Attends Funeral In Portsmouth Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Peele and son, Billy and Mrs. Frank Numey went to Portsmouth Thursday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Chlode Gardiner, a former resident of Plymouth. American Legion Meets In Community Building The American Legion Auxiliary ol Plymouth met on Monday evening in the community building. Mis. John Rogers and Mrs. Bryant Jordan host esses, served refreshments. Mrs. J. B. Willoughby presided. A memorial service was held in honor of Mrs. D. A. Hurley, who died a few months ago while she was pre sident of the auxiliary. A pin which was won by Mrs. Hurley, before her death was presented to her daughter, Gwen. Mrs. Willoughby read a tribute to Mrs. Hurley, which was written by Mrs. J. P. Jordan Following a pray er each member walked up to the front and dropped tulips and spirea into a basket which had been placed on a table. This basket of flowers was presented to D. A. Hurley to place on his wife’s grave. During the business session the preamble was read and “The Star Spangled Banner" was sung. A pray er was made for the boys in service, Five members reported that they were knitting for the Red Cross. $10 was voted to help defray the expenses oi the president to the State Convention to be held in Asheville soon. The $2.50 award offered by the American Legion Auxiliary for the best essay on “Americanism” was won by Harry McLean. Leila Paul won the $1.00 award. Mrs. W. C Jones presented these awards at the commencement exercises on F'riday. The following members attended the district meeting in Washington on Thursday: Mesdames J. B. Wil loughby, J. B. Campbell Married In New Bern Friday The first Baptist Church in New Bern was the scene of a pretty wed ding Friday afternoon. April 24, at 5:30 o’clock, when Miss Geraldine Robbins of New Bern became the bride of Robert Burbage Campbell of Plymouth and New Bern in the pre sence of relatives and intimate friends. The Rev. Chas. E. Williams, Epis copal Rector of New Bern officiated. The vows were spoken before a background of wood wardia fern palms, southern smilax. baskets of white gladioli and carnations and feverfew and floor standards holding cathedral tapers. The nuptial music was rendered by Miss Elaine Child, w'ho played before the ceremony “Andante Cantabele’’ by Tsehaikowsky “Icli Liebe Dich’’ by Grieg, “The Old Refrain" by Kreisler and "The Sweetest Story Ever Told" For the processional Miss Child played “Bridal Chorus” from Lohen grin by Wagner and during the cere mony “O Perfect Love". The wed ding March" by Mendelssohn was used for the recessional. The bride, who was given in mar riage by her father, wore a costume dress of brown and tan with match ing accessories. Her hat of brown had a brown veil. She carried a bouquet of sweetheart roses and fever few. Miss Grace Robbins attended her sister as maid-of-honor. She wore dress of pastel blue with navy acces sories and a shoulder corsage of red roses. The bride groom had as his best man Dr. Judson Dowling of Birming ham, Ala., and New Bern. Mrs. Robbins, mother of the bride wore a dress of blue with matching accessories and a shoulder corsage of gardenias. Mrs. Campbell, mother of the bride groom. wore a two piece rose suit with black accessories. Her shoulde corsage was also of gardenias. Mrs. Campbell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Robbins of Wil mington. She is a graduate of the Wilmington High School, Meredith College and the Episcopal School of Nursing in Philadelphia. Mr. Campbell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Campbell of Plymouth. He attended the Plymouth High School and was graduated from Wake For est College with the class of 1937 and from the Law School of the College in 1939. He was a member of the Gamma Eta Gamma fraternity. He passed the N. C. Bar examination in 1940. Mr. Campbell was vice-presi dent of the student body at Wake Forest College in 1937 and was in cluded in “Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities” that same year. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell will make their home in New Bern weheron Mr. Campbell is legal adjuster for the insurance company. Immediately following the cere mony an informal reception was held after which the couple left for Pine hurst to spend a few days. Seniors Entertained at Party Last Thursday Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Trotman and Miss Irene Dixon entertained the Sen ior class of the Plymouth High School at a mix ’em and match ’em party at Albemarle Beach on Thursday even ing. Ben Roberson and Margaret Bate man Waters won the prize offered to the first couple to get to the beach after dressing in costume. Gladys Bowen won the prize for the most original costume. These prizes were defense stamps. Hamburgers were cooked down on the water front and were served with many other good things to eat. Later in the evening marshmallows were toasted. Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Campbell and Mrs. T. L. Brady were present. T. E.L. Class Meets With Mrs. Colon Gurkin The T. E. L. class of the Ludford Memorial Baptist Church Sunday School met on Monday night with Mrs. Colon Gurkin. Mrs. Martha Harris and Mrs. John B. Carlisle were co-hostesses. Mrs. A. J. Byrd presided and Mrs. Archie Modlin led the devotional. J. T. McNair was elected teacher to succeed Miss Irene Dixon during the summer months. Pour visits were re ported by the visiting committee. The class voted to buy a gift for Mrs. A. D. Simpson who has recently re turned home from Parkview Hospital. Strawberry short cake was served during the social hour. Woman’s Club Will Meet Tomorrow The Woman's Club will meet on Friday at 1 o’clock. Mesdames H. H. McLean T. L. Bray and J. P. Jordan will be host esses. Mrs. B. G. Dix, of High Point, on April 4 at High Point, N. C. Miss McLemore has been home eco nomics teacher in the Plymouth High School for the last several years and is well known in Plymouth. SPRUILL - NORMAN Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stark Nor man, of Plymouth, announce the en gagement of their daughter, Virginia, to Edgar L. Spruill, jr., of Roper, son of Mrs. Edgar L. Spruill and the late Mr. Spruill. The wedding will take place in the early summer. Over $1,000 In War Bonds Sold In Schools A total of $1,206.35 worth of de fense stamps were sold in the local schools during the past session under the sponsorship of the Plymouth Junior Woman's Club. Mrs. W. J. Highsmith Jr, is the re tiring president and Mrs. Linwood Brown is the incoming president. Mrs. R. B. Trotman is the club sponsor. -- Mrs. Eddie Get singer Hostess To Bridge Club Mrs. Eddie Getsinger was hostess to her bridge club on Wednesday. Mrs John Williams and guest, Miss Wil liams of Roanoke Rapids were visi tors. Mi-s. James Smith won the high score prize and Mrs. Roscoe Gaylord won the second high award and the honor prize. A dessert course was served. Entertains At Country Club Thursday Afternoon Mrs. P. M. Arps and Mrs. E. G. Arps entertained their bridge club on Thursday evening at the Plymouth Country Club. Mrs. Katie Caton of [Hampton, sister of Mrs. E. G. Arps, [ was an additional guest. High score prize was won by Mrs. D. J. Brinkley. Mrs. W. R. Hampton and Mrs. R. W. Johnston received the bingo prizes. Sandwiches and coffee were served. -<s> Zone Meet of Methodist Women at Creswell Creswell—There will be a zone meeting of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service at the old M. P. Church in Creswell, Thursday of this week. Creswell Church members will fur nish the address and spiritual music. Lunch will be served in the lunch room of the school at 1:00 o’clock.
