
ance in coaching the team of Fred
Bateman, former Wake Forest Col
lege athelete, law student and assist
ant coach of intramural sports at
the college. His club won the champ
ionship in basketball and were given
gold basketballs.
Games will be played with the fol
lowing schools, but the dates of the
games have not been announced as
yet: Belhaven, Edenton, Williamston,
Columbia, Hertford, Ahoskie, Wind
sor, Aulander, New Bern, Bath, Bear
Grass and Jamesville.
It was pointed out that doublehead

“Caught in the Draft” Pre
sents Bob Hope as Rookie
Who Gets His Cookie
There’s a new Hope for the Army
now that Bob has joined up. For
America’s new defense Army has its
Hollywood counterpart in “Caught in
the Draft,” Paramount’s up-to-the
minute comedy film at the Plymouth
Theatre Monday and Tuesday. The
picture burlesques the trials and
tribulations of the rookie’s life in the
Army.
The comedy corps is headed by Bob
Hope and Dorothy Lamour. Fresh
from the hilarious and romantic high
way they paved in “Road to Zanzi
bar,” the two gag-happy film pals
are joined by Lynne Overman and
Eddie Bracken, two fluke recruits
who get more than they bargained
for in trying to keep Bob out of the
guard house.
Dorothy, the colonel’s daughter,
wants her rookie to be a hero before
she says ‘‘yes” and turns the colonel
into a kernel to make her dream
come true. Hope plays the part of a
movie actor who’s in the Army as the
boomeranged result of one of his own
practical jokes. He’s the gun-shy,
goose-pimply hero who’ll floor you
with his brand-new stock of Army
gags.
Bob and his two musketeer rookie
friends, Overman and Bracken, reach
the climax of this all-out comedy film
when they take part in some war
games that rival any slapstick hair
raisers in the memory of this screen
previewer.

Dynamic Role in Sunday
Tabloid Drama

Treating the newspaper field as a
standard part of the American scene,
and its workers as average human
beings, "Unholy Partners,” the new
M-G-M picture at the Plymouth
Theatre Sunday, gives Edward G.
Robinson another brilliant opportuni
ty in a newspaper role and emerges
as absorbing entertainment.
Ably abetted by the veteran actor,
Edward Arnold, and by such up-and
coming M-G-M personalities as La
raine Day, Marsha Hunt and William
T. Orr, the picture unfolds a dramat
ic story of the conflict between a tab
loid editor and a New York racket
eer, the former played by Robinson;
the latter by Arnold.
Because Arnold is his only possible
source of finance, Robinson accepts
him as partner, confident that he
build a great newspaper and expose
the racketeering conditions of New
York in the free-and-easy twenties.
Robinson offers one of his best por
trayals as the tough tabloid editor,
Arnold is excellently cast as the rack
eteer, and Laraine Day of the “Dr.
Kildare” series, again reveals a per
suasive talent in the role of the edi
tor’s loyal secretary. Also worthy of
mention are Don Beddoe, Walter
Kingsford, Charles Dingle, Charles
Halton, Joseph Downing and Clyde
Fillmore.

taste-good, feel-good refreshment... without turning from work.
