Sam Wood, whose recent hits in clude such outstanding and prize winning films as Goodbye Mr. Chips,” “Our Town,” “Kitty Foyle" and "The Devil and Miss Jones," di rected the production from the script by Casey Robinson, based on Henry Bellamanns novel which was one of the best-sellers of the past decade. Besides the four stars, the featur ed cast of “Kings Row” includes Charles Coburn, Claude Rains, Judith Anderson, Nancy Coleman, Kaaren Verne, Maria Ouspenskaya, Hary Davenport and many other well known character portrayers. -» Many Scenes From "Ships With Wings" Shot on Ark Royal -$ Stellar Cast Provides Thrill ing Action Picture Here Sunday John Clements, Leslie Banks, Jane Baxter, Ann Todd, Basil Syd ney and Edward Chapman head the stellar cast of “Ships With Wings,” the thrilling action picture about England’s Fleet Air Arm, which will show at the Plymouth Theatre on Sunday. The film, which was pro duced by Michael Balcon and di rected by Sergei Nolbandov, is pack ed with thrills and action and most of its bang-up drama takes place aboard the famous aircraft carrier Ark Royal. In spite of the galaxy of picture luminaries in the cast, the Ark Royal —that gaunt, lopsided, powerful beauty of the sea—emerges as the top star. Thrilling Air and Sea Action One of the most stirring spectacu lar and sensational scenes ever pho tographed for the screen shows this tremendous carrier ploughing through an inferno of bombs and flying metal, her deck ablaze from a hit by an enemy bomber and her planes spew ing forth in spite of the flames. Other smashing scenes show the aerial torpedoing of Axis ships, the low-flyink bombing of a Greek har bor, the hero pancaking his plane onto a German bomber and miracu lously flying both into a dam which bursts and decimates a German tank division poised for a counter-attack. After the bombs explode, millions of gallons of water are released, tearing away the enemy airdrome and their lines of men and mechanized equip ment. Roy Kellino, one of the screen's top cameramen, sailed in the Ark Royal on wartime service for three months, during which time he shot 100,000 feet of film used in “Ships With Wings.” These shots are pack ed with spectacular realism and au thenticity that have already thrill ed hundreds of moviegoers and given them their first real view of how an aircraft carrier operates in action. ed the revival services at Philippi. And here’s what Dotty says about pictures like “The Fleet’s In”. “Call them ‘escape’ pictures if you like; but it is not from the reality of our position and the Job that Americans must do that we are es-! caping from. We can still be aware of the tremendous effort we must all make for victory and still be able to laugh at the same time and appre ciate music.” ROPER Mrs. C. J.
