First Bound ol North - South Turney
Ellis Maples, pro at the Plym

excellent start In the North and
South open championship tour
nament at Pinehurst Tuesday,
shooting a two-under-par 72 for
the first 18-hole round, which was
good enough for a tie for fourth
place. Lester Kennedy, of Lynn,
Mass., was leader at the end of
the first round, his 66 equaling
the course record and being one
stroke better than the tourna
ment favorite, Sam Snead and
Ben Hogan, who wound up in a
tie at 67 for second place. Six
other pros had 69's, and then
came Maples and five others at
70. The second round of 18 holes
was to be played yesterday, with
t)ie 36-hole final coming today
for the lowest 60 qualifiers.
A total of 95 players posted
scores at the end of the first

the mightiest were ’way down the
list. Clayton Heafner, Jimmy
