Hopkins was hostess to the women's missionary so ciety of the Creswell Baptist church Tuesday afternoon at the March meeting, with 14 members and 2 vis itors present. Mrs. A. C. Harris, the president, conducted the Bible study, and read a letter from Mrs. Mrs. Dowdy, as .sociational superintendent, welcom ing the group to the Chowan Asso ciation and inviting every member to attend the associational meeting at Edenton Baptist church. Friday of next week. March 27. Mrs. S. B. Wilson, wife of the new pastor, was elected chairman of the stewardship committee. The Rev. Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Wilson were welcomed as new mem bers. It was announced that the Annie W. Armstrong offering program would be held at the church Friday evening. March 20. Mrs. Clyde Smithson was in charge of the program, which was partici pated in by the following members: Mrs. H. W. Norman. Mrs. J. M. Phelps. Mrs. W. L. Davenport, Mrs. Vida Davenport, and Mrs. A. L. Holmes. The hostess served a salad plate, ice-box cookies, and hot coffee. The April meeting with be held with Fled Smith. Surprise Birthday Party For Margaret Bateman Mrs. Garney Bateman honored her daughter, Margaret Bateman, at a surprise birthday party and shower combined Pi'iday evening at the home of Mrs. Ella Bateman. The guests had all arrived when the honoree came in with Genevieve and Geraldine Holbrook. The cake was lighted with candles, and gifts surrounded the cake. The guests were: The honoree. Margaret Bateman. Misses Genevieve and Geraldine Holbrook, Glenna Ange, Mary Gordon, Helen Bratten, Clarise Bateman. Carolyn Byrd, Martha De McGowan, Mercedes Wa ters, Florence Waters, Naomi Skiles, and Ruby Bowen. Miss Irene Dixon acted as hostess. Games were enjoyed and refresh ments, consisting of a salad course and lemonade, were served. Mrs. S. A. Ward Hostess To Local Literary Club Mrs. S. A. Ward. Sr., delightfully entertained the Thursday Afternoon Literary club, March 12, at her home on Main street. Mrs. J. R. Campbell read a paper on "How Famous Songs Come to Be Written,” Mrs, Campbell was assis ted by Mrs. W. H. Peele, who read the hymn "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” and by Mrs. R. W. Johnston, who played on the piano songs dis cussed in the paper. Mrs. H. A. Blount gave an interesting discussion of the life of an artist. A two-course dinner was served in the dining room. Arrangements of jonquils and narcissi decorated the table. -s, Creswell Auxiliary In Meeting Monday Creswell.—Members of the Christ Church were beautifully entertained when they met Monday afternoon at the home of Mi's. H. M. Starr for the March social meeting. The program topic for the month “The Glade Cross Mission Indian Work” was presented by Mrs. A. S. Holmes. Mrs. T. C. Holmes gave a talk on united thank offering. The hostess served country ham, congealed salad on lettuce, tomatoes, cocktail crackers, pickles, hot rolls, egg nogg pie. salted pecans, mints, spiced tea. Fpery Patriotic American Salutes His Nation's Flag During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the Flag, or when the Flag ia passing in a parade or in a review, all persons present should face the Flag, stand at attention and salute. Those present in uniform should render the right hand salute. Those men not in uniform should remove their headdress with the right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Women should salute by placing the right hand over the heart. The salute to the Flag in a moving column is rendered as the Flag approaches the spectator and is held until it has passed. Woman's Club Meeting At Creswell Thursday The Creswell Woman's Club met Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. R. T. Hopkins for its regular monthly meeting. Miss Hazel Johnston, public school music teacher,, presented a musical program using St. Patrick's Day as the theme. Billy Bennett sang a bass solo; Miss Marjorie Phelps a soprana solo and Miss Johnston and Miss <vdr> Virginia Hopkins sang "My Wild Irish Rose.” Miss Janie Mclnnis gave a reading. The business session followed the program with the president, Mrs. B. W. Gaither presiding. The quizzical members, with national defense questionaire issued by the Federal government and stressed importance of buying bonds and planting gar dens. The hostesses, Mrs. R. T. Hopkins, Miss Hilda Clontz, Miss Elizabeth Rivers and Mrs. C. N. Davenport. Jr., served sandwiches, cookies and cof fee. -c Mrs. Blount Rodman Entertains Thursday Mrs. Blount Rodman entertained her bridge club Thursday evening. Mrs. J. W. Read and Mrs. E. L. Owens were visitors. Mrs. A. Papeneau scored high and Mrs. Guy Watson was second high scorer. Mrs. P. B. Bateman won the bingo prize. Sandwiches and coffee were serv ed. -$ Mrs. C. C. Hardison Hostess Last Tuesday Mrs. C. C. Hardison was hostess to the Ace of Clubs Bridge club Tues day evening, using a St. Patrick’s motif. Mrs. R. £. Dunning won the high score and the traveling prizes. Mrs. John Williams was runner up. A desert course was served. -@ Mrs. McGowan Honors Visitor Here Monday Mrs. C. McGowan entertained informally at her home Monday evening, honoring Mrs. W. L. John son. State U. D. C. historian, of La Grange, house guest of Mrs. Myrtle Evans Herring. Guests included Mis. In the bridge game Mrs. Bernice Hammond won the high score and the bingo prizes. Mrs. Ben Sumner retained the traveling prize. Miss Ethel Perry and Mrs. W. J. Jackson received the prize for guests.
